About Bransby Horses - Rescue And Welfare

**Opening hours have temporarily changed to 10am - 3pm Wednesday to Sunday**

Founded in 1968 by Mr Peter Hunt, Bransby Horses is one of the UK’s largest equine welfare charities. Dedicated to improving the lives of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.

Bransby Horses - Rescue And Welfare Description

Always concerned about the welfare of horses, Mr Hunt rescued his first horse Sally in 1947. Sally a 4-year-old mare was being kept on a bombsite in South London. She was ‘broken in’ at 18 months and was used to pull logs from a spinney. Sally had been found tearing around a yard with a tyre round her neck after the furniture van she was kept in had overturned in a storm.

Mr Hunt rescued her by paying £14 and rented a stable for her for 2 /6 a week. When Mr Hunt moved to Bransby to start the charity Sally came with him. One of the first horses rescued by the charity was a blind grey mare called Faith. Sally and Faith became firm friends.

Over half a decade later the charity Mr Hunt set up cares for nearly 1000 horses, over 350 at their two sites in Lincolnshire, Bransby, which is open to visitors and Barlings, and over 550 in foster homes around the United Kingdom.

The charity is completely reliant on public donations. The Visitor Centre at Bransby has grown over the years, and now has an award winning cafe, gift shop and tens of acres for the public to explore and meet the horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that reside there.

Every day the teams at Bransby rescue, rehabilitate and care for equines in need. They also educate owners on how to best care for equines, offering support and advice.
The charity is one of the largest equine charities in the United Kingdom, and continues its expansion, with the support of the public, as demand for equine rescue and welfare increases.

What a wonderful place to visit. Lots of horses, ponies and donkeys to see all being well looked after. The whole place is clean and tidy with plenty of places to wash your hands after petting the horses. Smashing cafe too

We’ve all enjoyed a fabulous visit to Bransby this evening.

The staff were brilliant with our students and couldn’t do enough for us! We all had an excellent meal in the cafe followed by a tour round meeting all the lovely donkeys and horses. So looking forward to doing it again on Thursday!

Thanks again. St Francis School staff and students

We brought our children here yesterday and was very impressed with the visit. Well maintained premises, friendly and helpful staff and very reasonable priced for food/drink and gift shop. Free entry too! Thank you, we shall certainly be returning in the summer

Visited today with family (and dogs ). Thought the centre was very impressive - much exceeded our expectations. Paths seemed endless but well laid out, we wish we’d had more time!

Horses and donkeys were lovely, all of the ones we came across were very interested in the dogs and were very friendly towards them!

The girls working there / volunteers were also very friendly.

Will definitely be returning with our friends and child for a longer walk and to try the kids play area out!

Visited today for the first time and we’ll definitely be back in better weather! Massive site and lots of horses, ponies and donkeys to see. Nice little picnic and play area which I’m sure is great in summer. Nice cafe and gift shop too. Great place and free to enter! Just make a little donation to help keep the place going. You can take dogs too so next time we’ll bring ours along with our little boy!

Took my nieces 10 and 4, they both loved it, especially the 10 year old, she enjoyed reading about the individual stories of the horses and donkeys and all the horsey facts, more information would only improve the already fantastic details!

The animals are clearly well cared for, all areas clean and tidy, staff were plenty and friendly, there was a vet there doing checks on several of the animals, cafe food was nice but a little pricey.

The little park area was a bit too difficult for the 4 year old and we enjoyed a good 4 hours but then had seen everything we wanted!

Would definitely recommend this place, it's free but donations are welcomed and who wouldn't want to support this wonderful place!!!

This is the second time we have been to Bransby. It's a beautiful place. And the work they do there is fantastic. Will be visiting again soon.

This is just a lovely place. So peaceful. So beautifully cared for, as are all the animals here. The staff are brilliant and friendly. Everytime we visit we are overwhelmed by this place being such a positive experience in a world where there appears to be so much negativity. We are so grateful that sentient beings can be cared for in the way that they are at Bransby.
