Visited this pub this evening as it's our closest Chef & Brewer. Being a vegetarian, I'm always sceptical about burgers but I had the BEST veggie burger ever & the cookie desert was amazing! The staff were very friendly especially Victoria & the chap behind the bar. Thank-you all for a lovely meal, we will be back

User

Thank you to all the staff at the Spencer Arms today. 10 of us had a lovely meal in a relaxed atmosphere for my daughters 18th birthday, the food was delicious and the service was excellent, thank you x

Just been here for lunch and it was amazing! As a vegan I was surprised at the wide range of options, there was even a vegan chocolate torte which was to die for! Thank you so much a lovely experience!

First time to Spencer arms had heard mixed reviews. Went for mothers day which was fairly busy but food arrived in good time. Starter of pate was just enough before the main event the roast. Best roast I've ever eaten at a restaurant as there is nothing like your mum's but this was a proper treat. Was so stuffed none of our party of 4 had room for the delicious sounding puddings on offer.

User

Cosy, quintessentially English pub / restaurant, with an upmarket, modern twist. The cosy style and ambience made for an enjoyable social gathering. Great choice on the menu, with old favourites, and a broad selection to appeal to all tastes. Quality food, beautifully presented with care and passion. Our dedicated waitress (Becky) showed all the skills and commitment that makes dining out that extra bit special. Becky was attentive, knowledgeable about the dishes and drinks on offer, and made us all feel important and welcome with her humour and meeting our needs. The team did not charge for a meal for one of our party of ten, when it was realised that this choice could not be provided, and an alternative has to be suggested. This is slick, excellent customer service, which encourages patrons to return to this establishment. Prices are not unrealistic, and should be viewed as competitive for such good food and service. A very enjoyable night had by all.

We went for New Years eve. The pub itself is very nice and clean. The staff very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was cold with no heating on. My dinner was not very warm and mine and my sister in law roast potatoes were all burnt and rock hard. My dinner was suppose to be served with seasonal veg but they never arrived. However my husband and brother enjoyed their meals. The puddings and starters were very nice. They had a live band playing which was a nice touch for New Years Eve and we saw the new year in dancing. All in all a very enjoyable evening and we would certainly go again.

User

Typical ex chef and brewer pub with a good value lunch menu (main and dessert for less than a tenner) Food was good, service was excellent.

User

Been here a few times now. Food has always been lovely and the service of late has been excellent. We very rarely book as often it’s a spur of the moment decision. Always accommodating and a warm welcome. Wish we were nearer so we could stay for the evening and have a few drinks as well

User

We've always loved the Spencer Arms, but I'm afraid yesterday's experience has put us off going again any time soon. We had family staying and thought it would be a nice place to take them for lunch. We'd booked a table for 6 for 2pm. When we got there just before 2pm we were told our booking had been changed to 2.30. We hadn't changed the booking. We were seated at a table for 9 and asked if there were still 9 of us. I said no, there had never been 9 of us. Turns out our original booking had been cancelled & we'd been mixed up with another group. Good job we asked to move tables before the other group arrived.

We waited half an hour for our drinks to come and when they came, the order wasn't right. We then had to ask for someone to come and take our food order as we'd been waiting for so long. The lady behind the bar said that they were very busy and didn't have many restaurant staff on. It didn't look very busy to me at that point.

One of our group is allergic to broccoli and asked that no broccoli be included in her veg. When the food came, the veg had obviously been cooked all together and there were bits of broccoli all over it - the florets had just been picked out. When she explained this to the waiter he just smiled at her, as if he were embarrassed and didn't know what to do.

We ordered desserts and waited 25 minutes, at which point the waiter came and told us that they'd run out of two of the desserts we'd ordered. Approximately 10 minutes later the alternatives arrived. These were taken off the bill, but that wasn't really the point. We should have been told at the point of ordering, and they shouldn't have taken 35 minutes to come!

Whilst we were waiting for our main courses, one of the waiters tried to give us someone else's food order - it just seemed like no-one really knew what was going on & there wasn't anyone in charge.

The staff were very nice and quite apologetic, but they just didn't seem to have a handle on things at all.

It's a real shame because the Spencer Arms has always been lovely, but we won't be going there again and we certainly won't be taking guests. It's embarrassing when you tell people how good somewhere is and then you don't have a good experience. One mistake is forgivable - we're all human - but this was just one thing after another.

You need to sort things out!

We brought my Nan down for her 91st birthday table was at 6.30. We’ve been before and the food was great but this time it wasn’t. Nan had the chicken cheese chefs choice, chicken was tough, dad had Gluten free steak which was tough. Mum had steak which was over cooked and tough and the triple cooked Chips were NOT triple cooked they were cheap basic chips which had we have been told we would have swapped to something else. I had the beef and pulled pork chef choice which was nice. We had No check backs to see how the food was so were generally disappointed. Brampton halt is much more consistent. Edited to say I messaged them the day after to receive NO reply and yes they have seen it

User

We booked a table for 15 of us yesterday and travelled purposely from Leicester for my mum and dads 35th wedding anniversary. Lovely setting and service was quick however I think this is the reason for the problem. The starter was suburb quickly arrived and very tasty however the main course was like it was from a different establishment. Most of the meals where cold and when I mean cold any colder and there would have been icicles. My brother in law asked for his stake 'rare' well if it had if been anymore well done it would have snapped. This was part of an amazing day to celebrate my mum and dads wedding anniversary and to be honest we could have saved ourselves the drive from Leicester and had a better meal in a bog standard 2 for £10. This was a recommendation and to be honest we feel sad and upset at how poor the meal was. Maybe the sign up advertising for a chef should have been a clue !!

User

Service was a bit slow my dinner was warm and not hot. I am bit disappointed

User

I've always liked this place, but so disappointed today. We were told it would be a 30 minute wait for food... even though there were only 5 tables occupied. But we accepted this and placed our order.... 45 minutes later our mains turned up which would have been great but we'd not had our starters.... the waiter had forgotten to order them..... I asked why he didn't write it down but he replied he 'normally' remembered.... obviously not this time!!!! Food was mediocre, my medium rare steak was actually well done.... won't be rushing back....

User

Family of 23 booked way in advance with menu choices booked prior to the date booked. What a disaster! All of the roast turkey lunches were luke warm. Roast potatoes were far from crispy. Gravy was watery with no taste. Roast beef lunches dire too. Roast beef was tough. My mum took hers home for her dogs. Children's meals were served 20 minutes after the adult meals. 3 adult meals were also served 20 minutes after the roast lunches. One child meal was actually the wrong meal. It was an adult meal. For the price paid and considering it was pre booked we were all very disappointed. The saving grace was the lovely time we had catching up as a family .

User

Although staff were pleasant the availability of food and drink, combined with the poor quality of food has resulted in us not returning to the spencer arms.

Arrived...place was empty!! Which I found shocking despite it being a Tuesday there was all bar 3 people in, didn't ask for booking name just seated us (so many spaces).

Was told upon ordering, that 3 dishes were unavailable and the grill wasn't working so no steaks....order a dish and parsnips were unediable...

I ordered rhubarb gin...not available...had 2 elderflower gins......then unavailable...had another gin...no gin glasses left....probably because you hadn't cleared our table that was full of glasses...friend ordered Peroni...got a fosters!

And to top it off...no loo roll in the ladies!! Always a joy!!!

I must hurry back there again and spend another £200!!!!!!!!!

User

Very disappointing to wait an hour and a half for 2 meal's this pm. When querying on the wait we were told that there had been a mix up in the kitchen. Really not good enough. No offer to give a free drink of which we had had x 2 of during our wait. Certainly will not recommend or re visit.

User

Service appalling. WAited nearly 40 mins for starters, (not busy) and then my starter was cold, which had to be sent back. Then waited over 30 minutes and no mains, so decided to leave!

Not my best experience there and have now cancelled Christmas Eve dinner there. If they can’t get it right when it’s quiet, what’s it going to be like on a busy night!

User

I am soooo disappointed with the Sunday lunch main course we've just had. We booked a table a few days earlier for 12 o'clock (all they could offer us... even though the place was half empty), so they certainly weren't busy.

We took some friends because we have visited the Spencer's Arms many times and always had a super meal. However, today the meal was dire.

I ordered the shoulder of lamb that was okay, but nothing to rave about... but everything else on the plate was very poor indeed. The Yorkshire Pudding was soggy (obviously been sat around keeping warm) the roast potatoes were basically inedible (no one ate them... awful taste) and not even a sign of crispness!! (We were told they had been cooked in oil and yet the menu said duck fat!!). I ordered an additional side of cauliflower cheese in a sauce.... which had the consistency of water and the pigs in blanks were clearly not freshly cooked either.

All in all I do wonder if they have a different chef and I really don't think we will be returning there again.

They did offer us free coffee's, but to be honest, we weren't after anything free, just an enjoyable meal. I wasn't impressed when they said that they had asked another table if everything was okay and they'd not complained!!! That has nothing to do with it.... we were disappointed with our meal !!

Their saving grace was the desserts (probably prepared the day before) three of us had the summer pudding and another one had to millionaire shortbread tart. I'd give the puds a 9/10.

Very disappointing. The one star is for the main course and not the puddings.
