The Pug & Greyhound Description

The Greyhound is the oldest Inn in Great Glen and is a Grade II listed building. The building is largely 18th century although parts do date back to the earlier 16th century timber building. It therefore boasts that it is a 400 year old Coaching Inn.

It probably began life as an Ale House but came into prominence in the mid 1700ŌĆ▓s when it was developed to cater for regular stage coaches (introduced in 1760) and mail coaches (from 1785) that were being introduced all over England. The A6 which runs in front of The Greyhound was a very busy road with coaches coming from London linking Dunstable, Market Harborough, Leicester, Nottingham and further north. The gates to the right of the building led to outbuildings which included stables for the horses and a blacksmithŌĆÖs workshop. During the latter part of the 19th century the blacksmiths were two brothers whose surname was Allen and in the early 20th century the Allens moved the forge to High Street.

With the advent of the railways, and the consequent demise of stage and mail coaches, the fortunes of The Greyhound declined in the late 19th century. However, the Inn has remained as a popular drinking establishment for the villagers of Great Glen and beyond. The restaurant was added in the 1970s and the stables were converted to seven bedrooms during the 1990s. It is now a ŌĆ£free houseŌĆØ and an extension to the restaurant has been recently added.

The name of The Greyhound comes about because the Lords of the Manor from 1553 until about 1642 were members of the Nele (or Neale) family. John Nele had three greyhoundsŌĆÖ heads incorporated into his Coat of Arms.

The Greyhound and nearby area was subject to much flooding until the 1980s when extensive improvements were made to the River Sence drainage.

For many years the Fernie Hunt met on a small field in front of The Greyhound until 1919 when the then Lord of the Manor, Colonel E. C. Packe, before leaving with his regiment for India, gave the land to the village to be converted to the Village Green and War Memorial in honour of the men from the village who died in the 1914-18 war.

The Old Greyhound has always enjoyed a good reputation for the quality of its beers. One of its most illustrious landlords were Connie and Charlie Phillips who came to the village in the early 1940s, and although Charlie died in the late 1960s, Connie remained as ŌĆ£Landlady ExtraordinaireŌĆØ for many more years. She used to welcome all visitors ŌĆō except if they arrived on a motor-bike, or dressed in a leather jacket.

Went for lunch today with my sister in law. We are both slimming world members and saw the slimmer menu you guys were doing in Facebook. Such a good idea and what we had was fantastic. I had the chicken burger and she had the chilli. Hope this menu doesn't end !! Will be back and have told my whole sw group so I'm sure you will see more of us all!

We had dinner here last Saturday night and the food was fantastic as well as the atmosphere. The staff are very friendly with great service. My friend and I had the 'Skinny menu' as we both go to Slimming World. I had the chicken burger and she had the fish. Both dinners were very tasty and portion size was perfect. Please please keep these on the menu - we would certainly come more often if you did as would other S/W members. It's so hard to eat out, so this is just perfect. My husband had a regular pizza and son had a chilli calzone - they both loved them. We will definitely be back!

Visited yesterday lunch time and had mini fish and chips and as it was two courses for ┬Ż10 I asked if we could have just 1 course as it would have been to much . The lady who I believe must be the landlady was absolutely lovely and I think we got there a little after the lunch menu but still offered it to us . The food was so fresh . Not greasy and so tasty . First visit IŌĆÖve been here . It was such a nice atmosphere and this lady made you feel so welcome . I will defo be back with a group of friends . Would highly recommend and would give u more stars if I could . Thank you

The food was excellent the staff extremely helpful and friendly would recommend to go her to everyone

Stayed one night and ate three meals here. All very tasty. Staff friendly and very helpful. The pub has to be one of the most dog friendly pubs IŌĆÖve been to allowing our fury friends to roam around. Although there is an area for eating where no dogs are allowed to cater for non dog owners.

Rooms clean and comfortable. DonŌĆÖt like the fixed shower heads but thatŌĆÖs me. Although the cubicles could be bigger. Great tea and coffee facilities and room for the dogŌĆÖs bed.

Would definitely recommend.

Just finished a 2 night stay here and would highly recommend. The room I stayed in was lovely with everything I could need and a very comfy bed. We had drinks and dinner on the first night and the food and service were excellent. From start to finish the staff were excellent and we were made to feel very welcome. Will definitely be back

I was here as my mum is in the hospital down the road and I needed somewhere to stay close by. The staff were awesome, very accommodating and the manager (Andy?) was lovely and really informative, as was the cleaning lady who was just a gem to chat to. The room itself was exactly what I needed. Although basic, it was clean, very very comfortable and had the cutest touches such as the paintings, all natural shower gels and the most amazing Hendricks cups (my love of all things cutlery/kitchenware did a giddy dance). I was so relaxed through the evening and slept like a log. Only one thing was that I was woken fairly early by the sound of glass bottles being thrown in a bin (being a pub I'd expect that at some point) as I think the bins were nearby, so perhaps these could be moved so they're not so close to the rooms. The room could do with a bedroom bin (one small one in the bathroom) but tbh the shower I had and how relaxed I felt, it didn't really bother me. The breakfast bread and croissants were lovely AND unexpected as I didn't realise it was included in my rate. Lovely pot of tea to start my day right and some really engaging conversation from the staff. I've yet to try the dinner (I was far too tired to eat after hospital day) but my stay was simply enchanting. A quaint little gem in the middle of splendid countryside...gotta live a pub with bags of character. Thank you guys! :)

Have been here 3 times in the last month. Once for Sunday lunch, once for a Saturday evening meal and once for a mid-week lunch. Each time the food has been delicious. Hopefully, we will be going again, in the not too distant future.

Fantastic pub with great atmosphere - family and dog friendly, excellent food and service - nice comfy rooms

User

A very nice experience,lovely food

And very fast and friendly service

User

A last minute booking. Staff were very welcoming and friendly despite the pub being busy. Room was spacious and fully equipped including kettle, coffee maker and milk in the mini fridge. Quiet, Clean and tidy with huge smart tv and step in shower. Not so sure about the Bath in the bedroom but maybe some folk like that sort of thing. Breakfast menu was great although we opted for simple continental. Again, super friendly manager was on hand for breakfast, checkout. Superb

Stayed here for one night as a surprise treat from my other half as i havent been well and didnt want to travel far, firstly the staff are brilliant, the happy family buzz is infectious, the room was spotless, only slight faults were no bin in room , bedside lamp not working but most of all the tv was smaller than my computer monitor and had to put bedside table at foot of bed and put tv on it, other than that the pug is a gem and i would recomend anyone to eat and drink there you wont be disappointed ....

User

Nice place to stay. Staff were very friendly and they had a nice little selection of ales on tap. The pizza I had was 'very well cooked' but it's the only negative of my stay. I stayed in Room 5 which was very small but was clean and the bed was comfortable. On the whole, for the price, pretty good.

User

Lovely meal. food was delicious! Nice local pub but not our local yet still felt comfortable! Moroccan Lamb Terrain is definitely worth trying! Lovely place to just go chill out.

User

Nice pub, food okay a bit overpriced for quality. Staff were very chatty with each other and maybe not as attentive as they could have been. No napkins provided with desserts.

AJ really stood out and seemed to make an extra effort with customers rather than just talking with other colleagues.

I had been wanting to go here for quite a while and we did yesterday. The restaurant was empty when we arrived at 5pm and after ordering the roast dinners arrived the food was cold and the veg was so over cooked (poss under the lights for a while). The gravy was nice and hot but way way too much of it I couldn't event see the meat. None of the 4 meals included the advertised Yorkshire and after requesting them a plate of 4 were brought out they were stone cold - they definitely weren't cooked in house. We advised the waitress they were cold and she took them away and much have microwaved them as they were only luke warm and by this time soft!!! We have the 2 courses options so had desert which was passable. All in all not the best dining experience and my roast dinner is better than what was served i should have stayed at home and celebrated the family birthday.

The first time I went to the pug and greyhound was back in Feb, dinner with friends - that evening the service was great and the food was excellent. So decided to take my sister there for lunch today, and I couldnŌĆÖt believe the turnaround, the food was really poor quality, some of it was burnt, when I asked for it to go back, one of the staff got rather argumentative and defensive and said that the hand cooked chips are meant to be like that - burnt, charred and black (not how I would ever make, serve or eat them). When I questioned if they had different chefs, again he got defensive and was rather aggressive which I have found really off putting.
