About Ducklings

Nottinghams Children’s Hospital School - we enhance the future well-being of children & young people unable to attend school due to ill health.

Ducklings Description

Ducklings is the Charity of the Nottingham Children’s’ Hospital School.

the Nottingham Children’s Hospital School are based at Nottingham's Queen’s Medical Centre, part of the Home and Hospital Education Learning Centre (HHELC), and are an Outstanding School (OFSTED March 2010 and January 2013).

Our purpose is to enhance the future well-being of children and young people unable to attend school due to ill health.

We do this by providing the highest quality education whilst overcoming barriers to learning posed by ill health.

We are committed to achieving and maintaining the highest standard of excellence in all we do and are ambitious for outcomes for our students, whilst always being guided by sensitivity.

First and foremost, we consistently strive to make the experience of every child or young person in our care a model of quality through careful planning, appropriate teaching and feedback, support and effective communication with health professionals and schools.

Every day we aim to improve a child’s knowledge and understanding, their resilience and ambition, helping each pupil to reach their full potential whilst overcoming barriers to learning.

We know that it is essential to maintain a compassionate awareness of the anxiety experienced by families with ill and injured children, and an understanding of the impact it can have on the emotions and behaviour of the children and families in our care.

Our Registered Charity Number is: 1170283

Another short video from our Summer Party... sorry about the poor camera/phone work! this one is of Top Gear's Stig (by gum! it must have been hot for him in all that racing gear) playing a game of Boccia! a ball game similar to bowls that was played at the Paralympics.

A fantastic sunny 'Music Festival' event this year, with a wonderful atmosphere, raising money for Ducklings. We had so much lovely support from staff, friends of the charity and some special guests in the form of....
- The Stig, from TopGear - The always fantastic Spiderman ( That Spidey-Tastic Superhero) - The world class Dubstep DJ Seven (Seven)... - Music, magic and balloons from Steve McGill (https://www.facebook.com/stevemcgillmusi c) - Phoebe on guitar and vocals - OPUS Music (http://opusmusic.org) - The Lord Mayor Liaqat ali (https://www.facebook.com/Liaqat-ali-1874 69277940614/) - The Sheriff of Nottingham - Councillor Catharine Arnold - Lilian Greenwood the MP (Lilian Greenwood MP)
Also loads of thanks to Gary for letting us borrow all the expensive (and heavy!) PA equipment, he delivered it at 7am in the morning and set it all up on his way to help set up the Splendour Festival. Also Mark for all the support work... setting up gazebos, moving PA equipment, face painting. There are lots of others too many to mention without which this event could not have happened.
If you missed out, do come along to next years roof garden party!

...and the 2nd 'request post'
Our summer event this year has got a 'music festival' theme. We're going to have some live music and we wondered if anyone out there might be able to help.
The date is the Thursday 19th July, from 12-2pm, and ideally we're after local bands/solo artists who could do a 20min set for us.
... During the party we'll have visits from the Lord Mayor, Robin Hood, That Spidey-Tastic Superhero and hopefully Notts TV... so if you know anyone who's at a loose end, would like to help out a local kids charity and also wants to spend a fun afternoon helping to make our party extra special we'd love to hear from you.
Please share to anyone you know who might be interested in helping... thanks so much everyone!

1st of a couple of 'request posts'... yes we're on the scrounge!
On the Thursday 19th July we're having our annual roof party for the kids, and to raise some money as well. We've got the DJ Edward Seven visiting us again and he's requested a specific piece of equipment... so....
Does anyone know where we can borrow/hire a Pioneer 900 Mixer and PA system from?
... Please share to anyone you think might be able to help. We'd need to use it for a couple of hours.
Thanks so much in advance!

Many thanks to the lovely people at the Cash Shop in Bulwell who have been supporting Ducklings by having a chalice in their store. We've just picked it up and the total raised was over £50! just brilliant.
If you could help raise money by having a chalice at your workplace then please get in touch and we'll send one over.

Hi, we're posting this time on behalf of another charity we know who are after a little help.
The Daniel Barnett Arts Foundation organises for the kids at our school to work with their very talented Artists, who come into school free of charge. They are amazing :)
At the moment they are desperately in need of good quality wedding/prom/Mother of the Bride outfits to use in a Fashion Show... and we're hoping some of your might be able to help them out... even if it's just to s...hare this post so it reaches more people who might be able to help.
You can get in touch with Diane Barnett on the phone:

Thanks to all the recent generous donations from our supporters. We have just taken delivery of a new Multi-Sensory Voyager trolley (from Rhino UK) to use with our pupils in hospital.
Mohammed was one of the first to use the trolley and was able to experiment with lights and mixing colours. Kate increased the rate of the 'Hurricane Tube' and Mohammed heard music and watched clouds generated from the projector... it really is a fab bit of kit!
Mohammed has really enjoyed all t...he visual and audio sensory experiences that the Voyager Troller has to offer. Even after his first go Mohammed showed more of his true self and felt a bit better.
The Voyager is going to be a fantastic tool when teaching students with a wide range of abilities. Thanks to everyone who helped contribute towards this new facility... we would never have been able to purchase anything like this without you.

What can we say?! the wonderful dancers and singers at the Katie Wright School of Dance have raised nearly £1000 for us over the Christmas period at Debenhams Nottingham (Debenhams - the official page). Over the past year we have been continually humbled by the generosity of the people of Nottingham, both individuals and organisations. We have now found ourselves in a position where we can provide experiences for the Children at our hospital school, we can buy equipment we could never have afforded before (we'll post something about this soon... we have just bought the most amazing sensory table)... and can help out like we have never been able in the past... it's been incredible... thank you all so so much 😊

We welcomed our friends from the Nottingham Playhouse to perform 'Town Mouse and Country Mouse' at the hospital recently.
Many thanks to all of you who have been raising money for Ducklings so we can pay for events like this... the play was a fantastic opportunity to get children and their families off the wards, to immerse themeselves in a fun and imaginative production.

Sometimes our students struggle to stick to the diet required by their medical condition. Thanks to money raised we can fund beautiful pink lunch bags like this one! These encourage students to take a healthy lunch to school.
We had a lesson teaching our students about which items would make up a healthy lunch bag. By the end of it, they couldn’t wait to show off their lunch bags to teachers and friends at school!

This morning we were at Nottingham Forest for the launch of Hoodwinked 2018 an exciting new Wild in Art public art event coming to the streets of Nottingham in summer 2018. While we were there (well Richard was, one of our Trustees), we met the legend John McGovern famous for captaining the Nottingham Forest side that won the European Cup twice under the management of Brian Clough (as well as being Scottish former association football midfielder and manager).
John was really... kind and agreed to sign a shirt for us, so after a quick trip to the shop he signed a Forest home shirt and also 2 postcards... he even had his own Sharpie!
We're going to get the shirt and postcards framed and then either sell or auction them off with all proceeds (apart from the cost of the shirt which we got cheaper thanks to John's club discount!) going to the Ducklings... what a fab morning!!
