The Vocal Siren explained...🗣
The vocal siren is a great way of warming up the voice and generally “checking in” as such, to see how your feels at that moment. The siren does not need to be loud, think of it as a small sound. The aim is to have good vocal fold closure ( this means no breathiness or extra air escaping). Always try to really slide through your vocal range. There are many varying factors which you may not be aware of that can effect our voice, like how much... sleep you have had,hydration,stress, illness etc so the siren is a great way of gauging how your voice is and prepare you for using your voice, be it a singing lesson, a speech or performance.
How to do it? Start by saying the word “SING” then hold on to the “ING” part - start at low to mid range and continue up till you have reached the top of your range, then slowly make your way back down again.
Here are two clips of Dan & Jo demonstrating the vocal siren! You will see that Jo is physically monitoring the movement in her Larynx (where the voice is produced). Did you know your larynx moves up & down? Why don’t you give it a go?
