For a couple of days last weekend, The Garage at Bartons, Chilwell, was very much like another country. It was great fun all around, as these excellent photos and videos from Marcus Oakland show.....

An unusual milestone is passing. We didn't mention it before because behind the scenes all sorts of interesting things are happening with regards the redevelopment of Bartons Chilwell site, a plan that remains on track to be so inspiring. We didn't want to chance compromising a potentially wonderful future by jumping the gun. But just so we do recognise where we are, here goes: Bartons have been in Beeston as a family and business now for 110 years, this weekend. The Goose Fa...ir was the big break in 1908, that finally established the business that Thomas Henry Barton (1866-1946) had experimented with for the 10 previous years in other locations. His idea finally succeeded here. It is 10 years too since we put on our first public event in these dilapidated but respected old buildings, and 1 year exactly that a 5th generation of the family took up the baton of running these 'events'. Coincidentally and happily, the site is open today for a Sunday Food and Craft Market, so if you'd like to join us on a special day, you'd of course be very welcome.

Showbus today at Donington Park. This event has seen the first reunion for decades in classic Barton livery of last batch identical twin DAFs from 1988. More than 3O years old now, they still look wonderful and are a pleasure to drive. Both showing Castle Donington in the blinds (probably for the first time ever), they are in the company here of Leyland Leopard 1246 and Bedford VAL 966. A great run out.

Comedy Night at Bartons tomorrow night - FRIDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER with Indian snacks on offer from Samosa Wallah.
So, if you've not been before, you're thinking............
"How on earth do they put on a comedy club in a place like this?!"
... But behind those grey double doors you'll find exposed brick walls, twinkling fairy lights and candle lit tables, at which point it all starts to make sense, albeit still a little weird. This week has real ale from Brewsters (the award winning Hophead and Hop a Doodle Doo) and Oakham Ales (Bishops Farewell and Scarlet Macaw) as well as a selection of wines and spirits. Also this time hot samosas will be available via Samosa Wallah! Doors open at 7:30pm. Tickets are still available on the website.

Barton Bros would like to say a big Thank You to traders and visitors at yesterday’s market. The market is larger again next month with some new names bringing candles, Xmas wreaths, bath bombs, hand plaited dog leads/pony harnesses, woodcraft etc. And, Elizabeth’s Patisserie will be back with her fabled Mountain cake!

Really enjoyed the market on Sunday - great selection of stalls with wonderful products, fab setting with ample parking and could even take my dog along for the fun! Will definitely be returning in future!

User

Really enjoyed mooching around the market on Sunday and picked up some great ideas for gifts. The stalls were varied and interesting and there was plenty of food available. Me and a friend scoffed on sausage rolls with chutney, roast pork rolls and delicious orange hot chocolate! Its a great venue, free parking and easy to access. Plenty of more opportunities to shop for presents with 4 more markets before Christmas too.

User

Possibly the most unusual, flexible, historical and characterful arts and event venue in the world!

All visits to this historic venue are excellent and welcoming. Their Open Days and Sunday markets are absolutely wonderful. I do recommend Bartons in every way, and always a pleasure to visit and know all who manage it and all the people who have stalls there on their 'NOT the Camden Market' Sundays. Such heritage, such historic vehicles and such atmosphere! It shows what true British engineering is all about.
