Good to see Tommy and Cassie this morning. They loved our new ChargeBox and updated self-service machines πŸ™‚πŸ‘ Some good ideas for future improvements to our services as well. We can't wait for the new academic year ! πŸ˜ƒ

We now have charging facilities in the Library! πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘You can charge your phone with the ChargeBox on the ground floor, next to the vending machines. Just plug your phone into an empty locker, shut the door and remove the key, then collect it when you're done. It's free, secure and super easy, but you can ask our friendly staff for help if you need it. No need to worry about being out of charge! ⚑️

Next in our wellbeing spotlight is 'Anxiety @ University' by Dr Dominique Thompson (378.198THO). This book explains in clear, easy to understand language what anxiety is, where is comes from and why it exists. It explores tools that can help you handle anxiety and steps you can take if you feel you need professional help.
Anxiety is the second most common mental health condition in the world, with 275 million people affected (Our World in Data, 2018) This includes phobias, ob...sessional problems, health anxiety and body dysmorphic disorder. You can also develop anxiety in response to a specific situation, such as bereavement, sexual or physical assault, and life-threatening incidents. When symptoms persist for longer than 4-6 weeks it's possible to develop PTSD and it's best to seek help.
"Don't avoid a visit to the GP because they will mention medication" Doctors will inform you of ALL your treatment options and discuss these with you to help you make your own informed decision. Other options might include talking therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) or applied relaxation. Try not to listen to narrow-minded myths and make your own decisions about what treatment you think will work for you.
If you recognise symptoms of anxiety in yourself you may feel like you can sort things out independently. This books has useful tools to help you do that. Helpful things you can do to improve anxiety include breathing techniques, helpful distraction, exercise, and journalling. Unhelpful things that people commonly go to include excessive alcohol consumption, or engaging in 'safe' behaviours. If you feel that after a month your symptoms aren't any better then this book provides guidance about how to obtain professional help.
In preparation for this it's a good idea to monitor your anxiety and see if you can spot patterns. What triggers your anxiety? Are they past or future scenarios? Are they related to people, places, situations, times of the day?
Although some anxiety is good for us, we need to be in control of it. There's no need to suffer through. Pick up this book at shelf-mark 378.198THO and learn how you can help yourself. Remember to keep the University informed of your circumstances so they can limit the impact it has on your Academic Studies πŸ™‚πŸ‘

First in our wellbeing book spotlight is 'Depression @ University' by Dr Dominique Thompson (378.19713THO) This book will give you all the tools you need to understand the sources of depression and take steps to reclaim your life, including easy-to-follow examples and exercises.
This short book is split into chapters, with each chapter explaining various elements of depression. Including simple explanations of what depression is, types of depression, what to do if you think y...ou have depression, talking therapies and medication.
The chapter that you might be interested in reading first is: How Do I Know if I Have Depression and I'm Not Just Having a 'Bad Few Days' ? This might help you decide if you need to seek help.
The book then takes you through the steps of how to get help, including making your University aware of your circumstance. It suggests what treatment might help for different types of depression, such as talking therapies for mild depression and medication for moderate or severe.
In preparation for receiving treatment the book asks you to think about some things, such as what might be causing your feelings. There are lots of factors that can contribute to depression such as social media, loneliness, financial worries and work stress, among others.
It has a whole chapter dedicated to helpful things you can do to try to alleviate your depression. It also has 'behaviour boosters' which are exercises in planning activities and evaluating your enjoyment and setting targets to help you achieve your goals * Please don't write directly on these book pages. Scan them in or copy the headings into your favourite notebook
If this sounds interesting to you then make sure you borrow a copy (found at shelf-mark 378.19713THO) πŸ™‚πŸ‘
