Blue was admitted earlier this year with pyrexia of unknown origin and lameness. A lameness investigation was performed revealing laminitis and X-rays showed some rotation of the pedal bone. Blue started a course of medication and styrofoam pads were applied to both front feet. After a period of rest, remedial farriery and a strict diet, he was discharged with a guarded prognosis. After 4 months of continued treatment Blue has made a full recovery. He is seen in the photo with his owner Lucie and OVH Equine vet Alex Knott.

As some of you may have read in the equine press, a drug called Flunixin which we use very commonly in the treatment of colic and other conditions was recently withdrawn for animal use by the VMD.
Thankfully after lobbying from BEVA and other groups this decision was reversed and access to this drug has been restored for use in non food producing horses.
Why does this concern me I hear you ask?... BEVA have reminded us that the horses food chain status must be checked before treatment. Please bear in mind that a) the passport should be available every time your horse is seen by a vet (this includes unpredicted out-of-hours emergencies) b) that you should have signed Section IX of your passport stating that your horse will not enter the food chain

Please join us in welcoming Marcus Head as a permanent addition to our veterinary team. Marcus has been working with us for the last few months to cover some training leave.
Marcus qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 1994 and spent a period in mixed practice before an internship at the Animal Health Trust Equine Clinical Unit. A second internship at The Royal Veterinary College was followed by a move to Rossdale & Partners in 1996, as an assistant dealing with horses in training. In 2004 he moved to the practice’s Diagnostic Centre seeing orthopaedic referrals from a wide variety of disciplines. His main areas of interest are diagnostic imaging (particularly ultrasonography), lameness and poor performance investigations.

Last night the stud team foaled the last mare of the season .... she produced a gorgeous bay filly by Jaguar Mail. The final tally for the season is 14 colts and 5 fillies. Foaling is one of the most enjoyable aspects of stud work but the team are definitely looking forward to some uninterrupted nights sleep!!

An official welcome for our new intern Jonny Ruiz who started his year long internship last week.

During his time at University Jonny played hockey at international level and he is hoping to be able to continue this passion during his internship along with his many other sporting interests.

The latest addition during our ongoing redevelopment are new facilities for isolation. This area houses our sickest patients with potentially infectious diseases and as such must be kept completely separate from our healthy inpatients that are in for routine procedures. Strict protocols are in place for handling and treating these patients and the new isolation area will help us facilitate this.

On call team for this weekend vet Alex Knott, intern George Worden, nurse Melissa Healey and surgeon Neal Ashton.

So after Magnus being kicked and being taken to Oakham vets he is now home, we can’t thank the Oakham team enough for such high service and amazing treatment. We arrived with a very lame horse with an unknown problem but after being there 3 hours he had, had an ultra sound and X-Ray meaning we knew what the problem was, we were kept informed of every part of the procedures and were very looked after by the surgeon and nurse Jess. He had top treatment whilst there and did not want to come home after his 3 days there, he arrived looking a very dirty looking Grey and arrived home shining, Thankyou very much to all at Oakham team but especially Jess for having the time to bath him and also taking so much care of Magnus!!

User

Over the last few months my old horse has been poorly and oakham vets have been amazing in helping me understand what was best and they really make you feel that they are on the journey with you. Highly recommend them.

User

Our horse had a huge operation 2 years ago. Could not fault the care and consideration we received. Would not go anywhere else thanks to Ben, Alex, James and all the wonderful staff. You may not remember kanga as you see so many horses but we'll never forget that you gave him a useful life. Thank you you are truly wonderful xx

User

On a recent emergency visit with our pony Sam. we were made to feel very at ease, all the medics and equestrian staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

We were given as much time as we needed to spend with our pony as we said goodbye. Everything was made to feel so friendly and relaxing.

I can't thank them enough for all their help and advise at such a hard time.

User

Oakham recently had my horse Burt in for a week and they were brilliant! Morning updates on how she was and they made an extra effort to keep her happy by turning her out in the field. She is now home and improving daily and is full of beans and heading in the right direction. Can’t thank all the vets and nurses that dealt with her but especially Lilly and Adam who didn’t mind my endless questions!

User

My pony Prada was in oakham vets over 3 weeks and I can honestly not fault them. I had regular phone calls updating me on her progress every day which was nice. They are a friendly bunch and really explain everything. My 5 year old is now full of beans the way she should be! Thankyou xx

User

My horse was referred to Oakham for an arthroscopy, all I can say is how impressed I am with the care they provided for her. They rang me everyday to let me know how she was doing. Rafa was great and took his time diagnosing the problem, I feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The day I went to pick Angel up, Jess had kindly given her a bath (typical grey horse!) thank you so much! Highly recommended! xx

User

My dear little 16yr old chestnut went down with impaction colic on 23rd December. He hadn't eaten or drunk anything for 2 days and when he didn't respond to treatment at home he was admitted to Oakham for 4 days. Everyone at Oakham was fantastic and despite being without him over Christmas I didn't have to worry about him as I knew he was getting top notch care. He is now home and so much happier and brighter than he was. He is my happy, alert, lively little best mate again and I cannot thank Oakham enough!!! Especially Melissa and Dan who were there over the Christmas period to care for him. Somebody once said to me "if you ever need someone to fight for your horse's life and save them, it's Oakham". Oh how right they were :-) Worth every penny!!! Beau was a bit of a nightmare in the horsebox on the way in, but as soon as we arrived Melissa and Dan took over and within 15 mins he'd had another round of treatment and was made comfy in a stable. They managed his diet and got him back up to a full diet before I picked him up which was great as I could then get him straight back into his usual routine as soon as he got home. I would trust nobody else to take such great care of my best buddy.

User

My boy came in Mr Jefferson with severe colitis and c diff. I really did not think I would be taking him home. The whole team worked magic to save his life and I am forever in debt to this amazing place. I can not put in to words the feelings right now after just putting my boy back into his own stable. Above and beyond does not even scratch the surface. Thank you from Myself and Jefferson

User

I would highly recommend Oakham Equine Vets. William Bevin was great, very professional, at a sad time. Within 30 minutes of calling Oakham William was here. He diagnosed our old boy who was 26 with heart failure. Sadly he was put to sleep this morning.

I have collected my ageing hunter today following a removal of a growth. From the point of being referred to Oakham by my local vet, I can only give maximum praise for the level of service and the openness and communication from all the staff in looking after Basil. Fortunately he has come home cured. I can't praise the level of service highly enough and all done in a friendly and very professional manner. I wouldn't go anywhere else in future - fantastic. I think Basil thought so too, he was reluctant to leave the 5 star service when I went to collect him! Thanks everybody, you are a shining example to all equine hospitals and to the profession at large

User

I cannot thank the vets and all the nursing staff at Oakham enough. I was devestated when my Tb went down with impaction colic and feared the worst. After 4 very long days of their love, care and dedication, Irish returned home today. They even loaded him, something i have never been able to do with him unsedated.

I wouldnt hesitate to call them at any animal time of need.....Thanks guys : )

User

Big thank you to all the team for helping Blue, he was there in total for 2 weeks due to lami and an infection. Although still recovering and by no means back to normal he’s on his way and it wouldn’t have been possible without Oakhams help. Special thanks to Alex, Jess, Connie and Lousia for looking after Blue so well.. beyond helpful and nothing was ever too much hopefully he’s on the up from here.. and won’t be back except to have his snazzy shoes put on!

User

Amazing! They have been so understanding how nervous I was when my top horse needed an unexpected stifle operation. Neal is incredibly knowledgable, and wouldn’t have my horses (babies) go anywhere else! Thank you so much.
