Derby Museums Description

Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby.
We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire.

Today is international Left-Handers Day!
To celebrate we wanted to point your attention to Leonardo da Vinci, one of the most well-known left-handed artists of the Renaissance.
Leonardo’s left-handedness can be seen in some of his drawings through the intricate details and directions in his mark-making. Research suggests he may have became left-handed due to an injury in early life which meant he had to adapt his drawing technique.
... In February 2019, to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, 12 of the master's greatest drawings from the Royal Collection will go on display at Derby Museum and Art Gallery as part of the UK-wide exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing.

Help raise money for Derby Museums by joining us for this unique talk about Agatha Christie. Gale Goddard, the lender for the Agatha Christie collection on display at Pickford’s House, will be presenting a lively talk about the life and work of the famous writer. Could Pickford’s House be the place for murder, or is mystery and suspense found only in Christie’s crime novels?
Gale is giving this amazing talk in support of Derby Museums’ Endowment campaign, therefore a suggested donation of £6 would be gratefully received. Every donation received will be doubled by the Heritage Lottery Fund and will help us secure Derby Museums for generations to come. Every pound really does count.
You can make a donation when you book your place through Eventbrite, or wait until the day to make a donations.

We've lived in Derby over a year now, and my daughter (4) still gets a kick out of visiting the museum and exploring it. There are great interactive events, as well as the regular stuff, and she's gotten really interested in learning about the things she discovers there. She's gotten introduced to dinosaurs, beetles, cam toys, and daleks!

Visited yesterday with my grandchildren specifically to visit the exhibition of childhood TV entertainment through the years. A very interesting and enlightening exhibition for all the family. Revisited today to see the remainder of the museum which has many interesting exhibits which include an Egyptian section and archeological display which contains a number of artifacts from The Little Chester area of Derby. All in all well worth a visit

Visited today with my almost 11month old son and had a fantastic time. The staff are so friendly and helpful and made us feel really welcome, I wasn’t sure if he would enjoy if much as he’s still so young and isn’t really moving about on his own yet but he was smiling and taking it all in! I’m hoping in a few months time to start maybe bringing him to the sessions you run for tots on Fridays as I think he’d really enjoy it! We also enjoyed food from the cafe! Can’t wait to come back in the future when he’s toddling about thanks to all of you!

User

Visited the museum yesterday with my son and some friends and there children , we were in the activity room doing arts and crafts and the children enjoyed it very much . Afterwards we had a little wonder around the museum and it was lovely to see that it really hasn't changed alot since I was a little girl ... we had a lovely morning :-)

User

Visited for the first time yesterday. What a find!! So much bigger than we'd expected and tons to see. It's all free and there's a nice coffee shop downstairs. We'll definitely go back!

User

The first impression is the lovely friendly greeting and information given by the man at the door. Entrance was free a nice surprise these days. We only had time to visit the art gallery and it was well worth it. There are some beautiful paintings including a Lowry. We had a nice coffee in the cafe and once again the staff were very friendly. Worth a visit.

User

The Art Gallery was the main purpose for our visit as it houses the largest collection of Joseph Wright paintings, fitting as Wright was known as Wright of Derby. The pictures are worth the visit alone for me but there are two further gallery rooms which host temporary exhibitions. At the time of writing one exhibition was of surrealist painter Marion Adnams, also hailing from Derby. We spent most of our time in the gallery but the museum also exhibits archaeological found locally, as well as a large exhibition of taxidermy victims.

The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The cafeteria serves an excellent coffee and the nearest car park is cited as being the safest parking in Europe. All in all a very pleasant experience, we shall visit again.

User

One of the great provincial museums. The Art Gallery however is world class.

User

It's lovely museum. We found some roman pottery locally and the museum are now adding these to their finds database. Oh, and don't forget the delicious lemon meringue from the cafe.

User

I'm biased as I'm a native of Derby and now living away appreciate the wonderful resource the museum is.

User

I just love this place. There is such a lovely cosiness about it. I enjoyed my time there with my nieces at the automata workshop, then the drawing one for adults. I will definitely go back again for other activities.

User

Highly recommended and thanks to all the staff especially the gentleman who helped me with my baby's bag . The gentleman by the insect section on Sunday the 20th of August. You are a star.

Great little museum and gallery. Having been bowled over by Joseph Wright's "The Forge" at Tate Britain, I went to Derby specifically to see the Joseph Wright pictures. I was not disappointed. The rest of the museum was really interesting too - with lots of local interest for Derbyshire. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

User

Fabulous visit! The staff are the loveliest ever! Really friendly and helpful! Fantastic time... will be going back to take in more of the gallery!

Derby Museum is great, I spend a lot of time there. the staff are amazing and helpful and always glad to answer any questions you might have. toilets are clean and spotless and always smell nice too, where do they get that air freshener? Kids will love the tour guide jenny, she is hilarious and makes everyone laugh, but very educational. well worth the trip and you will come out knowing more about history than when you went in, I highly recommend it.
