About The Bushel And Strike

Stunning pub in a beautiful village offering coal cooked food and great ales, lagers & wine.

The Bushel And Strike Description

The Bushel and Strike, country pub and eating house was originally built in 1854 as a brewery in the picturesque village of Ashwell, North Hertfordshire. A few years down the line and the 'Bushel' as it is affectionately known locally is a heaven for those seeking great food, well-kept cask ales, fine wines and a genuine warm welcome.

Today is the day we say goodnight to an absolute legend, all these celebrity chefs that you celebrate on tv and flock to their restaurants should spare a thought as this man had an influence on everyone of them and if not then definitely to the mentor that taught them. Holder of most michelin stars, an absolute god and gent. RIP chef @joel.robuchon #legend #culinarygod

after 4 months of daily research to see which dishes were received well we have finalised hopefully a menu to suit the majority ( we can't do anything within reason to please the few that don't like what we do... but we try )
so we have kept a pub menu to appeal to the big eaters who come for pub food and we have created a bbq small plates menu which was our initial plan to keep with the seasons, keep us being creative and enables us to use nicer ingredients
we hope you enjoy it as much as we do

Would like to say a massive Thankyou to Phillippa and the team for helping me pull off my partners surprise birthday meal!

The food was outstanding and the service was great. We had a table of 25 guests and nothing was to much for the girls that evening. All 25 of our guests complimented the food and restaurant. It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the outside play area is a hit with our little ones.

We will definitely be returning to try the Sunday roast!

User

What a beautiful pub! This was our first visit and we were not disappointed. The restaurant was packed and vibrant and our table of 12 were attended too for all needs by happy knowledgeable staff. The owner was front of house and made all efforts to speak to everyone and ask if we needed anything throughout our meal, including regular water top ups. The roast dinner was super yummy and we were not disappointed. I need your gravy recipe please! We had a walk to the local springs after to walk dinner off, we will definitely be returning. Thank you for having us! Was well worth the drive over! We highly recommend! My only suggestion would be not to eat breakfast before you go so you can eat more crispy homemade roast potatoes!

User

We had an amazing meal on Mother’s Day...my favourite dish was the roast sharing platter ❤️ I would highly recommend this pub 😊

User

We arrived and a nice welcome from a smiling member of staff .Good range of beers and drinks we then made our way to the restaurant.

The lamb scotch eggs are amazing bbq ribs and the lady’s loved the popcorn cauliflower.

We all had burgers 2 beef and 2 chicken beautiful breast of chicken with sides spot on keep up the good work all ready book to return

User

Traditional village pub with a welcoming atmosphere that has been tastefully decorated. The staff are friendly, professional and keen to please. The food has amazing flavour and the portion sizes are generous. I had the scallops to start which were perfectly cooked and perfectly complimented by the shallot purée and white pudding. The sharing roast is a great concept, especially the trio of meat which means you get to try everything! The flavour these guys achieve from using the big green eggs is unreal and I’d go as far as saying that it was one of the best Sunday lunches I’ve ever had! My only criticism is that it’s to cheap! I’d happily pay a little bit more for the quality of food these guys are producing 😬

A Sunday afternoon well spent

User

So we came in for a Sunday Roast and we weren’t disappointed! The atmosphere of the pub is friendly, welcoming & clean. I started with the Goats Cheese, Beetroot and Walnut Salad it was beautifully fresh, with two types of beetroot and very tasty. My husband had the Pulled Lamb Scotch Egg again was very happy with his choice. Being the slightly fussy vegetarian that I am, I was thrilled that without complaint they accommodated my slight menu alteration, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My husbands roast a Trio of Meats was fit for a King (lovely rare beef, pork & chicken bought from Trussells so even better all free range!), perfectly cooked meat and a huge range of vegetables, so much food we couldn’t really do it justice but it was delicious! As a sweet treat I had the Infused Peach, Almond Sponge, Banana ice Cream and Fruit Coulee perfect sweet, light ending to a lovely meal. There was a great ambiance in the restaurant and we were surrounded by polite, attentive staff. To top it off as I was designated driver, I was then thrilled to find out that they also offer an alcohol free G&T which actually wasn’t too bad at all...definitely will be driving back here again very soon! Only con is they don’t do rooms!

User

Phillippa and Darren have added a modern twist to an historic Hertfordshire village pub, a warm friendly welcome, followed by swift service in a large, comfortable almost felt like a banqueting room, emphasised by the delicious meats, roasties and well thought vegetables, great Yorky puddings and gravy which, I’d guess came from a base of Demi Glace?!

Even though our large table of friends and family were suitably full, of course lunch followed by delicious home made desserts were required, everything was sumptuous, service wasn’t pushy and certainly wasn’t laboured, knowing the complexity of a commercial kitchen, cooking the majority on natural flame is a bold and brave commitment.

We are already planning another trip to this fantastic pub, thank you everyone for making our Sunday so special. #checkon

Leaving a review on behalf of my mum and her other half. I recommended this place after seeing a friend rave about it on Facebook, which was a risk considering I’ve never been myself! (good promo Craig!)

They absolutely loved it. They’ve both said the food was amazing, the location beautiful and also that the staff they got talking with were lovely. All in all, a successful birthday meal & well worth the short journey from Stevenage.

Can’t wait to try you out for myself now so I can sample the cauliflower popcorn!

User

I was taken for a lovely Mother’s Day meal here . Lovely roast meal . Cheesy parsnips are wonderful. Amazing flavours in the amuse bouche - lamb chilli wrapped round a quails egg . Well worth the drive out into the Hertfordshire countryside

User

Had a wonderful dinner in the Bushel last Night. Lovely warm welcoming atmosphere, superb food and reasonably priced. My salad was the tastiest salad I've ever had did not feel like the spring healthy option at all. Went with the recommendation of the rhubarb for pudding even though I'm keen on it, well I think it may have been converted, it was devine. I highly recommend this pub.

User

Had a lovely relaxed Afternoon here today with the family....the Sunday lunch is amazing!!! Best yorkies and gravy ever!! The staff are all so friendly and welcoming and the garden for the children to play in is fab....highly recommended and will definitely be back

User

Great food and lovely garden! We popped over to the Bushel and Strike with our two year old for lunch after we heard it was a good garden and it was the easiest place we have ever been with him, with excellent food! The garden is a really decent size and the play area is better than I have seen, especially for toddlers. We were on a table nearby and he was completely safe and entertained in there for ages. We had the dressed crab salad and half BBQ chicken which were both perfect and really generous portions. Also had some lovely white rioja and the beer (I am told) was great too. Will definitely be back, soon! Thanks.

User

Excellent food and lovely staff. The location is stunning. Highly recommend the sunday lunch platter. We'll definitely be back

EXCEPTIONAL Food

Having read much about this venue and the recent change of management/ ownership we finally got round to trying out this gem in North Herts.

We knew all about the picturesque setting and that from the layout of the garden that it would be child friendly which ticked a couple of big boxes, yet we weren't prepared to be absolutely blown away by the quality and presentation of the lunchtime fayre.

The kitchen sets its stall out rather differently to most others with an emphasis on the method of cooking using "big green egg BBQ grills" to prepare the food, displayed on the blackboards. Certainly no hindrance to delivering everyday classics as vouched for by the way the boys munched through their burgers which were served exactly to spec and taking account of their fussy details (son no.1 —> bacon, no chilli jam, son no.2 —> no cheese or jam, just bacon and ketchup)

My partner went for the spring salad with a portion of steak and whilst the sandwich options on the menu were more than tempting I went with the special of the day - a slow cooked beef Brisket in bbq sauce with a choice of breads and I would highly recommend the home-made roti flatbread which was light yet made for hugely satisfying mouthfuls which anyone who enjoys building their own sarnie would definitely appreciate.

Nicely sated but definitely pining for a little more we shared a range from the dessert menu which were once again cleverly presented and carefully assembled. Again classic staples covered ie sticky toffee pudding, and some beautiful concoctions “chocolate heaven” as opposed to ”death by chocolate”; “spring on a plate” and an equally springy “apples & peaches”. Each dish as delightful and well-balanced as the next.

We will return soon for sure to try the trio of Sunday roasts (yup you read correctly.. No messing about here: chicken, beef and pork loin on one massive plate I hear).. not to mentioned the pulled lamb hot scotch egg starter 😋 Genius.

A beautiful garden, with a lovely BBQ in garden. Half chicken, pan fried new potatoes, salad and coleslaw were delicious! As were the cold beers!

User

Lovely place good service nice food one small criticism walnut brittle on dessert was rock solid couldn’t bite it or smash it without breaking the plate so had to leave it and membrane was left on the ribs but overall good
