Anchor Lodge will once more be throwing open its doors to the public for an open evening. The Brethren of Anchor Lodge would like to invite anyone who may wish to ask any questions about freemasonry. We wish to dispel some of the myths surrounding our order. This event will take place on the evening of Wednesday the 7th of March 2018, between the hours of 19:30 and 21:30 at the Masonic Hall.

Brother Harry Pearson Brother Harry Pearson was born in Redcar, the Son of John and Margaret Pearson, of Northallerton and was married to Amelia Pearson, of Redcar. On the 12th December 1913 at a regular lodge meeting a ballot was taken for Mr Harry Pearson, aged 27 yrs, an engineer of Queen Street, Redcar. The minutes record that he was proposed by WBro GH Lewis PM, PPGP and seconded by WBro H Fairburn PPGD (SW).The ballot was successful and Harry was declared duly elected a...nd presented himself for initiation into Anchor Lodge on the same evening. “The WM WBro Tom Place assisted by past masters performing the ceremony”
On the 22nd May 1914 an “Emergency Lodge” meeting was held, “The lodge was summoned for the purpose of initiating Mr Herbert Place. While Bro Place was restoring himself to his personal comforts, Bro Pearson was presented with his Grand Lodge Certificate. This was done at the request of Bro Pearson, knowing that in all probability he would be “going away”. Harry's last lodge attendance was at the Nov 14th regular lodge meeting.
Bro Pearson joined the Royal Navy as a Royal Naval Reserve on the 21 December 1914 and trained as an Engine Room Artificer, before serving on HMS Rupert. HMS Rupert was a battleship of the Victorian Royal Navy, whose principal weapon was designed to be her ram. He joined submarines in April 1917 and commenced training at the submarine training base HMS Dolphin in Portsmouth. On completion of his submariners training Harry was assigned to HM Submarine H10 on the 9th May 1917 patrolling the North Sea as part of the 8th flotilla based in Harwich. On the 6th January 1918, H 10 sailed to patrol an area NW of Vlieland (between 54°00'N and 04°00'E). She never returned. The official Admiralty record states:
19 January 1918 “Lost in North Sea (unknown cause) H10 sailed from Harwich to patrol in the North Sea in January 1918. She did not return and it is believed that she struck a mine”. Winston Churchill’s quote "Of all the branches of men in the Forces, there is none which shows more devotion and faces grimmer perils than the submariner”. Harry is remembered by an inscription on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Chatham Kent.
