It's that time of year again, where we are building up to what promises to be an awesome August Bank Holiday weekend... The bouncy castle is on order, Smokey Joe has received its new springs, the ex-Longleat coach is having the last coats of its fab new livery, the boat pond has had new mooring pontoons and navigation buoys added, the Sherwood Forest Railway Railway is up and running, the roundabout is now fully operational and the kiosk is gearing up to provide all the hot ...and cold refreshments you could ever wish for.
Phew! We have all been super busy getting ready for you all, so if you are fed up with car park charges, entrance fees and over the odds prices for a nice cup of coffee, why not pop in to see us for an hour whilst on your journey for a fabulous train ride that costs just £2 per person....
See you all soon 😉

Ally, the 'gator is enjoying the cooler weather we have today, but is looking forward to the rest of the week which has promised some slightly warm times... See you all soon;)

You can tell it's the first weekend of the school holidays by the typical liquid sunshine the UK is so famous for... But don't panic! We are perfectly prepared for all weather eventualities with ice creams stocked (even vegan and gluten free 😃 ), cold drinks and delicious hot drinks (including our tasty hot chocolate topped with cream, marshmallows, sprinkles AND a flake) ready to take the edge off the heat/chill and plenty of sandwiches, cake and pot noodles to snack on whilst the kids enjoy the play areas. Open every day with the first train leaving at 11am, the budget busting fare of just two pound per person makes us one of the best places to kill a couple of hours no matter whatever the weather! See you all soon! ;)

User

A great turn out today with the Nottinghamshire Classic Car Rally, organised by the excellent Carlton and District Motor Club. Thanks to all those who came, hope you enjoyed yourselves and I'm sure we will see you all soon ;)

User

To celebrate the official start of the schools summer holidays, we thought we would try a bit of double heading...! See you all soon ;)

User

Smokey Joe returns on Monday from its holiday beside the sea and should be in use of the next week, culminating in the classic car rally which joins us next Sunday. See you soon 😉

User

We've been having far too much fun! We really can't wait to see her back in use again... :)

User

Today was quite monumental... Smokey Joe has made its first trip into the top station to say hi to Pet and all our lovely customers that were around this afternoon! This is a test steaming prior to its official inspection this coming week but we very much look forward to welcoming it back onto the roster in the very near future :D

User

Despite the Double Caramel Magnum winning the vote, the Double Raspberry Magnum came a close second so never wanting to let anyone down we have had an even closer jiggle of the freezer and actually managed to get them both in! And they are going down a treat in this hot weather! 🤣

User

The the sun is out and the parasols are open over the benches, the drinks are cold and Dana and Ellie are enjoying seeing your happy faces... The girls in the kiosk have been busy this past week, selling loads of ice-cream. But they have had a lot of people ask for other flavours of Magnum other than the classic and white, so in order to respond to the demands we need your help! We only have to for one flavour, so it's up to you to decide! Will it be the rich and decadent double caramel, or the luxuriously fruity double raspberry...? Votes are open until Friday, the ice-cream will be available from Sunday!

We are now ramping up to the main school holiday period where we look forward to welcoming back into regular service the stalwart of the railway, Smokey Joe but if you are planning a visit in the next couple of week please bear in mind that the motox track next door has a large meet next weekend and the weekend after that there is a one day electronic music event in the field on the Saturday 7th July. We will of course be running as normal but please take extra care on the road leading to the lane as it will be a little busier than normal ;)

User

One of the latest bits to receive attention from Smokey Joe are the inside cranks to the Bagnal-Price valve gear that Keith fabricated from three separate components. Held together with set screws and good fits, over the past quarter of a century wear and tear has taken its toll. Not to worry though, it will soon be fixed and we look forward to welcoming the flagship loco back into service soon!

Fathers day is just around the corner, so if you are struggling for the ideal gift why not consider one of our steam driver taster experiences, available from https://www.redletterdays.co.uk/…/a-ste am-train-driving-tas… ... With expert tuition, you'll soon have the father figure in your life storming our impressive gradients!

User

The flying saucer has landed... Watch out for it entering the play area in the near future :D

User

The keen eyed amongst you may have spotted the funny looking spiral tubes dotted around Welldale this past week... We recently received one of the woodland trust's tree packages and have managed to find a home for all thirty saplings. We have silver birch, Rowan and wild cherry all doing well and we look forward to watching them grow along with the railway in the years to come... See you all soon 😉

User

With not a cloud in the sky, Pet pulls into the station with the two exBushmill coaches and the ex longleat too... We really can't wait until the third exBushmill joins in on the action, hopefully by the summer ;)

User

We had an incredible gift this week of approx. 30 garden ornaments. Some could do with a lick of paint but we thought we would put them out and about for everyone to enjoy before being given a spruce up this coming winter. If you have any orphaned gnomes, unloved hedgehogs riding in cars or unwanted watermills with a slightly wonky wheels please feel free to bring them along and give them a second chance at the railway ;)

User

User

What a little gem! We had a amazimg day today! Our 3 and 1 year old boys loved the train ride and the playground was just what they needed.

Fab little picnic spot too will be getting off the train next time to explore more!

User

What a hidden gem! Visited today with my two year old son and despite it being a wet and cold day we had a lovely time. The train ride is so sweet with little characters along the way to look out for. The play park, albeit a little dated, was still lots of fun and kept us entertained! Thank you for a lovely afternoon out. We will definitely visit again!

User

What a fantastic hidden gem my boys love it here, safe secure area for my 2 year old and bigger places to play for my 5 year old. They love the steam train! Great to bring a picnic along and watch the children play! The toilets are always clean, friendly staff and a great cuppa

User

Went there for second time yesterday. Lovely little ride. On first occassion on the return ride with engine first the driver stopped quite properly to remove an obstruction from the track. A plastic tortoise! Yesterday the trip back had the engine at the rear with 1 coach infront. Makes it very light. Driver wouldn't have had as much view if obstruction. Spent 34 years on railways so not a novice. Anyway nice friendly staff. Lovely views.

User

We visited this month for my 3yr old sons birthday! The staff were incredibly kind! They really took the time to chat to my little lad and he even got the try on the train drivers hat and pull the whistle! They really made his birthday so special! A fantastic experience & brilliant price

User

We came yesterday after reading reviews and thinking we would probably spend an hour at the most.. We ended up staying nearly 5 hours! We absolutely loved it. My kids are 3,5 and 9 and all were equally as happy to play round the gardens for most of this time. The sun was out which helped as we were able to sit and watch them play without being cold, and sit and enjoy our picnic. They loved the train and all the information that came with it. Lovely little place and we will definitely be back x

User

Really friendly staff and well worth the money (£2 for a ride on the steam train). Was lovely to all drink hot chocolate and watch the sun setting. Will definitely be back.

User

Me and my kids love it here great price to ride on the steam train and the kids also like the zip wire and the climbing frames

User

Lovely place for a picnic kids can play, very well kept, free parking and entry.

User

I was brought the train driving experience as a Christmas present. Went there today and had a fantastic time. Thank you Dave and everyone there. I would recommend this experience to anyone whether you are into trains or not.

Once again thank you Dave and team - Stephen & Sally

User

I did a train driver experience here and it was great , there is plenty more for kids to do here parks and a small cafe in great surroundings, highly recommended

User

Great place to go and relax while the kids play without having to spend a lot. Enjoyed the train ride too!

User

Came to the railway for a steam driving experience course and loved every single minute of it. Everyone was really nice and welcoming, David instructed me wonderfully patiently and the joy of driving up and down the line was superb! The only problem was that it was too short - I could have gone on all day!

User

Brilliant time here, with my 2 year old. Great value for money and the park is fab for little ones.

I will definitely be returning

User

Brilliant afternoon for the kids. Loved the ride and got to blow the whistle. Worth every penny.

User

Attended the railway with my husband yesterday, who had an experience to drive the train. Absolutely amazing time. Bob and the team were fantastic

User

Visited here at the weekend taking our 2 year old daughter with some friends. We all really enjoyed the train ride,it was a lovely experience for her first ride at only £2 each for 15 mins! Had little gnome displays to view on the way round.

Was very pleasantly surprised by the lovely play area we discovered after and a zip line which kept the men entertained too!

Lovely family day out at little cost!

User

Lovely little place , slides , lots of little vehicles, zip lines, climbing frames and drinks /snack/icecream bar , what's not to like and only a couple of pounds on the train brilliant for a little outside fun
