Music Production 101: (Editing) "When making edits, it is far less important whether or not you can cut/paste perfectly on-beat, but more important that the song makes sense musically and carries the vibe unnoticed". /Major

... When we recently recorded LitaMarie's new single, "No More Rain", the horn parts had to be moved because they were stepping all over her words in one of the verses. (Keep in mind that I should have edited the track BEFORE recording - but time was not on our side.) The backing track is an old Studio One riddim, and the horn section needed to play during her chorus. The tempo in the chorus section (without horns) was also slower, due to the band drifting in the original recording - so now what? I certainly couldn't move the horns separately, it was a stereo/2-track mix - probably recorded in 1654! PLUS, the arrangement/instrumentation was different.😨
The solution was to find a section/s with the same/similar tempo - but also with similar instrumentation that could progress from the out point of the verse section, to the input of the new chorus section (with horns). This would also need to be done to the end of the new chorus section - into the next part of the song. The key was to edit the new arrangement without any abrupt transitions, whether audibly or rhythmically. I had to also make sure that all her vocal performances, including the spaces where her phrases and ad libs ended still made sense musically.
Conclusion / It is usually easier to make these kinds of edits on an electronically sequenced track (beat🙄), but it can be rather challenging with a track created by live musicians, that may have some imperfections and/or tempo fluctuations.
My main point / Don't rely solely on "technology" to edit your music - use your ears, body-clock/feel, and basic music sense.😊
