About Holly Bush Inn Makeney

Welcome to our traditional 17th century pub with a fine selection of real ales, home cooked lunches, legendary Pork pies and a warm Derbyshire welcome.

Holly Bush Inn Makeney Description

A visitors description;

The Holly Bush is an absolute gem. It is one of the increasingly rare breed of unspoilt traditional pubs and LONG may it stay that way. It has charm and character and atmosphere that so many pubs USED to have before the breweries and pub chains started to employ completely inept and clueless “interior designers” to produce a “corporate image. ”

Not so the Holly Bush …
. . .
With its quirky layout, roaring log fires on cold days, a great ambiance and an excellent selection of real ales, it is easy to see why the Holly Bush, although it is a bit off the beaten track, has a high BITE rating and is a regular in the GBG. Abbott, London Pride and Landlord and a cider are usually available on the hand pumps plus Pedigree from the jug. Add to these a selection of well kept guest beers and the popularity of the Holly Bush starts to become obvious.

The bar snacks, which are ONLY available at lunchtime, are excellent too. Most are home made and home cooked from locally sourced ingredients. The home-made chips are yummy

What a lovely evening at the hollybush, great gin wonderful pie and helpful friendly staff xx

We took 3 Young boys for a walk across the fields with the end destination being The Holly Bush.

Between the adults we sampled the Timothy Taylor, mango cider, moonshine and a few others but it got a bit misty after the first few. We had the pie platter and cheese platter to abate some of the alcohol! The pies were ALL delicious and the selection of cheeses included sage derby. 3 young boys catered for brilliantly too and the pub was welcoming to children.

All round an excellent pub!

We have just been for lunch with our 3 dogs.. we both had the burgers and they were DELICIOUS!! Best burger I’ve had in a long time.. Cheers!

User

We did a 10 pub Derbyshire pub crawl. A lot of us agreed that this was our favourite pub of the day. Great selection of bears and ciders. The bar snacks were amazing.

This is the best pub in the world

Sunday roast, the traditional way - quality and quantity just right, with tender, flavoursomee ingredients, cooked to perfection and a perfect ale to accompany. Apple and berry crumble was a revelation as a dessert - a real home-made feel with flavour and texture. All of this beside a lovely warm open fire. We shall return!

On Friday 27th January We held my Father in laws wake at the Holly Bush Inn. My F.I.L had in the past enjoyed the odd pint there right to within the last months of his life and had requested we did this. The kind people there not only provided a great light buffet but their attention and service was 1st class. We will always be grateful to you and cannot recommend you all highly enough.

Lovely place to take your dog and food was excellent and had a few gluten free options too. Lovely friendly people a great place to go if you love to talk and fuss dogs and if you don’t. Will be back soon. 🐶

Lovely friendly local pub! Barmaid Kate is a lovely bubbly girl 😊 definitely be visiting again

User

I visited back in February with my Mother in Law and Aunt as a treat for my birthday. After a lovely meal I decided to visit again today with my friends. A perfect stop half way through our 6 mile walk around Belper. Able to accommodate dogs with a lovely gesture of water bowls and dog biscuits which Harley was thankful for. The sun was shinning so we sat out in the garden. The lady who served us was very friendly and so helpful making sure we were having a lovely time. The food was beautiful and we all enjoyed a few beers and wines before setting off again to finish our walk.

Perfect ...will definitely be returning.

Thank you !!! Xxx

User

Good, well kept beer choice, not just 6 IPAs and fruity cider. Lovely to turn up and find a smashing selection on the beer festival menu as well. Prosecco to my partners liking. Fabulous pies. Haven't been for years so was great to find it even better than I remember. Suppose car park could be bigger but then it'd be even harder to find a seat! Don't go changing though. You'll do nicely.

User

Best pub in Derbyshire, like a permanent beer festival

User

Awesome village pub with a fantastic range of cask and craft beers and a nice selection of gins. Would highly recommend to family and friends

User

Awesome little pub hidden away - choice of ales never ceases to impress and the same for the ploughmans platters. Very dog friendly too!

User

Traditional pub, which has kept much of the pub for drinkers. Great snack and meal options, with friendly staff. Ordering food was easy and with one meal requiring a few things left out, was not a problem. I had the pie and chips, but was flakey top and not what I think of as a pie, also confusion over small and large portions, hence a 4 instead of 5

User

Lovely old pub ! great choice of drinks, food is nice, but the time they serve it is too limited, it would be preferable if they served food all day (as they're open all day) or evenings too, also last time I visited 'The Holly Bush Inn' there were WAY too many dogs in the bar ! I almost fell over one of them as there was no room to MOVE ! we left immediately as we were too squashed and uncomfortable ! very disappointing as we travelled far to visit as we like it there - (usually) - will return, but hopefully, a happier outcome.

User

I often talk about this place to friends and simply refer to it as the best pub in Derbyshire. It has the mix with food not getting in the way of excellent beers and ideas. Great atmosphere. I'll be there in week or so playing Christmas Music for their Carols by Candlelight.

User

Ive been going to the holly bush for many years and always enjoyed the atmosphere and real ales. However, after ordering some food over the weekend, was very disappointed. This is not the first time ive felt like this so feel i need to voice my opinion. The portion was small (for the cost) and hate to say it, but looked like dog food! (Actually ended up giving it to the dog!)..you can do better than this! Please dont get complacent holly bush! You can do better!
