“What we are reading” – each week we will post a recommendation, fiction and non-fiction, recently read and enjoyed by staff and volunteers at #Northallerton library. #WeAreReading
This week Elivia has recommended Alex Garland’s The Beach (1996)
In Bangkok, British traveller Rich is given a map to an unspoilt paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, once there he embraces the idyll of life on the island and the ways of the self-sufficient community of travellers who have made it the...ir home, but the utopia shatters in unsettling and disturbing ways… "I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down - it has such a sense of adventure, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves books on travel. Being based in Thailand, The Beach has helped me with my forthcoming travels there – giving me a sense of place and slight familiarity of the areas I will be travelling to."

“What we are reading” - each week we will post a recommendation, fiction and non-fiction, recently read and enjoyed by staff and volunteers at #Northallerton library. #WeAreReading
Starting with a recommendation by our volunteer Mike…
Rachel Seiffert, A Boy in Winter. London: Virago, 2017.
... "A Boy in Winter is set in Ukraine, and involves the fate of Jewish people there following the German invasion during the Second World War. The novel also features a German road engineer who finds his doubts about the Nazis beginning to trouble his conscience. Seiffert is excellent in her exploration of under-represented dimensions of people’s experience of Nazism and the SS. She writes in a direct, clear, precise style, with no flamboyance or fuss, and this serves to convey the identity of her characters and what they go through remarkably well."
