Dovecote Electrical

I am a registered waste carrier, and have a commercial waste disposal contract so I can legally remove any waste from jobs I do and dispose of it properly. Sometimes I need a bit of a hand getting it all to fit in the bin, though, and that's where Dad's Little Helper comes in! He gets 20p per fitting. :) We had to improvise a bit on PPE, that's why he's sporting the swimming goggles and gardening gloves. 😎

Whether it's installing top of the range equipment or a simple pendant set, I take pride in my work.

Electrical theory, from 1977. I still come across lots of these old Wylex fuse boards... the technology's moved on a bit, but the main principles are the same. :)

- "Hello, Nottingham depot..." - "Hi, I'm expecting a parcel, but the on-line tracker says the delivery driver can't find my address. I'm a bit surprised by that..." - (audible sigh) "Well, it doesn't surprise me, sir. Doesn't surprise me at all. Alright: is it a new-build property, by any chance?" - "Not really, it's about 110 years old." - "Ha! Right-oh. I'll give him a ring, I'll tell him to try harder. Sorry about that, sir..."
... Parcelforce: not the most determined delivery drivers. But at least you get to talk to a human being when things go a bit wrong. :)

Ah, school holidays! 😎 Dad's Little Helper is assisting with board prep for an upcoming job (while I wait for deliveries)... this 5 way board will serve sockets and lights in a garage, a hot tub and lights in an adjacent room, and a shed. I'll pay him JIB rates once he's done his apprenticeship; for now, he gets 50p! :)

I did some electrical work at the home of Christopher, the chap who does the "I Am Beeston" profiles for The Beestonian. He persuaded me to have my photo taken, and we chatted about Beeston and how I came to live here. :)

"Shock risk" is usually the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about electrical safety. But incorrectly installed and/or faulty electrical equipment can be a serious fire risk. Spotlights, incorrectly covered by insulation, is a common cause; poor quality terminations in fuse boards and consumer units is another. If you smell something funny - bizarrely, the melting plastic used in electrical accessories often smells like fish! - then don't ignore it, sort it out.

One of my clients today had a brass table lamp wired in to this criminal excuse for a homemade extension lead, made by an "electrician" 30 or 40 years ago. Thin bell wire. No earth. No shrouds on the L and N pins of the plug. No RCD protection for the circuit, either. When the top of the lamp came loose as my client tried to turn it off, there was "a flash and a loud bang." She's very lucky to still be alive. Still, all sorted now. :)

I was hoping to install a 6ft LED batten in the next couple of days, but this one might have to go back... 🤔

Couple of board changes this week: a customer-specified 13-way split RCD board made by BG; the other a 7-way RCBO Hager board in a small hallway cupboard. Hager boards are great quality, and each circuit having its own RCD minimises inconvenience in the event of an earth fault... but space is a bit tight! All circuits professionally labelled, both externally (for the clients) and internally (for future electricians). :)

Well done, Mr Plumber, well done! :) Managed to hit the cable twice... directly above the double socket. The square hole in the plaster is for the back box in which I made the repair.

Steve renewed an old fuse board and sorted out several wiring issues for us in an old house. He was a real find as we had been looking for a local electrician and spotted his advert in a local magazine. He proved to be friendly, highly competent and completely reliable, keeping us informed promptly throughout the job which took some time.He is clearly a professional tradesman and and his charges are very reasonable. We will certainly be using him again if necessary and would recommend him without hesitation.

Steve quickly diagnosed problems and fixed/upgraded various items in my former business (an old, confusingly wired pub). He provides clear and concise estimates and post-job documentation. I would highly recommend him (and often do) both for businesses and for domestic work.

Steve did a great job at installing a new light fitting for me. He was efficient and had excellent attention to detail!

Steve conducted a full electrical survey on my house, workshop and garden lighting circuits followed by fixing some problems that dated back to the original wiring when the house was built. He has the real advantage that with his physics lecturing background he actually understands the full 'why' behind the regulations. Very competent, efficient and professional, I would not hesitate to recommend him to others and will use him again for all future electrical work. His rates are very reasonable so I had no issue trusting him with my wallet as well as my electrical safety!

Steve came to change light fittings in a couple of rooms and find and fix a fault with some other lights. Having struggled to find someone to do what were fairly small jobs I was delighted to find Steve who was professional, efficient and friendly and his rates are excellent. He even offered to get the kitchen lights for me (for which I paid trade rates) and advised me on issues concerning my fuse boxes which don’t currently meet regulations and I’ve booked him to install a new consumer unit. And he remained patient when I remembered extra things I wanted him to check! I would highly recommend Steve at Dovecote Electrical �

Steve came in to do a small electrical job but discovered that the cowboys who fitted my consumer unit had failed to bond/earth it to the gas and water pipes, leading to a potentially dangerous situation. After diagnosing it, he did a very neat job (think there is a photo on Facebook somewhere), sorting out this problem. He is also very good at explaining what he is doing - he left me a diagram that will now allow me to change the light fittings myself (the original job he came in to do).
