GRACIE JIU-JITSU (Brazilian origins and history)

Gracie Jiu-jitsu is a style that has evolved from traditional Judo when the highly respected and undefeated Judoka Mitsuyo Maeda travelled to Brazil to spread Japanese martial arts. One of his students Carlos Gracie along with his family refined and adapted what they were taught into what we know today as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

The first Gracie Jiu-jitsu Academy opened in 1925 in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Helio Gracie, the younger brother of Carlos was unable to practice due to his frailty and as such spent his time observing the lessons taught by his older brothers. After years of careful observation Helio realised that although he knew the techniques he could not successfully apply them on a larger, stronger opponent as many of the Japanese techniques required.

This led to him to begin evolving and modifying the techniques so that leverage, timing and natural body movements instead of strength, speed and coordination was the key to greater success in combat. Helio then spent many years perfecting and improving his refinements by challenging larger, stronger and more athletic opponents from all fighting styles from around the world.

The Gracies in the 1980s created the Ultimate Fighting Championship to prove to the world how practical the system really is. Now they dedicate every day of their lives to teaching and helping others learn the art in it's purest form and wish to make it available to everyone around the world.

Edward Atkin : Head Instructor

Edward first started training in Martial Arts at the age of seven when he joined his local Judo club with his brothers. After college he travelled to Northern China in 2003 with his brother Richard Atkin to train in their various styles of fighting including Shaolin Kung Fu, San Shou kick boxing.

Upon his return he continued training at Grimsby Judo club and achieved his Shodan (1st dan black belt) in 2011 under the coaching of Terry Alltoft.

Edward began his study of Gracie Jiu-jitsu under Ryron Gracie in 2010 and received his purple belt in 2015.

Edward is now training under Darren and Helen Currie of Combat Base UK and represents their team also under the guidance of 2nd degree black belt Ryan Hunter.

Whether it’s competing or someone who’s just looking for confidence to successfully defend themselves on the street, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has it all. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Edward is a way of life and has helped him in countless ways and he hopes to help others learn this amazing Art and reap the benefits that it has to offer.

Everyone has a reason or goal in mind when joining a club or starting something new. We cover self defence and sport aspects of Jiu-Jitsu and can either sharpen your skills for competition and /or increase confidence for the real world. Below is a description of what to expect in the different types of lesson. F

Fundamental course:

The fundamental classes will involve starting from the very beginning of self defence working on balance and awareness along with must know grappling techniques standing and on the ground.

You'll grasp the concept of distance management both on the feet and ground in a fight against a potentially larger stronger opponent. Survival is your first objective and that involves maintaining energy to defend yourself from incoming strikes or other possible attacks.

No-Gi:

In this class you'll learn to off balance, control and submit someone standing and on the ground. There's no uniform so its fast paced and slippery when sweaty. Makes a nice change in training from the Gi.

Try not to get caught up in favouring one style of training over another early on in your ranks. Train both Gi and No-Gi and become proficient in both eventually you'll have a preference to one over the other. Both will improve your overall understanding of the human body and how it moves when force is applied. What makes No-Gi jiu-jitsu differ from wrestling is the mindset you use to achieve a certain desired outcome.

Advanced Class (Gi)

In these classes a more deeper understanding is needed to get full benefit from the lesson as more intricate techniques are used often and with less reference to why its being done that way as more than likely the understanding will come from the fundamental classes.

Rolling:

Sparring referred to as "rolling" in Bjj terms is the act of trying to survive, control and submit your partner without causing damage to them as they can tap out anytime they wish acknowledging you that they have been bested in that round. You aren't fighting your partners to the death as if you injure them you wont have anyone to train with and no one will want to train with you. rolling can been varying degrees of intensity from light to harder if wanting to let of some steam, just speak to your partner first so they know how you want to roll.

Fight Simulation:

In this class one person will have boxing gloves on and act like someone more untrained trying to strike you while you use your distance management stay safe and control them. Energy efficiency is vital in a fight!

Focus on the training and the improvement in the ranks will come. Don't chase for belts strive for physical and metal perfection of techniques.

Nice surprise today receiving my brown belt from Darren and Helen at combat base hq. Grimsby has been a part of combat base for 2 years now and I've always felt welcome and enjoyed the vibe and training. I've known Ryan Hunter for 10 years through judo and he's always been someone to follow in his relentless training routine. Thanks to all the coaches, teammates and my brother that push me day in day out to improve and thanks to everyone at Combat Base Grimsby and Gorilla fight team for putting up with my bizarre ways of teaching. Much love and respect. Onward and upward.
