Lady Manners School has a very supportive Parents’ Association. All parents and carers of current students are members of the Association, and are very welcome to meetings and to help the small and friendly band of parents who raise much appreciated funds for the school.
One effective fund raiser are the regular car boot sales held at school, which regularly raise several hundred pounds, all of which benefits all students at the school.
The next car boot sale takes place thi...s Sunday 9 September 7.30am (7.00am for sellers) to 1.00pm. Please visit www.ladymanners.net/carbootsales for more details.
The Parents’ Association would really appreciate any offers of assistance in the run up to the event and during the morning itself (email parentsassociationlms@gmail.com). Alternatively, if you are a dab hand in the kitchen, perhaps you could bake a cake for them to sell to hungry car booters? Please leave any cakes for sale with school reception on Friday.
If you are not able to help on this occasion, do come along to buy or to sell…or just to browse and have a piece of cake or a bacon butty!

After a relatively quiet start yesterday (a day devoted to our new Year 7 and Year 12 students), we welcomed back all of our students today. The school was once again a hive of activity.
Students and staff have settled back into lessons. Regular clubs and activities will restart shortly but, in the meantime, we’re providing lunchtime opportunities for Year 7 students to spend some extra-curricular time with friends at a range of activities from board games to rugby and from drama to watching sci-fi films.
Today, Year 7 students at Languages Club were designing a cake. The winning design will be created in sponge and icing in celebration of the forthcoming European Languages Day.

Today was the first day of the new school year for our Year 7 and Year 12 students.
The day was devoted to these new students as they met new classmates and form tutors, and started to find their way around the school. It was lovely to see their excitement and enthusiasm throughout the day.
Tomorrow we welcome back our Year 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 students. We’re looking forward to seeing them again after the summer break.

Staff were back in school today (an Inset Day) to make final preparations for the start of the new school year.
The premises team (and others) have been very busy over the last six weeks with dozens of projects, big and small, to keep the school in good working order. Amongst many other projects, these include floor refurbishment, equipment servicing, rugby and football pitch installation, ground and fence maintenance and the decoration of various rooms in the school.
One ...very visible and welcome improvement is the transformation of the Anniversary Garden, between the Main Hall and the Languages Corridor. The weather damaged brickwork has been repaired and the seating replaced. Thank you to the Parents' Association of Lady Manners School, which donated the funds to undertake this work. It looks wonderful!
We are ready and waiting to meet our Year 7 and Year 12 students on their first day in school on Tuesday 4 September. We look forward to welcoming back all other year groups on Wednesday 5 September.

Following on from record A Level results for Year 13, GCSE results this year show that our Year 11 students also have reason for celebration.
46 students achieved at least seven full GCSEs at grade 7 or better (equivalent to the old grades A and A*). Within this group, 11 students actually gained the very highest grade possible (the grade 9) in at least five of their qualifications – a very impressive achievement.
Very well done to all! We wish them all the best of luck for the future – and hope to see many of them back in Year 12 at Lady Manners School Sixth Form in September.

We have just found out that one of our Year 13 students, Isobella Cottrell, has been nominated for a national netball award along with Mrs Athey, one of our PE Teachers.
Isobella has been nominated in the ‘Young Volunteer’ category and Mrs Athey in the Teacher of the Year category. Lady Manners School has benefitted hugely from all the work put in to netball by these two people.
If you wish to support the nomination for either (or both), please visit https://www.englandnetball.co.uk/…/2018 -vitality-goalden-g…/ to place your votes.

Congratulations to our Year 13 students, who have achieved one of the school’s best set of A Level results!
Of the 129 Year 13 students who completed their A Levels this year, seven achieved the highest grades of A or A* in four full A Level subjects. A further 16 students achieved A or A* passes in three A levels. In addition to this, many students have achieved or exceeded expectations in their results. These are wonderful achievements and a number of students also took the Extended Project Qualification and those results are strong too.
We are delighted for them all and wish them the best of luck, wherever their futures take them.

We welcome you to our school during our Open Evenings on:
Thursday 27 September, 4 – 6.30pm Monday 1 October, 5 - 7.30pm
... Parents of Year 6 students are currently facing an exciting decision: which secondary school to choose. Every school differs in its approach, structure and staff. Each school has its own unique ‘feel’ or atmosphere. You can only get a real impression of a school by visiting it.
Our Open Evenings offer the opportunity to view our school and to talk to teachers and students. At Lady Manners School we are proud of our staff and students; many of them will be available to show you around and to answer your questions.
The Open Evenings will be of particular interest to Year 6 students and their parents but all are welcome.

Year 8 and 9 students have recently returned from a trip to Bernières-sur-mer in Normandy.
The smooth ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Caen was aboard a refurbished boat which had fantastic facilities including an on-board cinema!
The students learned a great deal about the Normandy landings during the Second World War from the German gun battery at Longues-sur-mer, the 360˚cinema at Arromanches and the Pegasus Bridge Memorial where they found out about the gliders used in t...he campaign. The visits to both the American and British War Cemeteries were very moving and thought provoking. The group’s coach driver, who played the trumpet in a military band, kindly played the last post at the end of our visit to the British War Cemetery.
The trip included visits to the Bayeux Tapestry and cathedral, which seemed a particular favourite with many of the students, and a cider and apple juice farm which gave students the opportunity to find out about typical Normandy produce and how it is made. By contrast, a trip to Festyland Theme Park was great fun - and very wet!
One of the real highlights of the trip was the bakery where Eric the baker taught the students in French how to make their own baguettes. Students expanded their French vocabulary and really enjoyed the whole experience especially as they could eat their bread afterwards.
Thank you to the staff, who gave up their time to make the trip possible and to the students, who were very good company and a credit to the school.

Each year, the Wrench Shield is awarded to the house with the best performance during the year. The shield is presented in memory of Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Mason Wrench, a keen educationalist who concluded his full and eventful life in Baslow, and who was a Governor of Lady Manners School. Dates on the shield go back to 1912, when the house system was instigated and there were only three houses: North, South and Town.
The house events included in the competition ...are: badminton, basketball, chess, cricket, cross country (boys and girls), dance, enterprise, football (boys), hockey (boys and girls), house points, literacy quiz, netball, quiz, rounders, rugby, softball, sports day (boys, girls and overall) and tennis.
This year, the competition has been intense and very close, and we are delighted to announce that the winner is (by one point)…Taylor. Well done to everyone in Taylor!

As we approach the summer holidays, we thought we’d share part of a display that we’ve been lucky enough to see in the Art Department. Year 9 have created these images as part of a ‘Packaging Project’.
Thank you Year 9 for brightening our days!

Members of our Gardening and Horticulture Club will be having a delicious tea tonight, following the harvesting of their new potato crop this lunchtime.
The students have been tending their potatoes for several months and the benefits of their care and attention became obvious as their bounty was unearthed.
Well done – these spuds look delicious!

We are very proud of our extra-curricular activities at Lady Manners School. We run more than 80 clubs and our annual survey indicates that 83% of our students benefitted by taking part in one or more of them this year.
The clubs and activities on offer include all manner of music groups such as choirs for all ages, bands, ensembles and full and jazz orchestras. Our sporting teams and clubs range from hockey and football to rugby and our Equestrian Team and everything in be...tween. In addition, this year we have offered many more unusual clubs such as Zoo Keepers Club, First Lego League Competition Club, Chess Club, History Club, SkRaP (where students can chill out to the sounds of ska, reggae and punk music).
Of course, none of this would be possible without the staff who run and support the clubs. We thank them for the efforts and time they invest in providing our students with these extra-curricular opportunities.
Full details of what has been on offer are available at www.ladymanners.net/clubs. Work has started on our offering for 2018-19 and details will be launched at the start of the Autumn Term.

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark by the British Dyslexia Association.
The accreditation is rare in mainstream secondary schools with Lady Manners School joining only a handful of UK secondary schools in this achievement. It has involved two years of work led by the school’s Learning Support Department, and embraced by all teaching and support staff in the school.
The British Dyslexia Association assessor, who visited us last week, was impressed at the extent to which staff work to improve learning for all of our students. Find out more about our provision for students our Dyslexia Friendly Quality Award at www.ladymanners.derbyshire.sch.uk/news/‚Ä ¶

Months of careful tending by the Gardening and Horticulture Club have paid off as all students now benefit from a lovely display in the Anniversary Garden, between the Main Hall and the Languages Corridor.
This area itself is due for some careful tending over the summer holidays, as our premises team repair some weather-damaged brickwork and seating. In the meantime, it is still a rather nice sun-trap for students to enjoy during the lunch break, improved by the efforts of our green-fingered students.

As we approach the end of the Summer Term, our Year 9 students are preparing to start their studies for GCSE and life in Upper School.
We mark this progression with Year 9 Transition Week in which students take part in activities designed to ease their move from Lower to Upper School. Today, the final day of Transition Week involved all Year 9 students in team-building activities. The students rose to the challenge and worked well together to solve tactical problems – with a lot of laughter along the way!
