Bromley House Library Description

Nottingham Subscription Library was founded in 1816 and moved in 1822 to its present home, Bromley House, which is centrally situated in the city on Angel Row. It is a dark red brick building built in 1752 as a ‘town house’ for George Smith, grandson of the founder of Smiths Bank, the oldest known provincial bank in the country.

We’re open again after our short period of closure but the repair work continues. The next step is to strip the roof - but first we need to make sure we are watertight so a temporary roof will form the final part of the scaffolding.
Last night, the team built the roof sections on the ground then lifted them up with the crane while two men on the roof guided each section into position then bolted it into place. 👇👀

The work is progressing inside and out. The scaffolding is cocooning the building and the temporary roof will soon be installed. Thanks to our architect #peterrogan for documenting the progress with these images. #bromleyhouselibrarynewchapter #bromleyhouselibrary #wheresmylibrary #newroof #hiddenlibrary #hiddengarden #nottingham #historicenglandem @ Nottingham, United Kingdom

The door may have been closed but it’s been a busy week here. Outside, the scaffolding reached the roof. The stripping out of the attics continued upstairs. Meanwhile, in the main room, the insides of the arches were revealed and show the burden they’ve been carrying. The work to repair the arches will start next week.

A reminder that we’re closed for the rest of the month to let the contractors get on with some internal structural repairs. We reopen on 1st June.
In the meantime, you can contact us through here or via enquiries@bromleyhouse.org or 0115 947 3134 - but please bear with us as we’ll be working remotely at times.
See you on the other side!

As we prepare for our closure - 13 May - 31 May for essential internal works - even the plants have been uprooted. When staff do get access this is the only space we can work in so the plants had to join us. We think it looks brilliant - maybe we could push for a permanent internal garden in the Garden Wing Corridor. There will be a lot of preparation to get the main room and counter area ready for the builders. Please bear with us, at the end if the year the results will be amazing.

Scaffolding the front of the building has begun. Now you see us, but soon you won’t...!

The scaffolding is coming on at a pace. The library is slowly being cocooned in metal and wood which is now at roof height. Over the next couple of weeks the existing roof will be encased and scaffolding will cover the front elevation on Angel Row. The library will be closed from May 13th to May 31st to allow some work on internal spaces. If you are thinking of booking for any of our talks book as soon as you can because tickets are selling out quickly.
