Great for bees and for medicines too - Calendula is especially easy to grow and makes a wonderful healing salve.

Hello, and thanks for visiting my page.
You might already have some experience with herbal medicine, or it might be completely new to you, and you just might be wondering what it’s all about. Have a look at the “About…” section for a brief description and a few examples of health problems that herbal medicine can help you with.
I hope to share my love of plants with you here, and give you an insight into how I work as a herbalist. The approach I take to illness and healing m...ay be quite different to what you are used to. Herbal healing is a gentle process, and herbal medicines have been shown to be effective through the clinical experience of many herbalists, as well as research that has been carried out into a number of herbs.
I am available for herbal consultations in Loughborough, and am also happy to give talks to local groups. Please get in touch if you would like any details.

"But it is Culpeper's achievements in health care that made him famous. By practicing (often illegally) as a herbalist and publishing the first English-language texts explaining how to treat common ailments, he helped to break the monopoly of a medical establishment that had abandoned the poor and needy. His book The English Physician became the most successful non-religious English book of all time, remaining in print continuously for more than 350 years."

Stinging nettles...
Or not! In fact, these nettle-like leaves belong to the white dead-nettle instead. You can never be too careful when harvesting herbs. Always double check that you are picking the right plant! (I know, I've said it before!)

Dried elderflowers, ready to store and use in infusions over the year.
Elder is a wonderful plant, with many medicinal uses. We can harvest the leaves in spring before the flowers appear, to use in ointments for bruising.
Then the flowers can be harvested to use in infusions at the onset of colds and fevers.
... Finally, in mid-late summer, the berries are ready to be turned into deep red, delicious medicine for colds, flu and other respiratory infections.

Good summary from the perspective of a herbalist...

Nettles have been starting to come into flower for a few weeks now. When buds start appearing, that's the time to stop picking the new leaves. Later in the summer, the seeds will be ripe and ready to pick and dry for medicine. #HerbalMedicine #Nettles

Nettles starting to come up alongside one of the roads into Loughborough. Although I wouldn't harvest from right next to a main road, it's good to see them.

Having tried an onion poultice myself, I can confirm that it does work, and despite the strong smell, is a pretty comforting remedy. Easy to prepare, using ingredients that you might already have at home.

Home grown marshmallow leaves, ready to infuse in oil for an ointment workshop at the weekend.
In the past, I have used a bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water to infuse oils, which is great if you are making a small quantity. Recently I have started using a small slow cooker, which allows me to make larger quantities more easily.

We don't get many butterflies in our garden. This one took a fancy to The Modern Herbal Dispensatory by Thomas Easley and Steven Horne. Shame we can't both read it at the same time!
