About The Association For Psychological Therapies - Apt

Accredited training in Mental Health and related areas. Over 100, 000 professionals have attend APT courses.

The Association For Psychological Therapies - Apt Description

APT provides over 10, 000 participant-days training per annum, mainly to the UK National Health and Social Services. Employing over 100 highly experienced clinical and educational psychologists on a consultancy basis our area of expertise is predominantly in mental health and related fields.

We pride ourselves on providing the most interesting, exciting, relevant and applicable training, on courses ranging from 1 to 12 days. Our specialist areas are:

• Adult Mental Health
• Children and Adolescents
• Older People
• Learning Disability
• Brain Injury
• Forensic
• Substance Misuse

The training is provided predominantly 'OnSite', meaning we come to you. You provide the teaching room, participants and any refreshments, we provide everything else. That way you train a 'critical mass' of staff in a given subject so they can support each other subsequently. Timings can be arranged to fit in with staff availability, so a three-day course may run from Tuesday to Thursday or, say, three consecutive Wednesdays.

Professions attending our courses include: psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, in that order.

The way we maintain quality is by spending a lot of time developing and maintaining the course content, and then recruiting talented professionals to deliver it. In turn they feed in to the development process which results in continuously maintained quality. We check this my obtaining feedback on the two key scales of relevance and presentation-quality from every attender. Moreover we write to attenders a few months after the training to check on its usefulness.

This is a course for people who have at least 6 months practice subsequent to the Essentials course or similar (often much more), and have passed APT's online exam to obtain APT’s Level 2 accreditation. In lectures, the masterclass provides more depth on some of the topics in the Essentials course but is mainly focused on developing skill, based around the following components: listening to and making case presentations, watching video demos by others, role-play/real-play whe...re you interview others and they interview you, and establishing a stable system for support and development for yourself in this area post course. The result is that you enhance your skill and technique, not just your knowledge. Successful completion also gains you APT's Level 3 accreditation in the subject.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) adopts a new strategy that moves away from the 'rational strategies of behaviour and thought change' that many people have tried and failed with. Focusing mainly on how people understand and perpetuate their difficulties through language, ACT concentrates on exciting interventions based on metaphor and paradox, with experiential exercises to show how to break free of language traps, overcome common behavioural problems and enhance life ...satisfaction.

This 3-day course meets demands for a thorough, consistent and values-led approach to Positive Behaviour Support.
The course covers the background and rationale for PBS and then looks at understanding an individual’s needs, analysing their behaviour and understanding the role it fulfils. Positive and proactive, the training will empower delegates to develop individual PBS plans aimed at improving their clients’ environment and wellbeing, thus decreasing the likelihood of dist...urbed behaviour. Using skills and understanding from the course delegates will be able to develop specific client-centred plans, also considering their situation and family / carers.
Given that some incidents will inevitably still occur the course also covers steps to manage a crisis and to continually review and improve the plan. This is a powerful approach that improves the environment and wellbeing of both clients and staff. This is the only PBS course that is APT accredited and gives access to relevant web-based APT resources after the course.
