Pictured here is one of the biggest reasons that we advise people to spay their female dogs and cats.
This is a PYOMETRA, or pus-filled uterus, which was removed from a very poorly dog. In an entire female, the hormone cycle associated with seasons can predispose to a serious infection of the uterus. This can make the animal extremely unwell and, if left untreated, can be life threatening.
If you do not plan to breed from your pet, having her spayed while she is otherwise... fit and healthy is the best way to prevent this condition from occurring. Spaying can also reduce the risk of your pet developing certain types of cancer.

Tori is in the process of completing a postgraduate certificate in small animal ophthalmology. The two-year course involves intensive extra training in the medical and surgical management of different eye conditions.
