About Friends Of Colwick Woods

A volunteer group working with Nottingham City Council to maintain, protect and enhance Colwick Woods Nature Reserve.

Friends Of Colwick Woods Description

Friends of Colwick Woods volunteer group was formed by local residents in April 2004, and we work closely with Nottingham City Council.

The aim of the group is to protect, enhance and promote Colwick Woods as an important local resource for the benefit of the community and its natural habitat. We have "hands on" days in the woods by way of litter-picks, bulb planting and woodland projects.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO VISIT THE WOODS
We have received reports of mosquito bites while visiting the woods.
We recommend you use mosquito repellent and mosquito proof clothing and avoid going into tall vegetation at dawn and dusk when mosquitos are most active.
... It's been a challenge for our team and our work parties in the woods . Some people are genetically more susceptible to being bitten. Others don't react badly for years and then something triggers them to react more.
There are lots of mosquitos around generally at the moment because of the heat, rain and humidity together. It's something we can expect more of with global warming.
Also, the cold early spring may have reduced species that feed on mosquitos like bats, house martins, swifts, frogs and dragon flies.

Friends of Colwick Woods are holding their annual gala day, this coming Sunday at the Nature Reserve, Greenwood Road, Bakersfield - 12-4pm. There will be a PDSA community vet nurse giving demonstrations at 12.15 and 13.15 in the dog show ring. She will be covering heatstroke, choking and resuscitation, and if time, wounds and seizures. After that she will be giving health and feeding advice, cutting nails and cleaning ears for a donation to the PDSA. The dog show will be taking entries from 1pm and classes will start at 2pm. There is a wonderful children's entertainer, birds of prey, which you can have your picture taken holding and lots of other things for all the family to enjoy. Hope to see you there.

A blue budgie called Ed escaped from Carlton Hill yesterday and flew off in the direction of Colwick Woods. His cage mate is missing him . Could all Colwick Woods users please look out for him and if you get a sighting ring Val on 07510 295309 and also let us know here. Here's hoping. Richard Brown. Friends of Colwick Woods.
