These are Tree Bees. One of about two dozen different types of Bumbles in the UK. After fielding loads of calls for them over the last few weeks the nests are now in decline. I've managed to deter most people from treating them and have even brought a few home to live in my garden.

People are often surprised to discover that wasps can/will nest in the ground. It's quite common, especially where there are old mole runs for them to take advantage of.
