About Bestwood Winding Engine House

Bestwood Country Park is a peaceful green oasis, but once it was a sprawling industrial site. At its heart was Bestwood Colliery - one of the busiest coal mines in Notts. The Winding Engine House is the last remaining part of that vanished colliery.

An interesting recent mining memorabilia acquisition is this 1912 Minimum Strike mottie. It was found whilst metal detecting near the site of the former Hucknall No. 1 Colliery (Top Pit). DH Lawrences short story, Strike Pay, is based during the 1912 dispute.
