If you’re at a loose end today then come and join us at The South Yorkshire Shooting Show at Doncaster racecourse. We’re on the The National Gamekeepers' Organisation stand and we’ve got our very popular NYMMO Shooting Socks and ShuttleSocks with us.

Wildlife on the moors!
It took a while and definitely no need for a slo-mo video but the moor road was crossed and the heather was reached....... eventually!

* LEST WE FORGET * PLEASE PLEASE SHARE for this very worthy cause
This year marks the centenary of the end of WW1 and to mark this a team of 5 Country Sports Enthusiasts will embark on the physically and emotionally tough challenge of the 100km #FrontlineWalk.
The walk will start from the Lochnagar Crater in La Boiselle, France, which was the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme and will finish at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium where there will be a ceremony of the Last P...ost.
Our fantastic 5 will be completing the 100km walk wearing appropriate country attire and will be raising funds for ABF Soldiers charity and awareness of country sports
Please visit the link below and make a donation, the top 3 fundraisers will also have the opportunity to lay a wreath at the end of the walk and it would be brilliant to think that our Country Sports team could do that.
So come on, dig deep and support our guys John Cavana, Chris Green, Shane Robinson, Tori Goodall and Richard Walton.

Great day out on the moors today.
Blue skies, a touch windy, but definitely better than being in the office!
Dog photos are just the best aren’t they? Do you ever see dogs on the moor that aren’t looking proud and happy.

Now that the #ShootingSeason is well underway, the #GameKeepers are keen to know what the Strongyle worm population is in the shot grouse.
Trichostrongylus tenuis (the Strongyle worm) is the biggest killer of grouse, so it's cycle and density needs to be carefully monitored. Grouse have a very interesting gut, different to other birds, with 2 extra sections of dead end gut called the caeca that lead back around the larger intestine, this is to drain extra nutrition from the...ir diet. This dead end gut can be taken from the shot birds, sliced up, washed out and then the worms can be counted. This can give us an estimate of the worm volume in the grouse.
The worm counts are obtained from grouse from various areas of the estate and depending on the results #GameKeepers will look to put out #MedicatedGrit at the end of the #ShootingSeason.
#MedicatedGrit is only available by licence and a vets certificate is required to purchase it. As the grouse that we shoot on the estates enter the food chain then medicated grit cannot be given now. Medicated grit has an agreed withdrawal period of 28 days so it will be put out in trays once the estates have finished shooting for the season.

Lets hope for better weather today!
Yesterday was particularly challenging as we were involved in a “spot the beater game”. I can say that quite jokingly now as everyone managed to come back with no one left missing in action.

A slightly less common bird to be seen on the moors is an Osprey, this one was seen outside a #GameKeepers garden this morning.
Seen in flight from underneath the osprey has white or slightly mottled underparts. The long wings are angled, bending at the 'wrist' which has a black patch contrasting with the white wing linings and at a distance it could be mistaken for a large gull.
This spectacular fish-eating bird of prey is an Amber List species because of its historical dec...line and low breeding numbers. They are listed as a Schedule 1 species on The Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Healthy, Nutritious, Ethical, Environmentally Friendly yes Grouse falls into this description.
NYMMO works to promote and encourage eating game through many outlets. We are now supplying restaurants, hotels, butchers and farm shops throughout the #NorthYorkMoors so keep your eyes peeled and you could enjoy some grouse for tea.

A #GameKeepers Job Description, who’d have thought that refuse and waste collector should be included.
This is the second tent of the year that this gamekeeper has picked up left on the moor.
The #NorthYorkMoors countryside is stunning and beautiful but who else but the #Gamekeepers will do the constant litter picking. It is only the minority I’m sure but the very people who come and visit the moors are the very people who are not taking care of it by littering it.
... Visit and enjoy, but PLEASE take your litter home with you.

After our post yesterday I received this really good piece of information through.
The first photo shows 2 gorgeous silver grouse that were shot on the #NorthYorkMoors in 1995. There were 4 of these Silver coloured grouse in the brood and 2 of the others were seen on a neighbouring moor the following week. It turns out that our Silver grouse from last week is in a similar area so could definitely be a descendant and this gives a real indication of how Grouse do move about from estate to estate.

Think this grouse stands out as being a bit different!
A very striking Silver looking grouse, this special bird is heading straight to the taxidermist.

Very important organisation a model for other moorland keepers in the uk and further afield

User

These dedicated keepers are the custodians of a precious and declining habitat rarer than the rain forests and the last refuge for breeding waders and many red listed species. Countering the misinformation fed to a gullible urban public is their biggest problem. Why would any right minded person want to see all this disappear to be replaced by a forest of spruce and wind turbines?

User

The NYMMO are actively showcasing the multitude of positive things that gamekeepers and their families do for the land and wildlife they manage, this is urgently needed. Keep up the great work. Jonathan

No nonsense common sense approach to habitat and wildlife conservation.

User

It's groups like this that educate the uninformed and help to boost everyone's understanding of the excellent work done on managed moorlands for the benefit of future generations, regardless of whether they shoot or not. Long may it continue!
