About Nottingham Hockey Centre

Nottingham Hockey Centre is the leading hockey facility in England.

Nottingham Hockey Centre Description

Highfields Hockey Centre has been at the centre of hockey in the East Midlands for 35 years and has served the sport well since Jesse Boot bequeathed the site to the City and people of Nottingham 80 years ago. The quality of the new pitches and social facilities is extremely hard to match anywhere else in the country.

The vision to improve our Club began in 1996, to now appreciate the full splendour of our achievement is gratifying but must be viewed in the context of all the hard work of the many people who have contributed to our success.

Our partnership with the English Institute of Sport (EIS) has been essential and their generous support through the Sport England Lottery Fund has made the vision a reality. The assistance and backing from Nottingham City Council provided a solid foundation for the project and the basis of an excellent working relationship.

The past help and advice of our commercial partners at Tynemill Limited has been invaluable and we have now taken over the bar operation in order to secure the future for Highfields and the catering is franchised to Nottingham Events Company Limited.

Beeston Hockey Club, Nottingham Players Hockey Club, Nottingham Lacrosse Club and Beeston Centurions YFC joined forces in 2001 at the inception of this project. The affiliation of Hockey, lacrosse and football under the single ‘umbrella’ of Highfields Hockey Centre may seem unremarkable to the outsider but we are setting an emerging precedent in English club sport. The development of multi-sport facilities is well established in Europe but is a rarity in the UK.

Highfields Hockey Centre will continue to work co-operatively in order to provide facilities of the highest quality for all users of whatever sporting discipline. As part of the EIS Network we are very well placed to expand on this great new beginning. Highfields has recently become the East Midlands National Hockey Performance Centre.

Highfields Hockey Centre regularly host both national and international hockey events. In 2010 we hosted the FIH Womens Champions Trophy.

New Hockey Partnership puts Nottingham on the map!
A new exciting partnership between Nottingham Hockey Centre and The University of Nottingham will see a brand new £1M waterbase hockey pitch open at Nottingham Hockey Centre in February 2016.
The hockey centre, which is home to Beeston Hockey Club, already boasts one of the best hockey facilities in the country. The addition of a second waterbase pitch will put the city on the European map as one of the best hockey facilities... on the continent.
The new facility is a state of the art nylon AstroTurf pitch, identical to the other waterbase pitch at Nottingham Hockey Centre, which was relaid last summer.
Nottingham Hockey Centre Chairman, David Griffiths, commented, "The project has been a pipe dream for many years because we have always struggled to find the funding. This is fantastic news and we are extremely grateful to the University for their significant investment. Beeston Hockey Club and the University of Nottingham already have strong links and this new partnership will make these links even stronger. The new pitch will provide the University with access to one of the top hockey centres in Europe.
The City Council have always had a vision to create a 'Sportopolis' down University Boulevard and we have shared that vision for many years now. The wealth of quality sports facilities, which stretches down the road, must be envied by other big cities. We took our concept idea to develop a further world class waterbase pitch to the City Council in 2012, and then to the University of Nottingham. They have both been fully supportive since day one. The new project will be open for the community to use, will boost participation in the sport and will help the Hockey Centre attract major hockey events in to the City."
The Univeristy of Nottingham's Director of Sport, Dan Tilley, commented, "The University has a rich hockey heritage boasting a long line of Internationals such as George Pinner, Nick Catlin and Harry Martin, who are all vying for spots at the Rio Olympics, along with previous Olympians such as Anne Panter, Rob Moore, Robert Clift and John Land. The partnership with Nottingham Hockey Centre helps embed the existing strong links with the Centre, which were undoubtedly a factor in the Men’s side winning the British University (BUCS) National Championships last year. Having one of the best facilities in Europe will help maintain the University as one of the leading hockey institutions and with a joint scholarship package on offer with Beeston Hockey Club, this will no doubt help attract some of the best young players in the country to both the University and the Club."
The trust land at Highfields Park was bequeathed to the people of Nottingham for sport and recreation by Jesse Boot, founder of Boots. Nottingham City Council are now the sole trustee.

The resurfacing work carried out on Pitch 1 is now complete and opens today!
The project costing £200,000 was completed thanks to funding grants from England Hockey and the National Hockey Foundation, along with sinking fund donations and savings.
The old waterbase pitch, supplied by AstroTurf in 2001, was considered to be the best surface in the country. The Hockey Centre chose AstroGrass from AstroTurf once again as the supplier for the new pitch.
... The new pitch, like the old pitch, is made from nylon. Nylon pitches are considered the best playing surface by international players because nylon absorbs water, meaning that the pitch stays wet longer than a polyethylene artificial pitch. The fibre of the pitch is soft and the pitch ensures flat, fast and consistent ball movement with a natural bounce.
Other big European Clubs such as HC Rotterdam and Pinoké in the Netherlands, Royal Antwerp, KHC Dragons and HC Braxgata in Belgium and Canterbury HC in Kent have all chosen AstroTurf on their recent pitch refurbishments.
Beeston Men's 1st team coach, Matt Taylor, said "The new pitch is a fantastic addition to the facility. We now have one of the best surfaces in the country to play on. The pitch is very true and very fast which will suit our style of play. AstroTurf were the inventors of synthetic grass over 50 years ago and are the 'Rolls Royce' of hockey pitches."
Carl Whelan, Sales Manager-AstroTurf UK & Ireland, commented "We are delighted with our continued relationship with Nottingham Hockey Centre. The new AstroGrass surface was chosen as a result of 14 years excellent service from the old AstroTurf pitch. Hockey plays a major role in our business, being associated with Nottingham Hockey Centre will add to our impressive portfolio of top level hockey venues throughout Europe.
David Griffiths, Chairman of the Nottingham Hockey Centre said "As well as the new pitch at the Hockey Centre, 36 new car parking bays have been built giving the site over 200 hard standing car parking spaces. A new, higher fence has also been installed on the main pitch at the Boulevard end to protect the new tram system which opens shortly. There has been a lot of hard work going on behind scenes to make all this happen and I'm delighted the new pitch is now ready for the hockey community to use".
