The complete cake! 😋 soooo excited to try it!!! There are 3 pears on it but they were slippery little suckers😂 The sponges were really similar to a traditional melted butter gingerbread so they really have such a lovely shiny dark colour. Lots of crystallised ginger and ground ginger in this one... yummy 😍 Thank you GBBO and lovely contestants for the use of caramel in your recipes as I am slowly getting over my fear of burning it into a molten mass of🔥... Love that this cake is filled and topped with cream cheese frosting.... I may have tried a little 😇 I was a bit too enthusiastic about starting the cake and forgot to poach the pears straight away...I know...rookie mistake.. so I put them on and started on the little gingerbread house (lol .. not so little in my case) Thank you so much for this beautiful recipe Kimjoy , I would love to hear what you think? **GBBO Technical Challenge Week 5** ~ Spice Week In celebration of the Great British Bake Off here is Kavanagh’s take on Bonfire Night Ginger Cake with Cinder Toffee. This was such an exciting cake to make 😃there were so many elements to it and sooooo much ginger!!! If you don’t like ginger this is not the cake for you... but I have to say this feels like it could end up on my Christmas Table 😋... So, the sponges surprised me as there were no extra raising agents, but I followed the recipe and they worked out really well. I know I mentioned the ginger but, wow there is soooo much... It made the kitchen smell amazing. After I made my 3 little 8” sponges I started on the Swiss buttercream.... I have never made such a rich one before but the fact that you add your homemade caramel to it and then some more ginger to it really works!!! Honestly... I hate making caramel because I always go too far with the colour and burn the pan but I literally planted myself in front of the stove and waited with the cream and salt at the ready 🤓 then as it went much darker (like maple syrup) I went into action. Cream went in and I stirred like hell until I got a lovely smooth caramel, threw the salt in after... really makes a difference😀 When the caramel cools down you can add it to the Swiss buttercream, I cheated and held a little back for the drizzle 😉 The sponges then got docked with a cocktail stick and covered in the ginger syrup from the jar. More ginger...6 balls, are blitzed into teeny pieces and added to half of the buttercream. This one fills between the layers and the other one is the outside coating... perfecto! Making the ginger cinder toffee was fun.... always feels like magic and childhood 🙂 Anyway, all put together now.... so worth trying...love, love, love it 😍 @kimjoyskitchen @brionymaybakes @manonlagreve @karenwrightbake @britishbakeoff #gbbo #gbbo2018 #gingercake #gingerstem #bonfirenight #cindertoffee #pudding #cake #bake #glutenfree #bakeoff #challenge #technical #thegreatbritishbakeoff2018 #teamkimjoy #kimjoy #love #spiceweek #teambriony #manonslittlekitchen #starbaker #kavanaghskitchen #kavanaghstearoom #instafood #instacool #instagram @vredshaw

Had such a great evening last night discussing our last book.
Our next book is very apt for this moth of October being 'The Chalk Man' by C.J.Tudor. Hopefully won't be too scared to finish it👻😀

Did you see the bake off??? Omg that technical Challenge was tricky... I do love a challenge, however I hadn’t heard of a few of the ingredients and when I tried to order the moulds they couldn’t be delivered Until mid Oct....So, I have decided that this is fate 😉and I should challenge myself with another bake from Spice Week... I hope you will forgive me 😇 so I have chosen Rahul’s Bonfire Night Ginger Cake with Cinder Toffee.... a stunning cake.... but most of all, because I... want to try it 😋😍😋🍰 #gbbo #gbbo2018 #maamoul #gingercake #gingerstem #bonfirenight #cindertoffee #pudding #cake #bake #bakeoff #challenge #howsthatpossible #thegreatbritishbakingshow #thegreatbritishbakeoff #teamkimjoy #kimjoy #love #spiceweek #teambriony #manonslittlekitchen #starbaker #yay #hombaker #kavanaghstearoom #kavanaghskitchen #instfood #instagram #instacool

Without a doubt our favourite place to visit when we come down to Oakham. Such a cute, friendly and beautiful place to stop for tea and cake. The staff are fabulous and the cakes are out of this world.

User

What a lovely time we had it was our 31st wedding anniversary so it was a special treat to be served afternoon tea by the wonderful staff even the pesky wasp didn't spoil a beautiful afternoon thank you soooo much. ❤️

User

We recently visited Kavanagh's Tea Room for the Alice In Wonderland afternoon tea. The room was beautifully decorated, with all sorts of creative, handcrafted details from the story books, which my daughters both loved spotting, and the food and drinks we were served were wonderful. The afternoon tea consisted of a selection of delicious sandwiches and a whole host of cakes, biscuits and scones, plus of course pots of tea (from a huge variety). Certainly great value for money! The adults had The March Hare cocktail, and the children had hot chocolate, both served in beautiful teapots, adding perfectly to the 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' effect! Decor, food and drink aside, I can honestly say I have never received such exceptional service. Each and every member of staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. They each went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed and a

were having a lovely time. I would highly recommend.

User

We had the Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea yesterday. It was wonderful, to know that everything was gluten free was a real treat especially for someone with coeliac disease. The staff were so friendly, polite and welcoming. The food was amazing, delicious and a real feast for the eyes as well as the body! Our children (5 and 2) loved it as much as we did, they were made to feel very welcome and loved the cakes and sandwiches. Thy were thrilled to get a pot of hot chocolate to share. We even got to take the cakes that we couldn't manage to eat home with us for later. We will definitely be back to visit many more times. Thank you so much.

User

We came here today as a celebration for my birthday, it was our first visit and won’t be the last. We had afternoon tea and it was delicious. Being a coeliac myself, I was thrilled to see the beautiful gluten free food and it tasted gorgeous, great choices on the main menu too. My party were surprised to see that their cakes/scones were gf too. The rolls were light and fluffy.

I would highly recommend a visit to this tearoom. The staff were fantastic and the mis-matched china is great and makes the whole experience for afternoon tea. Keep up the good work

User

Our 2nd visit.

Very friendly staff and proprietors, serving great food, clearly prepared and presented with care and attention by people who love food. My wife is gluten free and so hasn’t had lemon meringue pie in 3 years, but she had some here and loved every morsel.

The setting is fab, nothing matches, but that’s the look they have gone for and it just works. Keep up the good work guys, it’s worth our drive over from Grantham just to visit you. Can’t recommend you enough.

User

My friend, my screaming baby godson and I had the loveliest welcome here last week. They helped us with the buggy and got us settled in a cosy corner with excellent tea, coffee and cake. Anthony gave me an excellent lesson in how to perfect a flat white so that I could make it at home. I haven't quite perfected it yet, so I'm might have to visit again! We were only able to leave once everyone had given my little godson cuddles!

A really lovely place to spend an afternoon.

User

My best friend and I went here last weekend for afternoon tea we had a lovely range of sandwiches, the cakes were to die for, especially the scones

The tea leaves were also so yummy! I am so fussy when it comes to tea, and this was my favourite by far!

We will definitely be visiting again soon!

User

Lovely afternoon at Kavanaghs for the Beauty and the Beast afternoon tea today. Fantastic selection of sandwiches and cakes and they catered perfectly for me not being able to have certain things! Staff were so lovely and the amazing milkshakes were the cherry on top! Thank you, we will definitely be back!

User

I’ve been here a few times and keep meaning to review it so here goes. I’ve been for afternoon tea twice - once for the Harry Potter afternoon (so amazing!) and traditional afternoon tea. The set dressing and theming of the Harry Potter were exceptional. I’ve done a fair few Harry Potter events but this was beautifully and professionally done. My two girls were enchanted and not just by the set dressing but the star was definitely the food. It was just sublime. Everything was delicate and fresh but with defined flavours that you could imagine being served at hogwarts! If you have the opportunity to do one of their themed teas - jump at the chance! You will not be disappointed and children are most certainly welcome and catered to.

Yesterday I took my sister in law and my girls to afternoon tea and again, we were not disappointed. My SIL is gluten free and often finds the substitutions offered are poor or completely different to what we are offered. Not so here! If we hadn’t been told which was the gluten free stand we would not have known. The bread was open textured and hand baked on site. The scones actually held together and were served just warm. The smell was amazing. We also had Victoria sponge, brownies and raspberry eclairs. My girls couldn’t eat quick enough and loved all the flavours and using the vintage china.

No request was too difficult and the staff are always so friendly and open. A special mention to Anthony who served us and managed to keep both my girls giggling and chatting whilst eating. Kudos for the Disney knowledge that kept them entertained whilst we ate!

You can’t go wrong if you come here, every time we’ve been the food, the service and the atmosphere make it a special occasion.

User

If I could give more than 5 stars I would! We attended the Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea and it was simply beautiful! All the attention to detail had this Alice fan in her element! The food was amazing and the cocktails where to die for! Was our 2nd time at the tea room and it did not disappoint! The staff are wonderful, well mannered and happy to help! Thank you for a fantastic experience we will definitely be back again!

I have visited Kavanagh's tea Rooms a couple of times now & always been welcomed with a friendly smile. Well worth a visit either resident of Oakham or not.

I had a wonderful lunch today with my parents. The service was excellent with nice and pleasant staff. The sandwiches, scones and cakes were delicious. The selection of teas and other drinks are very good too !! (I chose the "Moon Palace" Green Tea). I would recommend it to my friends. It is a big "thumbs up" from me !!

Had a fabulous 'Alice in Wonderland' themed afternoon tea to celebrate mums birthday -adults and children alike had lots of fun! Room was decorated lovely, staff so friendly, welcoming and attentive. -Nothing was any trouble -with more food and drink top ups offered. And the Gluten Free scones were the best I had ever tasted!! Thank you to all staff whom made this a wonderful experience ! X

First time in this lovely place and enjoyed a super lunch to celebrate my Mum’s birthday. Fab food and lovely loose leaf tea, plus a rather delicious milkshake. The staff were wonderful, really friendly and clearly passionate about what they do - what brilliant service! Will certainly be calling in again.

User

Fantastic everything! They clearly love what they do and it shines through in everything. Super friendly staff, gorgeous location and I particulary love the Edwardian parlour decor. A lovely place to enjoy a pot of real loose leaf tea and the food is fantastic (although I'm yet to try their hot food because well, the sweet treats are always so tempting!) they even cater for gluten free and dairy free, which is great and means I can finally have afternoon tea with my husband! It's a must go (and eat) place in Oakham or me. Thank you so very much

Claire and staff hosted my daughters baby shower last weekend, despite being Easter weekend and busy, they were extremely helpful. We could deliver our flowers early and decorate the room. The food kept on coming, more sandwiches were brought up. The fresh raspberry eclairs were divine and everyone enjoyed the afternoon. Highly recommend.

Thank you all very much, will be bringing baby Delilah in for breakfast when she arrives!!

User

An absolutely stunning setting for any occasion. We had the most wonderfully delicious afternoon tea, just the right amount of sweet and savoury washed down with a huge pot of tea The owners and staff were friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable about the listed building and its history, but most importantly provided impeccable customer service. Attentive but unobtrusive.

The setting is fab, nothing matches, but that’s the look they have gone for and it just works. Keep up the good work guys, it’s worth our drive over from Grantham just to visit you. Can’t recommend you enough.

My best friend and I went here last weekend for afternoon tea we had a lovely range of sandwiches, the cakes were to die for, especially the scones

The tea leaves were also so yummy! I am so fussy when it comes to tea, and this was my favourite by far!

We will definitely be visiting again soon!

Most of all Clare made my 40th birthday cake of Champagne & Chocolate which was out of this world! I would love to upload a photo but unfortunately I'm not able too.
