Queen’s Sconce - A 17th century Civil War earthwork fortification

The Scheduled Ancient Monument is one of the country's finest remaining earthworks from the English Civil War (1642-51). It is distinctively star-shaped when viewed from the air and is one of nine siege works remaining in a recognisable state in and around Newark. It’s considered an internationally important heritage feature, and is surrounded by open space and playing fields.

Rumbles Cafe

The cafe is run by Rumbles Catering Project, which provides education and training for people with learning difficulties.

There has been speculation that Sconce and Devon Park has been the source of the canine parvovirus which can be fatal to dogs. The district council has sought veterinary advice which clearly sets out that it is impossible to isolate any particular piece of land or park as being the source of this type of infection. We would therefore emphasise that there is no greater risk to dogs being exercised in Sconce and Devon Park than there is them being walked anywhere else in the di...strict. Parvovirus spreads via infected poo, is very contagious, and can survive in the environment for more than a year. A dog can catch it anywhere they come into contact with the virus. For example, through contact with an infected dog, infected poo or contaminated items such as collars, leads, floors, food and water bowls, shoes, clothes or hands. We would reiterate the need for dog owners to act responsibly in dealing with their pet's waste. If anyone has any cause for concern regarding any symptoms that their dog may be displaying, such as lethargy, bloody discharges or diarrhea, they should seek expert veterinary advice as soon as possible. Regular vaccination is the best way to prevent your dog from getting parvovirus. Adult dogs need boosters regularly throughout their life – speak to your vet for more information about vaccinations.

Holy Trinity Catholic Academy School, Reach Learning Disability Support and Newark 6th and 7th Cubs recently helped design and plant new perennial flowers in the four triangle beds outside the cafe. They planted various low growing perennials that will help benefit pollinating insects as well adding attractive colour across the summer months.
