How to do a kettlebell swing:
Start with the kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of you and between your feet, which should be shoulder width apart. Bending slightly at the knees but hingeing mainly at the hips, grasp the kettlebell and pull it back between your legs to create momentum. Drive your hips forwards and straighten your back to send the kettlebell up to shoulder height. Let the bell return back between your legs and repeat the move. “Don’t make the common mistake of using the upper body too much to get the weight moving”. Please see video below for an overview of the action. If you would like any further advice then our instructors are happy to assist.

Went to the first ever live music gig here last night with Happy mondays, The bluetones and cast the production and organisation of this event was brilliant. I thought the second stage at the bar was a great idea giving local bands a chance to play they were all good. Just the a shame the bands in the main arena couldn't play longer sets there were all great looking forward to more gigs here in the future hopefully some big acts/ bands in 2017

My fiancé and I popped in to the Derby Arena to enquire about the gym membership. We were greeted by a receptionist by the name of Stacey who told us about the monthly membership fee and options available, we then completed a registration form before having a tour of the facility. Wow! We were certainly impressed with the gym, the equipment and mainly that the air con was clearly working! The changing rooms were spotless too and the on site cafe serving health food was nice to see.

If there was an offer on the membership then we would of joined there and then! £30 per month isn't bad but it's always nice to get a deal! Thank you to Stacey for the tour, very helpful and good customer service.

I like the Arena, Been to both Pantomimes there and they were great. This week I went to the Elvis Concert with Shawn Klush and was very impressed with the new layout in the Arena.. I did notice earlier in the week that someone had put a very bad review on somewhere about the Arena when they went to an event there. Saying how unorganised the whole place was. starting with the parking, no help to park unhelpful staff both inside and out and shocked at having to pay £5 to park in what few spaces there was. Well I left early as know that spaces are Ltd at the Arena getting there 45 minutes before I thought would need to, But in future would leave even earlier as the queue to get in was already quite long, BUT the staff were brilliant and helpful and obviously this person probably doesn't go to many concerts as £5 is ok, most Arena's you are lucky if parking on site is under £20. I was also impressed with all the staff inside , catering staff as well. It was a great atmosphere in the Arena during the concert . So I give it full marks and look forward to more concerts coming to Derby now. I will finish by saying I liked the arena better than the Assembly rooms better envirement and no Bossy staff making people sit down like children if they enjoyed themselves to much Well done !!!

Excellent Velodrome facility for racing and training. Friendly and helpful staff. How can you not want to get on the track and see what it feels like to spin around the wooden bowl? One of the best sporting sensations to be had o7ò

After another no show by the same instructor it was beyond epic to see my all time favourite instructor ever be covering today! The legend that is Gill! Gill represent what an instructor is all about - the awesome blanace of knowing you can have a laugh while at the same time knowing she'll push you on when your flagging! The only thorn in the side... she's not doing more classes here!

Went to the happy Mondays, cast and bluetones last night. Thought the venue was absolutely brilliant but the bar queue was ridiculous. Thousands of people at the venue and two tiny bars with two staff on each. Not enough. Missed half the gig as we were queueing at the bar. Appreciate it was the first gig there but for the sake of the next one, it needs sorting. Get some more bands in!

User

Positives:

1) Beautiful Venue inside and out.

2) Finally sorted the acoustics and seating out for shows. Can last Jimmy Carr show and the sound was off completely. And we were at the front.

3) Great Atmosphere for a venue of its size. Really feel part of the crowd when the laughing starts

Negatives:

1) Overpriced Drinks. I wouldn't of mined if they were cold, on drafted and served in a proper glass. Or at least a plastic one that doesn't break in one squeeze. But warm cans of different sizes, priced at £4.50. Plus the lack of stock on certain items is a let down.

2) Only Two exits where used to get the crowds out. One was jammed while the other was empty. No staff seemed to tell anyone that the other was open.

3) The Queue System for the bar, was just one big mess. At least some organisation and a path to follow would of saved people spilling drinks. Especially at those prices. Maybe opening another bar at the other end could be an option.

Has potential to be a great venue. Needs to sort out the bars and the exits.

User

Went to see Jimmy Carr, quite excited to see the new venue as it was my first time to the arena. Seating and views are good, however the staff didn't have a clue where they were seating people regardless of the fact they had seat maps in hand sent people in the wrong direction of seats many times. The queues at the bar were ridiculous, over priced and meant we missed the first 10mins of the 2nd half of the show. They need to provide an interval drinks ordering service, or part pour them before the show.

User

To be fair it was OK but found it difficult to get to bar as to busy and drinks was very expensive for a can calsberg and Smirnoff ice 9.00 total rip off but jimmy Carr was great

User

We went to see Jimmy Carr last night the show and seating were brilliant. Along with most of the staff really approachable and friendly.

However the bar and toilet layout was poor at best, it was a tempory bar selling over priced canned drinks, the queues were huge and didn't seem to go down very fast at all, we gave up waiting to be served in the interval and the toilet arrangement.... well you have a small space to go through to get to the toilets, so you had people queuing for both the ladies and gents in the same queue because there was not enough room for 2 queues and people exiting the toilets. It's disappointing considering there are more toilets and permanent bars in the building.

User

Though still quite shiny & new, I wasn’t blown away by the arena as an entertainment venue. It’s wide seating arrangements for last nights John Bishop show weren’t great and I’d have hated to be sat at the sides. Even John commented on it. (He was fab by the way!)

However my biggest disappointment was lack of concern for safety around the venue caused by the snow. I know the weather was extreme but we knew it was coming so why were paths & roads left untreated & very dangerous. Also a dire lack of public transport left a number of us stranded. There was no offer of help or shelter from venue staff and lots of us ended up walking to the Travel Lodge to try & get taxis.

I won’t be returning, I’d rather go to Nottingham or another if the bigger cities.

User

Prices a rip off, too long queues and the clanking of bottles whilst cleaning up after the intermission was amateurish, Jimmy Carr had to get security to tell em to pack it in 🤦🏻‍♂️

User

Needs more staff to keep the meat heads in the gym under some kind of control

User

I and my family have booked seats for the Elvis show next year. We wanted middle tier seats but were told that because I am a wheelchair user I had no other option but to sit at the back! No choice was available to me! Despite trying to ring the arena many times cannot get through. My point is this, I have been to many venues for concerts etc, but I have always had a choice as to where to sit, the same as able bodied people have, and to be told that wheelchair users can only sit at the back I feel as though I have been treated as a second class person. In this day and age surely the arena can treat us all the same, and give us the same choices?

User

Here to watch my son on the track, never been here before. No milk for my tea, 2 members of staff dealing with one person on the counter, another free but no-one helping direct where to go in this vast place. I am the ONLY member of the public here as a spectator -get your Customer Service act together velodrome!

User

Went to watch jimmy Carr last night.venue was poor.Mile long que for toilets.Mile long que for the bar awful.Wouldnt of expected anything else really if derby council have ought to do with it.Sooner they sell it the better.Get someone decent in to run the place.

User

Went to see Jimmy Carr here the drinks queue was appalling and when you did get served it was cans poured into a pint glass that look like it needed a flake. Some thoughtless bar person started throwing bottles in a bottle bank, Jimmy Carr had to get security to stop them although turned it into a joke. Then as we were leaving they only opened one exit causing a real health and safety issue. Finally getting out the car park was a nightmare definitely need some traffic management training!

User

Poor customer experience last night at Derby Arena. You need to remember that after the pantomime has gone your regular customers will be there 52 weeks a year, day in day out, keeping the building going. Cyclists, gym and group exercise customers were definitely bottom of the pile last night. Not opening your cafe whilst the panto is on (despite saying that it is open on your website!) for people who are travelling to use your facility after work is really poor. Tens of thousands of pounds was spent on the cafe kitchen so it can cater for all activities and events - yet it is not open. You have a signup telling regular customers that you are putting prices up in January. That is fine, we all want the facility to be viable but at the same time to not open your cafe when there are lots of people in the building doesn't make sense - you are missing a basic income generation opportunity. In addition the car park barrier has not been working for months. Although the Arena may not get the income from the car park the Council does - again losing a huge amount of potential income. Perhaps a visit to Virgin Active to see how they run their facilities - especially the cafe may be a good idea - serves healthy food and is open when the building is open and customers are there.

User

Not at all happy with the organisation of Derby arena. Come for Brian Cox to be told can't accept card for the £5 parking they are charging which is not advertised anywhere so turned away to get cash out. Money grabbing and disgusting service considering this place is supposed to be a positive addition to the community.

Prices a rip off, too long queues and the clanking of bottles whilst cleaning up after the intermission was amateurish, Jimmy Carr had to get security to tell em to pack it in 🤦🏻‍♂️

Needs more staff to keep the meat heads in the gym under some kind of control

I and my family have booked seats for the Elvis show next year. We wanted middle tier seats but were told that because I am a wheelchair user I had no other option but to sit at the back! No choice was available to me! Despite trying to ring the arena many times cannot get through. My point is this, I have been to many venues for concerts etc, but I have always had a choice as to where to sit, the same as able bodied people have, and to be told that wheelchair users can only sit at the back I feel as though I have been treated as a second class person. In this day and age surely the arena can treat us all the same, and give us the same choices?

Here to watch my son on the track, never been here before. No milk for my tea, 2 members of staff dealing with one person on the counter, another free but no-one helping direct where to go in this vast place. I am the ONLY member of the public here as a spectator -get your Customer Service act together velodrome!

Not at all happy with the organisation of Derby arena. Come for Brian Cox to be told can't accept card for the £5 parking they are charging which is not advertised anywhere so turned away to get cash out. Money grabbing and disgusting service considering this place is supposed to be a positive addition to the community.
