Burton and Uttoxeter Labour Youth Group. The YSC has been a lifeline to many young people in the area. Discounted bus journeys allowed young people, who are usually paid much less than a living wage, to travel to and from work and part time jobs, as well as to school, sixth form and college.
It is very saddening to see a great scheme being axed, and will inherently impact young people from lower-income families the most.

Burton and Uttoxeter Labour has hit out at the constituency’s Conservative MP Andrew Griffiths over his unhelpful interventions in the Kerry Foods closure. Labour can reveal that the disgraced MP has not contacted the company, or the union Unite, to ask how he can assist in supporting the staff. ... Paul Walker, Chairman of Burton and Uttoxeter Labour Party, said: “Shamefully we are seeing the MP for Burton continuing to help himself rather than the 900 workers affected by the Kerry Foods closure. “It is quite disappointing to learn that he has not had the decency to contact either Kerry Foods or Unite the Union to ask how he can assist the workforce. If he had, he would have learned that four jobs fairs have been organised internally, the final one coming just 24 hours before his jobs fair which he is clearly using as a cheap attempt at self-promotion. “It is also shameful to see him speaking about a recruitment tie-up between Kerry Foods and Molson Coors, which he claims he secured despite knowing full well that this was secured by the union, Unite. “His decision to publicly blame Kerry Foods management for ‘failing to diversify’ is extremely unhelpful when efforts to secure new contracts remain ongoing. Anyone with any knowledge of the industry knows that companies like Tesco will not allow competitors to share a factory that makes its products. “Only Andrew Griffiths could ask questions in Parliament about a factory closure that he does not understand. He should really stop using this serious situation for so many workers and their families as an attempt to promote himself and get around the table with those that really understand what is going on at the sharp end.”

Burton and Uttoxeter Labour Party INVESTMENT NEEDED TO SECURE QUALITY JOBS FOR BURTON AND UTTOXETER SAYS LABOUR
... In the wake of the closure of the Kerry Foods factory, with the loss of 900 jobs, Burton and Uttoxeter Labour have called for investment in industry to secure a future for the local and regional economy.
Paul Walker, Chairman of Burton and Uttoxeter Labour Party, said: “The Kerry Foods closure is a devastating blow to our economy. It will further add to a longstanding race to the bottom in this constituency where zero hour contracts and poverty pay are now the norms.
“Losing skilled work of the nature of jobs at Kerry Foods is a loss to the whole town and our thoughts and solidarity go out to the workers affected. We hope that Unite and the management can get the best possible redundancy settlements.
“But we need greater investment in industry to create jobs and improve productivity. But this can’t happen when we have a dysfunctional government intent on driving down workers’ terms and conditions and attacking collective bargaining. We need local and regional investment banks to create incentives to open up job opportunities. This can only happen if there is a General Election and a Labour Government is returned.”
