Rising damp comes from the natural process of dampness in the ground rising up through the buildings structure. The damp proof course is there to stop this occurring by establishing a horizontal barrier close to the base of the building. This is to prevent the passage of moisture. As new buildings are constructed damp courses are part of the process however over a period of time these can and do start to fail. Buildings over 80 years old are particularly known for this. Early signs of a failure / breakdown of a damp proof course are noticed through discoloration of wall coverings and wall surfaces. Damaging nitrate and chloride salts come through with rising damp, these salts are hygroscopic in nature. At times of high humidity the salts absorb moisture from the air adding to overall damp problem. To correct this the plaster is removed to an height of 1000mm a chemical DPC is installed into the mortar joint using a low pressure hand cartridge gun. A two coat sand and cement render with a salt retardant additive is then applied and finished with a two coat skim. Any joinery work for either replacement / re-fit of skirting boards or architrave.
