Grimsby 10k today, what a fantastic well run event, big thanks to Tape 2 Tape, Neil and Nicola. Now if you thought Grimsby 10k was flat, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Dec 2nd starting in Butlins, no hills (except speed bumps). Entries open now www.skegness10k.com

That moment in the afternoon when your brain says enough beer, and the body says but I’m thirsty ............ Won’t be a problem I think on Dec 2nd. Haven’t got a clue how many have entered and how many spaces we have left .... to many beers 🍺

User

Ramblings of a slightly sozzled and sizzled race director. The risk assessment has been done, road closure applied for so should be entirely traffic free, St. John’s ambulance have confirmed they are ok for the 2nd Dec, I’ve had several beers by the pool (entirely irrelevant I know, but it’s true hence the sizzled and sozzled comment earlier) entries are filling up nicely. Website has been renewed for another year so you can follow the link in there www.skegness10k.com to enter......

Flat 10k race mostly traffic free environment. Best course for a PB

Who did the sting in the tail last Sunday? Great race, well organised, well marshalled, but those hills... just cruel and in that heat. Pleased to let you know that you won’t have to worry about the heat or hills on Dec 2nd. Enter now as filling up nicely https://www.stuweb.co.uk/basket.php

User

This will be just as important in December as it is during this hot spell
Drink before you're thirsty! Dehydration and its effects on performance
... Athletes can sweat out 6% to 10% of their body weight during competition. And thirst is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. If you wait to drink until you are thirsty and stop drinking when your thirst is satisfied, you’ll remain 25% to 50% dehydrated
Losses in excess of 5% of body weight can decrease the capacity for work by about 30%
Fluid loss equivalent to 2% of body mass can decrease the capacity for work of around 3% at shorter distance events, 5% at longer runs and rides
time to exhaustion for power or sprint based exercise is reduced by as much as 45% by prior dehydration corresponding to a loss of only 2.5% of body weight
Even in cool laboratory conditions, maximal aerobic power (VO2max) decreases by about 5% when persons experience fluid losses equivalent to 3% of body mass or more
The main reasons dehydration has an adverse effect on exercise performance can be summarised as follows:
• Reduction in blood volume • Decreased skin blood flow • Decreased sweat rate • Decreased heat dissipation • Increased core temperature • Increased rate of muscle glycogen use
Even for normally hydrated individuals, climatic heat stress alone decreases VO2max by about 7%. Thus, both environmental heat stress and dehydration can act independently to limit cardiac output and blood delivery to the active muscles during high intensity exercise.
Dehydration also impairs the body’s ability to lose heat. As core temperature rises towards about 39.5° C (103° F), sensations of fatigue ensue. This critical temperature is reached more quickly in the dehydrated state.
A person’s ability to tolerate heat strain appears to be impaired when dehydrated, so the critical temperature for experiencing central fatigue is likely to be slightly lower when dehydrated by more than about 5% of body mass
Before a workout or competition Drink 1 to 2 cups of fluid an hour before starting One cup 15 to 30-minute prior 5 [142 ml] to 10 ounces [285] of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes of activity. Adjust these amounts to the weather and how much you sweat.
Post Session or Race You’ll need to drink 16 ounces [455 ml – [one small bottle almost] of fluid for every pound | ½ KG approx. that you’ve lost, just to get back to your starting point
