"What's it like working with artists? Do you always understand their work?"

Free All welcome
Maxie Hayles' powerful autobiography launched at The House of Commons, during Britain's Black History Month last year, is a historical, sociological and political standpoint as he has not minced his words in letting it know that racism cannot be maintained as the status quo.
... 'Taking It To The Max' is a riveting, revealing and thought provoking autobiography about Jamaican born Maxie Hayles who has lived in Britain for the past 55 years. He is a Birmingham based human rights activist and community champion who has laid bare, warts-and-all his personal struggles alongside his fight for equality and justice for all human beings locally, nationally and internationally.
During this launch Maxie Hayles will be in conversation with the Osbourne family, who have been active in the struggle for social justice in Nottingham for many years, particularly in relation to racism and Stop and Search activities undertaken by police.

Our current exhibitions playfully experiment with architecture and the built environment.
As part of this season, we’re hosting an event with Samaneh Moafi, researcher at Forensic Architecture and other special guests to explore contemporary debates in architecture linked to both our shows.

Alberto Perera, Pia Camil’s collaborator, embodies an androgynous character named ‘They’ in a series of video work in our current exhibition. ‘They’ brings Camil’s ceramic and textile sculptures to life, like a ghostly apparition, confusing the lines between reality and fantasy.

Little marquettes can be found in our galleries, showing prototypes of Trix and Robert Haussmann’s work. Each of these tiny models is a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the iconic Swiss duo’s work.

‘States of America’ was a fantastic exhibition showcasing some of the greatest street photography in American history- Ive recently moved to the city and it’s refreshing to find a decent sized gallery free of charge. I will definitely be checking out everything else the Nottingham Contemporary have to offer, including the Iranian cinema timetable next season. Staff were very friendly and helpful too!

User

Wonderful space with extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. The Space downstairs is perfect for events and craft fayres, we have attended the cinema events which are excellent for a good night out.

User

Wonderful space . Great cafe and shop too!

Very friendly staff and a locker to keep your heavy bags in whilst enjoying the art.

User

Very handy location, just down the hill from the Lacemarket tram stop, the gallery has excellent facilities and expansive exhibition spaces. The only negative is that in some places the gallery lighting hasn't been very well designed, with excessive reflections off glass or shadows when viewing even from moderate distance. States of America is a world-class exhibition, and it is refreshing to see it in a provincial art space rather than having to travel to London to see it.

User

Spacious, helpful staff, great and diverse exhibitions and good coffee.

It's my favourite night out in Nottingham. The Hempolics & DJ Yoda were awesome. Also no drunken idiots like in the rest of town.

I loved From Ear to Ear to Eye yesterday. I lived in Cairo years ago, so a lot of memories.

Always a lovely and lively place to visit in Nottingham.

The artist walkthrough experience with Linder was very special.

User

A beautiful space with lots of interesting art exhibits. I particularly love browsing the craft shop and the kids workshops in the holidays are fantastic!

User

Our first visit. Children love art so felt a trip was beneficial. The play and learn area in the portfolio gallery in the basement was lots of fun in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We made the mistake of visiting one of the Chinese galleries on the top floor which had adult content, so was asked in a polite manner that perhaps better if we visit the basement kids enjoyed making a pretend movie afterwards

Linder's House of Fame. One of the better exhibitions I've seen here. Split into four distinct sections comprising photomontages, costumes, audio and video. Certainly enough to spend a good hour in here and probably a return visit to see again. One small criticism though. The tapestries in Gallery 4 weren't easily identifiable by their titles. Perhaps a printed diagram of the room or a numbering system would help. Apart from that though definitely worth a visit.

User

I took my wife on Saturday to the cafe bar to experience some live music .

Staff were excellent and fine choice of drinks felt sorry for people who arrived after us as there wasn't enough seating

User

Went to an event which was very badly organised. Other than the few people right at the front.... and the very tall!! .... it was impossible to see anything whatsoever going on on the stage. For this type of standing show, the stage needed to have been raised if anyone was going to stand any chance of a view. Waste of ticket money and I wouldn't go to a show there again unless this was addressed.

User

Organise an event that one has to register for, and be on the guest list to get in.

Hand out drinks vouchers at the door for the registered guests, and run out of drinks before you can get one?

It's a good job that this exhibition was better than the last couple of openings I've been to there :)

Room for improvement.

User

Handsome venue but the most uncomfortable wooden seats which are not suitable for a concert. I remember feeding back last year but it looks like the contemporary doesn't deem this important.

Disorganised ushering as well. Why did we have to have our names checked from a name list when everyone had tickets? It meant long queues to get in and even held up the performance.

User

Disappointed. I don't know what the "Artists" idea was. But I don't find that the "artists" idea was or is art at all!!! And certainly no celebration!!!Although I have been several times to the contemporay and find that the shop isn't what I would buy. The café is fine no problems.

User

Went here for a Christmas party and the food was terrible. They didn't have enough staff to serve the bar and bring out food so they closed the bar for nearly an hour!. The turkey was dry as a bone and food wasn't hot. Desert brownie was stale. Overall I think they should not do any form of catering as they clearly are not capable of providing any form of food service.
