From the President

Quote from article in the LV Review Journal 'Neon' section October 5th..."Hardly anyone is using watercolor today, they've fallen out of fashion," says Dr. Libby Lumpkin, assistant professor of modern art at UNLV and assistant curator of the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. Guess who is going to get the first invitation to the Nevada Watercolor Society Fall Show being held in the Tam Alumni Center at UNLV!

Another piece of news some of you may have missed which appeared in the Oct. 5th issue of the LV Sun ... "The Las Vegas Art Museum has released curator James Mann because of what museum officials describe as artistic differences." What this means and how it will affect us remains to be seen. Dr. Mann will be leaving December 31.

Now for an update on the Nevada Watercolor Society local scene: The Jane Burnham work- shop was a huge success and all 24 people who attended are much better painters than they were because of her vast talents and personal attention to all attendees. She also gave a good demonstration at our last meeting which by count included an audience of some 100 persons. Demonstrations add a lot of interest to our meetings and we hope to have more scheduled in the months ahead.

Speaking of workshops, a huge thank you to MARY ANN CAVARRA and BILL BUSCH for all their hard work in setting up the workshops, putting them together and seeing them through. The work involved is incredible and I sometimes think we do not show enough appreciation to them.

Mary Shaw hosted a terrific champagne reception for the showing of her students' paintings on September 30. The quality of work shown in the many paintings, cards, etc. which were displayed in her home and gardens, was appreciated and purchased by many of the crowd of people who attended. We hope this becomes an annual event.

A reminder that Dottie Burton's one woman show is being held at the "Left of Center Gallery" located just off of Cheyenne on Gowan Road. As we all know, Dottie's talent is awesome and her paintings will be on display until the middle of November. You will be doing yourselves a favor by dropping by and having a look at her work.

Hope you have all entered the Flamingo County Library Show...been accepted...and that your paintings will be on view until December 17. And, don't forget to get your slides ready for the Western Fed Show...deadline is December 5.

A note to say that our monthly meetings will continue being held at the Mesquite Club for the balance of the 2001-2002 season.

Bea Ratliffe, President

November Meeting

THE BEST OF THE WEST!!!

This is your opportunity to see the best watercolors from 10 Western Watercolor Societies from the WFS show held in Salt Lake City last May. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see them in person guarantee you will enjoy these slides.

This should get you inspired for your own paintings and give you an idea of what the jurors are choosing. You will have an opportunity to be the "juror" and make your choice for the "winners". Those with the most winners that coincide with the official jurors choice will win a prize!!!

Come join in the fun and enjoy some spectacular water- colors. Let's give thanks for the talent and determination we ALL have as artists and the opportunity to share our love of art with all of us in the NVWS at these monthly meetings.

DON'T FORGET - YOUR SLIDES ARE DUE DECEMBER 5, 2001, for the next WFS exhibit being held in New Mexico.

See you in November.
Sue Fridley, WFS Representative

The rooms are located at the Best Western Zion Park Inn, 1214 Zion Park Blvd., Springdale, Utah 84767. Telephone number is (435) 772-3200 or 1-800-934-7275. News From The Show Chairman

As I am writing this the Library Exhibition at the Flamingo Library is up and very beautiful. The exhibition is in two locations at the library - the front entrance main gallery and the hallway running toward the rear of the library. If you have a chance, take a run over there during normal library hours, have a look and enjoy the art of your fellow Society members. To those of you who contributed paintings to this exhibition, a big THANK YOU!

The OPENING RECEPTION for the FALL 2001 SHOW at the TAM ALUMNI CENTER will be on MONDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 19, 2001, from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. This is the circular gallery on the second floor.

We had 104 entries. The juror, JANE BURNHAM, chose 46 to be exhibited. I offer my congratulations to those accepted and to the winners who will be announced at the reception. I hope you all plan to attend as this and the Spring show have been very well received in the past. I am sure you will find the FALL 2001 SHOW to be just as exhilarating.

As a reminder, the TAM ALUMNI CENTER is located at MARYLAND PARKWAY and HARMON AVE. The parking is limited so I suggest you come early. There is elevator service to the 2nd floor if needed. Invitations are printed and will be distributed to you for mailing to your friends, relatives, business associates, doctors, lawyers, bakers, candlestick makers and Indian chiefs! We are anticipating a large turnout this year and hopefully a few surprises too.

I wish to extend my sincere thanks to my committee members and all those of you who assist in the planning and execution of the shows. My hat's off to you all!

I heard from Bellagio and Treasure Island regarding the exhibit space. Unfortunately, they will not give us wall space, only a 6 foot display cabinet in each location suitable for 6 - 8 small paintings. I will propose a lottery to be held in December for the space available. The displays will be replaced every two months. The first is scheduled for January 2002.

At this writing, I have still not had word from COWPARADE regarding the Society's entry, however, I am still going ahead with the collection of 8" x 8" paintings (90 lb paper please) with some green in them for the cow. PLEASE bring your paintings (2 would be nice from each person - any subject except nudes) to the next meeting. Oh, Yes, SIGN YOUR PAINTINGS!

Several paintings have been sold from the Jitters' displays. I am planning on hanging two or three more stores in January and will need your support for this wonderful venue for our work.

The Society's Permanent Collection is up and hanging at the LIED LIBRARY at UNLV and can be seen during normal library hours. The location is on the 3rd floor.

See you all at the next meeting,
Dr. Steven J. Sinert
