Nottingham Castle

About Nottingham Castle

Currently closed for a £30m Heritage Lottery Fund transformation, the site comprises a magnificent 17th-century ducal mansion built on the site of the medieval castle; now a museum and art gallery with impressive sandstone caves beneath.

Happy Friday! 🎉 Today is the last day of We Dig The Castle 2018 so we went to see how they were getting on, here’s Alice telling us about why she got involved in the dig and how much she has enjoyed the experience 👍🏻🏰

User

The staging of the football match in the grounds was fabulous. Great atmosphere, well organised (especially given the notice involved) and fun day! Loved it. Thanks NCC.

Staff are excellent...the cave tour full of history and very interesting...the view amazing...the prices were ok because for 8 £ I could visit Nottingham Castle two timesGreat job!! I loved it!!#IloveNottingham

I went yesterday with my family, it was a great time for this visit to see the castle before the renovation.

User

Amazing historical location and Nottingham's finest landmark. Beautiful views span across Nottingham and the county for miles. The original Castle may be long gone, but the Ducal Mansion, Gatehouse and Gardens provide a splendid look into Nottingham's past. Plus the intricate and spooky cave system will have the hairs on your back stand up, as the ghosts that once stayed here still wander the sandstone walls.

User

The overall experience was satisfying, reenactments featival I got to see was well crafted with people kind enough and generous and open to everyone.

It might have costed but I figure is all in favor to keeping the traditions and events alive along with the town, history, cultural heritage and everything along.

Had a good look round yesterday, which was free, and that always helps!. I enjoyed the events that were going on in the grounds, particularly the birds of prey. It's a shame more of the original castle grounds are not standing, but it's definitely worth a visit

User

Great fun day for the kids but the real bonus was the Caves Tour! Our guide was excellent and the kids were enthralled in his stories! Well worth the cost. I agree with other comments on the £20 family ticket for the castle as a little pricey though, to then have to pay an extra £20 for the cave tours. The Story of Nottingham and the Robin Hood stuff is great for the kids, really well done but there isn’t an awful lot more for them. Cave Tpur deserves 5 stars but the castle was a little disappointing in value for money!

User

Got to the castle a bit late so had a quick look at some of the items on the ground floor before the cave tour started. Found the tour very interesting and the tour guide a lot fitter then me although he was a bit older. Lots of hills and steps to climb but good fun. To tired to climb the hill back to the castle after the tour so had to stop at the olde trip to Jerusalem for a drink. Well that’s what I said to the wife Will go back after refurb.

A very nice place but very expensive to get family of 4 £20.

A nice 2-3 hours visit around the grounds and the museum of the castle. I’d recommend.

We are Nottingham people and used to get free entry with your Nottingham card. We had a walk up to check out the price to get in with our little grandson.

While my wife went in to check the price and usage of the card I stayed outside with my Grandson.

As I waited at least 6 couples came to the gate and on seeing the price decided it was too much and walked away. It's a shame it's so expensive and people feel they have to walk away. There is also a extra charge for the cave tour, too expensive for a lot of people.

Such a shame.

User

Thought that it was over priced for what you actually got. Not enough about Nottingham itself and the art was uninspiring! Grounds were well kept but nothing really special. Cafe staff were friendly and food was reasonably priced. 2 out of 3 toilets in grounds not working and area wasn't very clean.

User

I went to see it yesterday to see it for the last time before the 'improvements''. Not a lot to see, as people have said. The gardens used to be full of flowers and used to love walking round the paths on the outside. They were closed.

I really hope they don't ruin it. Too much concrete and not enough flowers and trees is my definition of ruin. I know they cost money to upkeep but we need somewhere to go and this was a beautiful place. I have no trust. They ruined the slab square. Visitors do not want 'entertaining' and concrete. We want authentic buildings restored faithfully and relaxing areas to picnic and enjoy the views. Simple.

User

Good views, grounds and history but bearing in mind the ‘castle’ is gone, poor value for money @ £20 for a family as a tourist; as a local, good value as you can come back as many times you want for a year, although not for he next year as it closes on 30/6 for a couple of years for a major revamp.

User

There was very little to see that related to Nottingham, the artefacts seemed to have very little connection to the castle or the area and in the art gallery apart from 2 Goose Fair pictures and a couple of others there seemed to be a real disconnect with the surroundings! I would have liked to have seen more about the history of the castle on display (we didn’t do the caves) and less reliance on the information books which had bits missing and didn’t give much info at all. There just seemed to be an over emphasis on colouring stations and children’s activities and not enough adult information!!

User

Found it really boring. £8 each rip off. The fact that the tunnels was an extra £5 each.not what we expected and wouldn't recommend it either

User

Thank God this place was free this week as if I had paid £8 each I would of asked for my money back!!!! So unkept. Everywhere was overgrown and untidy with dead plants everywhere. I understand it's closing but no excuse for the upkeep. Very disappointed.

User

My partner and I paid £16 altogether to visit the castle. Very disappointing. The gardens were ill maintained-the grass hadn't even been cut and the Castle itself was drab and uninviting. When you consider that the Natural History Museum is free, a trip to Nottingham Castle is overpriced and provides nothing in return. Don't bother going.
