More good work happening in the local area. Fancy a new site? Contact them to lend a hand in one of the nicest woodlands in the area.

Right trees, right place, right reason.
We love trees but the planting should be carefully considered. Always look up and think ahead a few decades- is there enough space for a healthy, mature tree to form its best possible canopy? How close is it to other trees? How big will it grow?
... Is it the right tree for the soil type? Do you know where it was grown? This is an area we are realising is really important for successful growing and reducing the spread of pests and diseases. Local is better.
A little research will go a long way to ensuring you make the right choice.
Finally, aftercare - so important for the first few years. Water it well and/or keep the roof area weed/grass free with a mulch. If you stake it when you plant it, make sure you adjust and eventually remove the ties as the tree grows.
Then just sit back and enjoy!

On Saturday 5th January, Chiltern Rangers and our weekend volunteers went to Keep Hill Woods to complete boundary and footpath maintenance. The Chipper chomped its way through the branches that were cut from the boundary and footpath,to widen and enable more light into the wood. Then we spread the chippings along the footpath. The larger branches were made into log piles to create habitat for wildlife. We were visited by 2 little tame voles that scurried about our feet. Th...ey were happy with their new log pile hotel! Great morning had by all. Huge thanks to our volunteers for their hard work, it makes such a difference having extra hands on board to help Chiltern Rangers continue to improve and enhance the environment for the local community and wildlife. Everyone is welcome to come along and volunteer with Chiltern Rangers. Keep an eye on our events page on the web-site. http://chilternrangers.co.uk/news/events- calendar-2/

Spent a lovely morning walking in one of the best woodland /heathland/mire spots in South Bucks. There’s always stuff going on and lots to see- check out the noticeboards. The ancient pollarded trees are spellbinding and poignant as we turn into a new year. Some have seen well over 400!!!
Check it out and look out for the pigs snuffling around whilst you’re there!

Some tree safety work today to finish off the year. Lots of the damage has been caused by grey squirrels stripping bark. Rot gets in and eventually the branches snap out. The squirrels are in our cross hairs for 2019....
The arisings from our work were stacked lovingly by JT & Dan into habitat piles and deadhedges - perfect refuges for the smaller woodland inhabitants such as Wrens, Stoats and our very own Tony Speight!! 🤪
... Thanks to all who have helped us in 2018 and here’s to seeing even more people out and about on our projects in 2019.
Happy New Year🥂

Another polite reminder! We have to keep banging the drum on things like this, eventually we hope things will change.

User

A little reminder for everyone. Make 2019 the year you make a difference for the environment. Volunteering time is one way, reducing your consumption of plastic is another. Spread the word and encourage others to follow your example. Maybe you can do all three??!!!

Thank you to all our Green Thursday Volunteers who joined Chiltern Rangers yesterday at our Christmas Green Thursday session. We were in Deangarden Woods helping Matt at ACC Contracting who is working with us to install a new raised timber footpath to make access to the woods easier for the local community. Matt was extremely brilliant maneuvering the 5T 360 excavator & hole auger on such a gradiented slope. This certainly made digging holes for the fence posts a lot easier.... Apart from manual work that was happening there was planting too, at least 30 Native hedgerow species along the new fencing. A fire to keep the cold away and to warm us up at the end of this wonderful session, a cup of mulled wine and a mince pie! Thanks again to all our wonderful volunteers for your hard work and volunteering all year round!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Chiltern Rangers!
See you on the 3rd of January 2019 when we begin the volunteer sessions again!
Everyone is welcome to volunteer with Chiltern Rangers! Hop on board and help us to continue to improve and enhance the environment for wildlife and the community. Check out our website http://chilternrangers.co.uk/news/events- calendar-2/

What an awesome day with the Chiltern Rangers at their Easter Egg Hunt on Fungess Meadow nature reserve. You guys do a great job teaching children about the world we live in. Thank you so much for allowing us to see what you do & learn some of your knowledge.

User

What a fantastic job Chiltern Rangers did at the service road behind Herbert road, this is at the back of my house and i can now see well into the woods now its been cleared.

User

We experienced the Easter Egg Hunt and Marshmallow toasting today at the nature reserve behind the Rye and were absolutely blown away. All put on absolutely free including mini easter eggs, marshmallows to toast on open fires with great rangers teaching safety but also allowing the children to participate, tea and coffee and hot chocolate to help yourselves to and an array of biscuits too. Really was over and above what I expected. Thank you

User

They're great! Just like the countryside

User

Thanks for a fabulous bioblitz. The kids and I had a really amazing mini adventure camping out less than 2 miles from home and finding things we hadn’t discovered before. Looking forward to the next one

User

Thank you all for a fun packed 14 hours of the Bioblitz! We didn’t arrive till late last night, but the children have had the opportunity to track bats , catch bugs, trap wood mice , identify moths and differentiate bird song. They have come away exhausted, but with a raft of new knowledge and a couple of new friends who we look forward to meeting again.

Such great aims: to work to benefit communities and wildlife.

The Rangers are such lovely people; their welcoming, relaxed, caring nature helps groups of volunteers get lots of work done for the community and wildlife (which, in turn benefits the community again).

At the same time volunteers get: health benefits by getting some vitamin D and exercise catered to an individual's ability, education about ecosystems and local history, some new friends, satisfaction in having worked towards a good cause that will benefit many others, and some some beautiful sights (like the amazing autumn colours and bird song in summer).
