About Leicester Cathedral

Leicester's Cathedral - the heart of the city and county. A place of calm and transcendence in our busy lives.

Leicester Cathedral Description

Leicester Cathedral is a Grade II* listed building on the site of a Roman temple. The present St Martins church dates from the Norman period and has evolved continuously since then, notably in the Victorian period, but more work was done in 1927 when it became a cathedral. Since March 2015 the cathedral has housed the tomb of King Richard III.

Open 365 days of the year for daily services. For visitors to Richard III's tomb please see times below.

Eucharist Monday at 0830, Morning Prayer Tue-Fri at 0830,

Eucharist each weekday (except Mon and Sat) at 1300 and Evening Prayer /Evensong each day at 17. 30.

Sunday: Morning Prayer 0740, Eucharist (BCP) at 0800, Cathedral Eucharist at 1030, Evensong / Evening Prayer 1600

Normal entry times to visit as a tourist or to see the tomb of King Richard III are 10. 00am – 5. 00pm Monday – Saturday. Sundays are set aside solely as a day for prayer and worship and so it is not normally possible to visit the tomb on this holy day.

Leicester Cathedral is generally open from 8. 00am – 6. 00pm Monday to Saturday, and from 8. 00am – 4. 00pm on Sundays.

There are events, festivals and services (e. g. funerals and recitals) which interrupt this pattern week by week. If in doubt, please telephone and check during normal office hours.

During our daily services of Morning Prayer (8. 30am), Eucharist (1. 00pm) and Evensong /Evening Prayer (5. 30pm), everyone is welcome to join us, but it is not possible to visit as a tourist or to see the tomb at these times.

The Cathedral Facebook site reflects all the work we do as the focus for the Bishop's ministry and the on-going life of the Cathedral, and also the work to reinter King Richard III. On all these topics, we welcome comment and ask for courtesy in the views expressed.

Joyous service marking 25 years of women as priests in the Church of England followed by cake, bubbles and balloons! Huge appreciation from all of us for Canon Alison and Canon Karen, our current female Residentiary Canons and for so many other women who have served here.

Come and see the portrait, discover the discovery at the Richard III Visitor Centre and reflect with us in the presence of his earthly remains at his tomb and memorial windows.

75 years ago, on the 6 June, 1944, the largest seaborne invasion force in history set sail for France on a mission to liberate Europe. This day would go down in history as D-Day. The focus for the City and County’s commemoration of this significant anniversary will be a service to be held at here today, Thursday 6th June at 5.30pm, attended by the Lord-Lieutenant, the Lord Mayor, the Chairman of the County Council, and other civic dignitaries. All welcome to join us

All welcome to join us for an evening of prayer led by Bishop Martyn, for Thy Kingdom Come. TONIGHT, Tuesday 4 June 6.30-7.30pm.
Ever since the first days of the early Church, in the period between Ascension and Pentecost Christians have gathered to pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the last few years, this has been given a new lease of life through the Archbishops of Canterbury and York’s initiative “Thy Kingdom Come”, praying that the Spirit would equip and inspire Christians to share the good news of Jesus Christ with friends and families, communities and networks. It is especially good to hold this service in the context of the Methodist Art Collection, as that too seeks to inspire others to hear God speaking to them and to explore their own relationship with the divine.
