As part of Aberdeenshire’s shift towards greater recycling rates and sending less materials to landfill, tyres and asbestos will no longer be accepted at any of the area’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) from June 3.
The change, which also applies to four of the council’s waste transfer stations, is expected to save around £50,000 a year and have minimal impact on householders.
The money saved will be used to employ extra staff at recycling centres, who will advis...e customers how best to dispose of materials, helping to increase recycling rates and reduce disposal costs.
Tyres are not classed as household waste and the council has no legal responsibility to deal with them – anyone buying new tyres can pay for disposal of the old ones at the same time.
Although one of the lowest tonnages of any materials handled at HWRCs, tyres are one of the most expensive to dispose of. With very limited options to recycle or reuse them, they are currently sent to a cement kiln for use as fuel, at a cost to the council.
Asbestos, only currently accepted by the council at four sites under limited circumstances, is currently sent to a specialist landfill site for disposal at significant cost.
Although tyres and asbestos together only account for less than 0.5% of the waste handled by the council each year, neither method of dealing with these materials is classed as recycling.

Oldmeldrum Seasonal Garden Waste provision - Due to an event being held at Meldrum Academy on Saturday 25th May, we will not be providing the seasonal garden waste skip there that day. There is a permanent green waste skip at the nearby Inverurie Household Waste Recycling Centre for those looking for an alternative disposal site.

Changes to kerbside collection of recycling and waste in Aberdeenshire to push up recycling rates and send less to landfill will happen next year, councillors have agreed.
As part of a new overarching waste strategy for the area, Aberdeenshire Council sought £3.2million funding from Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) to help roll out a new collection system.
That was thrown into doubt when ZWS confirmed it would not provide the money required, in light of the emerging Deposit Return S...cheme and the effect this will have on recyclates collected from homes.
The council’s Infrastructure Services Committee (ISC) decided today (Thurs, May 16) to introduce alternative arrangements to push up recycling rates and reduce materials sent to landfill.
They approved an option to use households’ existing bins in a three-weekly collection cycle while officers continue to work to explore funding opportunities for further changes.
One bin and a food waste caddy will continue to be collected every week. This means:
Week 1 – General waste bins (landfill) and food waste collected
Week 2 – Recycling bin (blue lid) and food waste collected
Week 3 – Recycling bin (blue lid) and food waste collected
The materials that can be recycled on the kerbside remain the same - the only difference is that the blue-lidded recycling bin is emptied more often (twice in every three weeks).
The new service will be piloted in some areas in 2019 and rolled out to the rest of Aberdeenshire in 2020. Households will be contacted in advance by post.
As over 70% of the waste produced in Aberdeenshire is recyclable using the existing recycling services, this change should allow an increased recycling rate, while work continues to seek other ways to push that up even further using kerbside services.

More than half of the reports of flytipping last year could have been prevented had the dumper arranged for a bulky uplift collection.
The council provides a bulky uplift service to residents, causing minimal disruption as the goods are collected from the property location.
So if you have bulky items that won't fit in your bin or want to get rid of an old sofa that’s seen better days you can contact our colleagues at Wasteline to arrange this.
