Before she was a world-famous actress envied and desired by millions, Kate Winslet was a 5’7”, 180-pound teenager whose schoolyard nickname was “Blubber.” As she has revealed in interviews, mean girls repeatedly told Winslet that, because of her size, no one would ever find... her attractive. “Even now I do not consider myself to be some kind of great, sexy beauty. Absolutely not,” Winslet said in 2009, after winning an Academy Award. “When I was heavy, people would say to me — and it was such a backhanded compliment — they would say, ‘You’ve got such a beautiful face’,” she recalls, “in the way of, like, ‘Oh isn’t it a shame that from the neck down you’re questionable.’ ” But now as a certified star, Winslet is happy to take her looks to extremes — when it comes to movie roles, that is. “I love it when a character requires me to look less than my red-carpet best,” she shares. “It’s more fun playing a character that requires you to look like dog s–t. It’s my chance to challenge myself to the fullest, which is one of the great joys about this job.” Today she urges young women to be more complimentary to their female friends. “It’s sad that we don’t seem to come across young girls saying to their friends: ‘Wow, you’re so pretty’,” she said. “Young women these days, because they’re exposed to levels of criticism in the media, they just automatically criticize their friends, themselves and each other. It’s bizarre.”
