The Otter

About The Otter

Originally known as The Navigation, a succession of inns has occupied the site where The Otter now stands since 1800. The building was renovated in 1927 when it was taken over by the Shaw family. The family was well known in the area because they rowed anglers across the river for a penny a head. Although The Otter no longer offers this service, we are still popular with diners and drinkers throughout Derbyshire and Leicestershire for our beautiful setting and welcoming atmosphere.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

What a fabulous mother’s day we had at The Otter - our table was ready even though we arrived early . We opted for the Mothers Day 3 course menu which had loads of choice . The starters were delicious as were the mains with plenty of choice - finishing off with a super dessert . The 3 courses were brought out promptly and the waitress couldn’t have been more helpful . All in all a fabulous experience all round . Thankyou can’t wait to return !

User

We'd not been for 9 years after having a bad experience with rude staff but yesterday the place was back to how good it used to be.

Service was great and the food was excellent. Cannot fault anything, we will now return again.

User

We had a lovely Valentines meal at The Otter and just like the one we had on Christmas Day, the organisation was perfect. Not rushed, not too busy, the food was amazing and the staff great! Can highly recommend

User

Visited the Otter on Mother’s Day which also coincided with my birthday. Decided to opt for the Mother’s Day special menu because of the great dishes on offer. The meal was excellent and none of our party of four could fault it. We were looked after by Cat who could not have been more helpful. All in all a very enjoyable experience and we will definitely be making a return visit.

User

So nice to see the place to the standards of a few years ago. Great food and great service. A vast improvement on our last visit. Will certainly not avoid the place.

User

I really enjoyed my recent visit to The Otter..! The food was delicious, especially the Prawn & Lobster Cocktail starter, followed by The Hunter’s Chicken with a perfectly cooked Gammon steak...that was exceptional..! Great atmosphere & excellent staff. Many Thanks 👍🏻

User

Have had several visits now with my family, lovely cosy place & staff very friendly & attentive

User

Had a 3 course fathers day menu here today. Good value for money. Delicious food and excellent service. Will be back!

Positive criticisim I would say offer a choice of veg for kids as not many children like cabbage or parnsnip. Maybe sweetcorn peas broccoli?

User

Great location..good service and the steak was perfect!!

My second visit hopefully not the last

User

Friendly, helpful staff and excellent food. Set alongside the river Soar and with outside seating on good decking, it was the perfect setting for the evening and rounded off our day.

User

Four of us went for a meal on Good Friday. The pub was very busy and the three serving staff were rushed off their feet but coped really well as did the kitchen staff. A really good experience.

User

Fantastic place to eat - fell across it en route to Crufts from Sunderland - will def seek out again and re-visit

User

Fabulous meal tonight and exceptional service from the two ladies looking after us! Good gin, great food, fast service and lots of really nice interaction from staff, thank you very much! :)

User

10 of us went for a family Christmas/birthday meal yesterday and it was a lovely experience. Really professional waitress who was very good at her job but also genuine with it . Starters came out very quickly and we're spot on ! Mains were just as impressive and we even squeezed in a lovely pud ! We travelled from Uttoxeter but we said we'd definitely make the effort and return as we were so impressed . Would highly recommend . 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

User

We came off the motorway through Kegworth quite late at night looking for somewhere to eat. Nothing in Kegworth itself, kept driving and found The Otter. Never been before and loved it! The waitress was very welcoming and extremely helpful. Found us a great table and couldn’t do enough for us. Great choice of wine and didn’t have to wait long for the food. Will definitely go back now we know about it!

User

The food was lovely, sat out by the river on a lovely hot day, staff were really friendly and efficient, my only criticism is that the toilets were in need of attention, but apart from that is was lovely

User

The food was good, service good, staff friendly. Would have liked more for money paid x

User

Have drove past the Otter many a time and today decided to call in for some food on the way home to Barrow upon Soar. I had the Roast Pork Loin with Yorkshire Pudding and veg, my Husband had Chicken and Mushroom Pie. Both meals were lovely and tasty and very generous portions and beautifully presented. Will definitely visiting again.

User

Food was ok, only things wrong was burnt roast potatoes, no stuffing wrapped in bacon and no pigs in blankets. My grandson had turkey and sausage dinner and the sausage he couldn’t eat because is was well cooked. Dessert was great though.
