Over the past couple of years, gut health has really caught my attention in the clinic. I really do believe we are what we eat and absorb.

3 SHORT IDEAS FOR WINTER
1. Are you feeling tired as we hit the winter? If so, maybe you need more fresh air as we move into hibernation mode. I know for sure, if I don't make a conscious effort, I can feel deficient in nature this time of year.
2. In Chinese medicine, the winter season is the most the Yin time of year reflecting cold and inward energy. Therefore, maybe it's time for some self-reflection through meditation, yoga, tai chi or Qigong etc.?
... 3. There are many foods beneficial for us during the winter. Hearty soups, whole grains and roasted nuts are great on cold days. Also, cooking your food for longer will be extra nourishing for the body in the form of stews, casseroles or bone broths.

OOMPH-UP YOUR YIN BEFORE XMAS
Oomph-up, your Yin with these simple game-changing tips before Christmas to help give you some extra energy.
Firstly, I recommend looking after your Yin energy massively during the winter, particularly if you want to feel energised this time of year.
... In the clinic, I regularly see patients with a host of Yin deficiency signs and symptoms such as mental and physical restlessness at night, night sweats, a dry throat and mouth at night or lower backache towards the end of the day to name but a few.
And guess what? The root cause of a Yin deficiency can often derive from overdoing it. So, I usually recommend resting lots and eating well.
Choose Yin tonic foods such as apple, asparagus, avocado, pomegranate, royal jelly, spinach, sweet potato, tofu and tomatoes, and generally avoid overdoing it.
Lastly, just in time for Christmas, you may, also, try boosting your Yin with some proper traditional acupuncture treatment so that you feel relaxed and energised for the festive season and beyond...

5 SEASONAL IDEAS
1. Try to live in harmony with nature and the energy of the seasons. When we neglect the laws of nature, it can, believe it or not, make you feel unwell. The powerful Yin energy of autumn and winter are appropriate times for resting. Aim to rest up regularly so that your energy (Qi) is fully charged.
2. Choose seasonal recipes such as warming stews, casseroles or congees as a fantastic way to warm you up on a blustery, cold day. Avoid chilled drinks or foods ...such as salad, or anything directly from the fridge, as this may weaken your digestion in Chinese medicine. Also, definitely say no thanks to ice in your drinks!
3. Why not...try something entirely different for nourishing your Shen (your unique essence), especially as the nights draw in. Take up a new class, read a different book or try some nourishing exercises such as tai chi, meditation or yoga to coincide with the Yin time of year. Whatever you choose, make sure it allows your unique Shen (spirit) to shine!
4. Our live's are fast-paced so a good night's sleep will help you to recharge your energy. Try a winding down ritual by switching off all technology an hour before you go to bed. Instead, start to relax by having a warm bath, read a positive, but relaxing book, or just chat with a loved one.
5. Clever layering is vital during the colder months to protect yourself from the elements, mainly the Cold and Damp or possibly who knows the snow?. I also advise patients this time of year keep their feet, hands and especially their lower backs warm, to prevent back problems, illness or other signs and symptoms from developing.
Hope this has given you some food for thought.
Have fun!

MENOPAUSE
Most people don't realise that traditional acupuncture can be beneficial for the menopause.
Women come in with all sorts of symptoms. I will go through an in-depth diagnosis talking about a patient's emotional well-being, sleep, appetite, bowel movement,, diet, exercise and menstrual cycle. We also discuss their medical and family health history. And so much more.
... I'm a particular fan of treating menopausal women because Chinese medicine is non-medicated and can help with your overall energy levels and wellbeing during this stage of a woman's life. Not to forget complementing any western medication also.
So, if you are struggling with any menopausal symptoms, maybe traditional acupuncture is worth trying?
Here's to a beautiful day, everyone!

WHY MY VERY GREEN SPIRULINA SMOOTHIE IS SO GOOD FOR YOU
As a traditional acupuncturist, I regularly offer snippets of Chinese nutritional therapy advice to enhance a patient's acupuncture treatment.
Among the tips I give, my green spirulina smoothie has to be a firm favourite. What is known as Blood nourishing food in Chinese medicine - spirulina is an excellent Blood tonic for women - especially before during or after the menstrual cycle.
... It's also great for men and women to help boost overall energy levels.
Unfortunately, the colour or taste isn't great on its own so adding other ingredients is essential to help give it a subtle flavour.
Important notable: Try to avoid drinking the smoothie no more than three times a week. Also, if you are taking any blood-thinning or prescribed medication, please discuss with your doctor before making the recipe.
INGREDIENTS
-1 tablespoon of Naturya blends organic greens -1 handful of organic ripe blueberries -1/2 teaspoon ndalororganic vanilla powder or vanilla bean paste - 1 long glass of organic rice or goats' milk
METHOD
Blend all of the ingredients until milky and pour into a long, elegant glass.
Enjoy!
Happy smoothie making everyone!
