โŒ PLEASE DONโ€™T FEED THE BEES! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ
You probably saw the advice to feed the bees with sugar water circulating on Facebook, where it was first posted and then shared thousands of times - You have just experienced the birth of a new gardening myth!
There are lots of reports of bees just sitting. No movement and no flying; they look exhausted - Bees donโ€™t live forever. Their lifespan depends on the type of bee and their role in life. Worker honey bees that are born in the spring ...only live for 6 weeks because they work hard collecting pollen and nectar. Male bumblebees only live a couple of weeks. A bee that is near the end of its life does not fly around very well. That bee that looks exhausted may need a rest, but there is a very good chance that it is dying. Feeding it wonโ€™t change that.
Bees donโ€™t need to be fed, but feeding them a bit of sugar water from a spoon wonโ€™t do any harm provided this is a one time thing. The problem is that people have expanded on the myth. If a bit of sugar water for an exhausted bee is good, then a lot of sugar water for all the bees must be better. People are starting to leave out bowls full of the stuff, or even adding it to their bird baths?!
Beekeepers warn that this can have serious consequences...
Bees take short cuts. If they can get sugar easily from a bowl rather than visiting a hundred flowers, they will do that. Upon returning to the hive theyโ€™ll tell their buddies and the rest of the colony to do the same - Before you know it, you have hundreds of bees! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
Not a big deal you say, but the bees store this sugar water in the hive along with the honey. They effectively make watered down honey. That is not good for the bees and nobody wants to buy watered down honey.
Beekeepers do feed their hives in the middle of winter if the stored food in the hive runs out, and they do use sugar solutions. But this is done because there are no flowers open at that time of year.
Beekeepers are asking us not to do this - You can help spread awareness by sharing this post โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿฅ•๐ŸŒˆ TASTE THE RAINBOW!
One of the great things about growing your own veg is that you can grow varieties that are hard to find in the shops. Multi-coloured carrots are an awesome example and they are grown in the same way as orange ones! ๐Ÿ˜„
This selection will give you a graduation of colour from pale yellow carrots that look like parsnips, to dark purple ones that are the colour of beetroot...
... โ€ข Night Bird - Dark purple / Nutty flavour
โ€ข Samurai - Red / Sweeter than orange
โ€ข Creampak - White / Sweet when raw, no peeling required.
โ€ข Yellowstone - Yellow

You know what often gets overlooked? ...Garden fences! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค—
๐Ÿก Small picket fences are a superb choice for any front garden. They create a secure boundary, without being over-imposing and the gap between the panels will allow a good amount of light to your precious plants! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒธ
โœ… TOP TIPS: Always ensure you leave a 1cm space between the ground and the vertical panels to help guard against wood rot. Also, if you have young children we suggest using a larger, stronger post to attach the gate to - Just in case they canโ€™t resist a good old swing! ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŒกโ˜€๏ธ While plants like succulents are well equipped to handle extreme heat by conserving water in their fleshy leaves, the majority of plants are not and will need extra care during lasting high temperatures! โ˜บ๏ธ
Heat stress of a plant can be recognised by wilting, which is a sure sign that water loss has taken place. If this is ignored, the condition will worsen, as the plants will eventually dry up, before dying. In some cases, yellowing of the leaves may occur. It can also b...e recognized by leaf drop, especially in trees - Many plants will actually shed some of their foliage in an attempt to conserve water.
When temperatures soar, additional watering is a given, but you can also โ€˜mulchโ€™ your plants to help conserve moisture and keep them cool. You can minimise the chance of sunburn by properly hardening off plants before planting them into their permanent home. Also, if the heat is really intense, it may be beneficial to provide a temporary shade over the plant as an extra layer of protection. Always make sure you thoroughly soak any containers until the water runs out of the drainage holes underneath and try placing water granules in them to gradually release back into the soil over time. Another option is to just simply move your potted plants to a shadier location, out of the heat of the midday sun ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘
โœ… TOP TIP: Even a layer of fresh compost on your beds will help retain moisture AND make them look lovely!

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒฟ If you have a large number of perennials, we suggest staggering some of your specimens to flower later in the season...
You can do this by pruning them NOW. Plants will grow sturdier and need less staking; which is especially useful if a warm, damp spring has resulted in lots of over-lush new growth - We call this the โ€˜Chelsea Chop!โ€™ โœ‚๏ธ
โœ… The trick is to cut back strongly growing foliage and stems of late flowering perennials, removing between a third and a half of the growth. This stimulates fresh side shoots, carrying extra flowers that will appear a little later and slightly smaller ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ”จ Putting in a new garden fence can be costly. Anything that protects the timber, and ultimately the integrity and life of the fence is going to protect your investment.
To ensure that fence panels and posts stay in tip-top condition for longer, we recommend using a quality fence treatment to protect against weathering, mould, algae, dry rot and also insect attack ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘
