Mining in the Northeast: Talk & Supper with Wild Dog Outdoors 🌲 Friday 14th September 🔥
Tuck into a hearty stew supper in The Gatehouse and enjoy a very informative and entertaining talk given by Wild Dog Outdoors, who'll tunnel through the history of mining in the North East.
... Mining in The North East 🔦 The mineral resources of Britain have been a hot commodity for thousands of years and have shaped our history, landscape and culture. Within living memory, the North East has been exploited for coal, iron and lead. The scars of this industry remain present in the landscape (See Shildon Engine House, pictured, a few minutes walk from the Crewe). While many sites above ground have been reclaimed by nature, and softened over time, underground it is a different story… The tunnels remain preserved, often in the same conditions as when the last miners walked out. Hidden within the hundreds of miles of this subterranean world are pony tracks, hobnail boot prints and ballrooms. Hear more from Wild Dog Outdoors!

What a pleasant discovery!!

We casually stopped for lunch today and we were welcomed by friendly and CANNY staff (let's go by the menu's syllabus).

We ate outside on the BONNY garden, the service was quick and our Flank Steak & Egg was simply LUSH.

What it could have been an average spot of lunch, it turned out to be a wow experience.

The Lord Crewe Arms has it all, a spectacular building, the staff makes you feel at home and the food... yeah the food wasn't average for sure!!

Thank you and see you again soon.

User

What a beautiful place. I hosted a dinner where I talked about the lakes distillery gin. Tara who assisted me was really lovely and helpful.

All the staff I met were friendly and I wish I had had the chance to stay overnight. Maybe another time. The food was beautiful too. The friendliness of the guests was amazing. I was made to feel welcome and we had a few laughs along the way. Thank you

User

We’ve just returned from our second visit at the LCA. We find it just superb in every way.

We were overwhelmed, once again, by the decor, the appointment of the room, the food and above all, the courtesy and friendliness of the staff. All the waitressing staff, bar staff and Peter the Porter all have a few friendly words to exchange, it’s a delight to stay there.

Food was spot on and we particularly enjoyed our wine tasting experience with Helen Savage, informal yet highly informative and very interesting, all served beautifully in the hotel’s Gatehouse across the street.

What a wonderful weekend we had.

User

Well our first time at The Crewe and we will definitely be back, the decor is spot on and well thought out with great touches to enhance the amazing building the whole place is spotless (no really spotless) the staff are friendly and helpful... Breakfast was lovely the coffee and apple juice were quality the old Northumberland fry was tasty and substantial. Our room was the lovely Tom Forster with amazing character windows and the touches you expect from a top class establishment, in room coffee not instant thankfully with additional great little bit of tablet as a sweet treat. All in all a gem in Northumberland

User

We are half way through our stay at this amazing place. We are staying in Whiteheaps complete with log burner and beautiful roll top bath. The staff here are wonderful, nothing is too much trouble. The food is delicious and the tiny village quaint and perfect, this is our first visit but it won’t be our last

User

The Lord Crewe arms is phenomenal.

The setting and hotel is superb, very picturesque and steeped in history, they offer every modern comfort but kept everything as original as possible.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 days over our wedding, along side the rest of the wedding party. We couldn’t have been treated any better, every member of staff took the time to congratulate us, ask about our day and made such an effort with us

Our room was amazing, comfortable, well equipped and cleaned to an excellent standard, everything was simply perfect.

The friendliness of the bar area and staff was simply fantastic, we sat down and instantly felt at home, the evening food and breakfast was so good, cooked to perfection and presented exceptionally well.

Overall The Lord Crewe arms is outstanding, we left for our wedding here, spent the first day as a married couple here and wouldn’t have wanted to be any where else. We will be returning for birthdays and anniversary’s and cannot wait.

Thank you so much for playing a part in our wedding and showing us the ‘Crewe’ hospitality.

User

Thank you so much to the wonderful staff at the Lord Crewe Arms, we stayed here the weekend of our wedding eight weeks ago, and from first booking with Linda, over a year ago, right through to check out everyone at the hotel has been amazing. Each of the hotel buildings and surrounding areas are truly amazing and provided our families with the most perfect location to celebrate together. This is truly an amazing hotel, and will always have a place in our hearts, thank you x

User

Such a beautiful village with this place at the heart of it. Thank you so much for making our 70th celebrations for our Papa John so wonderful in every way. From the moment of our arrival, we were made to feel very special and enjoyed each and every bit from the crypt bar to the dining room and all the character and charm of the place in between. Special thanks to the ‘night porter’ who educated us on the history of the place; it was lovely to hear his passion for everything and we will be back very soon for more wonderful food and wine !! Xx

User

Popped to Blanchland and the Lord Crewe Arms, on the advise of one of the managers from Slaley Hall.

Lovely lunch there and very interested in staying with our 2 labs, in the near future .

User

Just back having spent 2 nights for our sons wedding nearby with 23 family/friends. A very special place to stay. We all went round each others rooms to compare, stunning. Had the Chefs Feast the first night, very, very tasty. Staff were simply the best, very friendly, nothing was too much bother. Didn't want to leave. Lord Crewe Arms, thanks for having us, we will be back.

User

Had a wonderful time at the Special Vegetarian evening at the Gatehouse last night. Absolutely gorgeous, creative food, delivered with great warmth and charm by the chef, who talked us through each dish.

User

Great stay at the Lord Crewe.

Fabulous rooms, friendly staff, food outstanding. Loved the vaulted bar!

Thanks to all the staff at the Crewe.

Highly recommend!

User

Called in to the Lord Crewe Arms yesterday for a quick liquid refreshment ( couple of beers ) whilst having a drive around the area. The staff are all extremely friendly and the pub/hotel is immaculately presented. We sat in the garden enjoying the sun, there were plenty of tables which were all clean and clear of used glasses etc. The beer was excellent and reasonably priced, all in all well worth the stop over. Thanks guys keep up the good work

User

We just popped in on a gorgeous Summer day for one drink as we had the car and it was my first time in Blanchland. Was really nice and the beer garden is beautiful . Great pint and a small white wine but was quite pricey, hence only 4 stars.

User

The place is amazing, stayed two nights for a wedding we where going to , room was lovely and had everything you wanted , but the wardrobe was to small for us to hand are suits and wedding dresses up, so had to hang them upon the back of the bathroom door

User

Having dinned here many times over the years, the food, setting and service has always been fantastic.

So I was surprised when dinning there yesterday, having booked a table we were placed in the small 4/5 table area where both doors were kept open, thus turning the room into a wind corridor, despite closing a door every now and again which was opened up as fast as we were closing. The speed of service lacked its normal prompt bustle, it was busy but when is it not on a bank holiday weekend,. yet the time between our courses grew with each one, and we were left almost unchecked to allow us to order more drinks until a course was due. Then a simple thing the £19 duck main course did not come with sides, we had ordered fries & Salad these failed to turn up and when chased were told they would be with us shortly, then another waitress arrived who did not know anything about them so we cancelled them, the then senior waitress arrived and we had finished our main at this point, she informed us that we would not be charged for the items that did not arrive (kind of goes without saying really) no apology - yet again a delay on the deserts - felt a little let down by the Lord Crewe on this visit.

User

Beautiful building and setting, however, it's a shame about the snobby, rude staff.

The food was average and overpriced, yet that can be overlooked when enjoying it in the beautiful beer garden and surroundings.

What is inexcusable in an establishment such as this is the obnoxious staff. I found the staff to be incredibly snobby and rude.

Perhaps a customer service course wouldn't go amiss?

Overall, very disappointing.
