About First Steps Ed

First Steps ED is the East Midlands' eating disorder charity. Based in Derby, we support people affected by disorders and have services at universities.

First Steps Ed Description

After suffering from an eating disorder herself, Cathy saw a real need for support in Derby city. So in 2004 she set up the first support group, open to anyone who was affected. Over the following three years many people came to seek help and Cathy decided to register First Steps as a charity and seek funding to meet more needs of those attending.

In 2007 First Steps became a registered charity and secured it's first lot of funding. Since then the charity has grown, and is now able to offer a range of services including one to ones, counselling, befriending, creative therapies, and of course, the groups, which continue to be a fundamental part of what we do. First Steps now also covers Derbyshire county and has services at both Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.

Many of the staff and volunteers have had personal experience of an eating disorder either as a sufferer or as a loved one of a friend or family member. They want to share their experience to help others, giving hope that things can get better, just as Cathy did.

First Steps offers a friendly and non-judgmental atmosphere for anyone who is having difficulties with food related issues; you don’t have to be diagnosed with a particular eating disorder. If you come along to our sessions you will soon realise that there are other people feeling the same way.

Seeking help from first steps has given me the confidence to move forward towards recovery and it has filled me with ideas of what to do with my ED and how to cope with the recovery process.

I go to the Thursday evening support group and we cover a different topic each week - I have had a few "light bulb" moments where things have just clicked and I have realised I am not alone in this ED fight.

I am grateful to have found First Steps and will continue to be a part of the Thursday evening group for as long as I can, I have met the most supportive non judgmental people that I could ever wish to meet.

It is somewhere I can be honest about my struggles and be open about what is going on in my life.

I have a "befriender" who keeps in contact via email twice a week and again it allows me to see there is life after an ED - we can talk about anything that is worrying me in confidence and without judgement.

If you are struggling or your family is struggling contact this amazing supportive charity, you won't be sorry you reached out for some support.

First Steps helped me right from that first terrifying moment of choosing to get help and I know I can continue to get support for as long as I need it. I met so many wonderful and inspiring people, made amazing friends which I never thought I could, and received support beyond any I could have imagined. This really is such a welcoming place where you will be safe and supported throughout your whole recovery.

Fantastic organisation. At a time when I didn't know where else to turn for help with my daughters eating, First Steps offered their services. In 8 weeks my little girl has made fantastic progress and is now looking positively towards food for the first time in her life. Thank you could never be enough

Amazing

Absolutely wonderful organisation- helped me from right at the start of my recovery when I was absolutely terrified and unsure to now, when I'm a lot better but would still like that support network in place! It gave me confidence- the ability to see myself as more than my ED and as a good leader, someone who could even facilitate the YP group occasionally! Made amazing friends, discoveries about myself and found an organisation more willing to help and more caring than I could have ever imagined! Try not to feel scared going here- it will help you so much!
