Dying Matters Week 2019: Are We Ready?
Every year in May, Dying Matters Awareness Week gives us all a great opportunity talk openly about dying, death and bereavement with friends and loved ones. This year, the week will run from 13-19 of May and the theme is Are We Ready?
It’s a question that challenges each of us on several levels. Are We Ready for our own deaths, or the deaths of those we care about? This is a practical question – wills, funeral planning and more – but of ...course it’s also emotional, even spiritual for some of us. For many of us, the answer will not be ‘yes’.
Research shows that most people haven’t taken care of the practical aspects, which include writing a will, deciding on organ donation, and planning our future care.
Local events The local NHS will be taking the message out to members of the public during Dying Matters Week with stalls at the following locations: • Tuesday 14th May, 9am – 4.30pm, Beaumont Leys shopping centre, Leicester, LE4 1DE • Friday 17th May, 9am – 4.30pm, Haymarket shopping centre, Leicester city centre, LE1 3YH
A further opportunity to talk about death and dying in a respectful, non-judgemental group (with tea and biscuits provided) is at a specially organised ‘Death Café’: • Saturday 18th May, 10am – 12pm, G Sellers, 75 Upper Bond Street, Hinckley, LE10 1RF Anyone is welcome to come along for chat, but for more information email Malc and Jane at 43sixacres@gmail.com.

LPT is hosting part of a cutting-edge arts festival. One installation from the Art AI (Artificial Intelligence) Festival has been placed in the reception area of the Neville Centre for a month.
The exhibit by artist Gene Kogan is called “Neural Synthesis”. It features constantly changing psychedelic images shown on a 55-inch plasma screen. One aim is to see whether people with memory problems have a different reaction to those without.
... It was commissioned specially for the Art AI Festival to consider the effects on older people including those with dementia.
The Neville Centre, on the Leicester General Hospital site, is home for many of LPT’s memory clinics.
The installation is not open to the general public, but the same artwork will be on public display at Leicester Central Library in Bishop Street, near Leicester Town Hall from May 16.
This is the second year that Leicester has hosted the Art AI Festival. The public elements of the festival will run between 16-31 May in the Highcross and Haymarket shopping centres, Phoenix Arts, Haymarket Theatre, and Leicester Central Library.
Tracy Harwood (on the right of the photo), professor of digital culture at the Institute of Creative Technologies (De Montfort University), is the director of the Art AI Festival. She said: “We're running a data collection exercise around the Neville Centre installation. We will aim to publish the results in a journal in due course, and hopefully use this as the basis of further research.
“We have a series of activities running across the city, of which the installation in the Neville Centre is one part - but a contained part.
“I’m asking a bigger question – what do we understand of this technology, and what are we going to do with it?
“I particularly wanted older people to be involved.”
Elizabeta Mukaetova-Ladinska (on the left), professor in old age psychiatry (University of Leicester) and LPT consultant, is working in collaboration with Tracy on the installation at LPT. She said: “We know conventional art can improve the mood and anxiety levels of people with dementia, we don’t know if art produced through Artificial Intelligence can do the same.”
Feedback surveys can be found in the reception area and staff and service users.
Follow the rest of the festival activities at www.art-ai.dmu.ac.uk @ArtAIFestival ArtAIFestLeics (Instagram) and #ARTAI2019.
