TOUCHWOOD YARNCRAFT - Handspun and Hand Dyed Yarns and Fibres from Portsoy in North East Scotland.

Using handspun and luxury yarns I knit shawls and wraps incorporating traditional Shetland designs and patterns.

I run classes for others to learn to spin and relax in the beautiful countryside surrounding my home.


Having been an avid knitter for many years I eventually needed a challenge and so embarked upon lace knitting from charts. This is something that I still do and really enjoy! I love to see the shawl progress from, often, a tiny starting point to a crumpled pile of lace knitting which transforms magically into a beautiful shawl after being washed and blocked. . . . . the final stage. Yes, it's a lot of time and effort but is truly worth it. . . . . you certainly get out what you put in.

Knitting the shawls from luxury yarns, I began to think about the yarns and the different fibres they were made from, along with the processes involved to get those fibres from the animal or plants all the way to a knitted garment. As a natural progression I began to read lots and became inspired to know even more.

Then, one Christmas my husband gave me a surprise present of a spinning wheel. . . . . and I was off on another journey of more learning and researching. This led naturally to the whole picture of taking a raw fleece, washing and cleaning it, combing and carding it, dyeing and blending it, spinning it while marvelling at the colour combinations and finally knitting it to transform it completely into something luxurious or something very useful!

Along the way, I have learned lots and still have far more to learn. I've met many interesting and very knowledgeable folk and hope to meet and talk to lots more.

Now that I spin and knit every day, I have yarn to spare to hopefully inspire others to start that transformation process too. So I am now able to offer for sale these unique yarns that I have spun myself. Many of these yarns are lace weight as this seems to be how I naturally spin. I also have hand dyed and hand blended fibre for others to spin.

In addition, I love to help others to learn to spin. . . . . those who have thought they would like to give it a try but who wouldn't know where to start. I am offering spinning tuition, using my own spinning wheels, as I now have quite a collection. I am based in the rural North East of Scotland, just a couple of miles from the Moray Coast.
