Posted @withrepost • @mentalhealthfoundation 💚 #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek starts today! . . 📊 We commissioned an online survey of 4,505 UK adults aged 18 and over to mark the launch of Mental Health Awareness Week 2019, for the theme ‘Body image - how we think and feel about our bodies’ #BeBodyKind .... . ❕We found that ... . 🔸 Just over one in eight UK adults (13 per cent) have experienced suicidal thoughts or feelings because of concerns about their body image. . 🔹 Just over one third of UK adults have felt anxious (34 per cent), or depressed (35 per cent) because of concerns about their body image. . 🔸Almost one in five UK adults (19 per cent) have felt “disgusted” because of their body image and one in five (20 per cent) said they had felt “shame” because of their body image in the last year. . 🔹 One in ten women (10 per cent) saying they have self-harmed or “deliberately hurt themselves” because of their body image. . 🔸 A quarter of men (25 per cent) said they have felt depressed because of concerns about their body image. . 🔹One in five people (20 per cent) aged 55 and above have said they have felt anxious because of their body image. . 🔸 Just over one in five (22 per cent) of all UK adults and almost half (46 per cent) of 18-24 year olds said images on social media had caused them to worry about their body image. . . 💻View full report at mentalhealth.org.uk/publications . . . . . . 💚Samaritans: If you need someone to talk to then Samaritans are available on 116 123 (UK) for free, 24/7. Mental health is just as important as physical health. How do you think and see your body? Body image issues can affect all of us at any age. We get taught from a young age to look after ourselves physically but we don’t get taught how to look after our mind, that doesn’t make sense to me. Mental Health and Exercise two of the things I’m passionate about.
1 in 4 adults in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year.
9 out of 10 people with mental health problems reporr that they experience stigma.
... 26% of young people have said that the stigma attached to their mental illness has made them want to give up on life.
These stats are huge and powerful. The pressure and strains in today’s society isn’t surprising that 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem. Those people who do experience this, do they or have they found strategies to help them cope with what they are dealing with?? Do they have support? Are they talking about how they are feeling??
With so much focus and talk about Mental Health why is there still a stigma attached? It’s 2019!
Why are our young people struggling so much they want to take their own lives??
These are the conversations that we should be having. We should be asking the people we care about if they are ok and really mean it and listen to their response.
If you’re struggling with your own mental health, what helps you? Walking, exercise, talking, watching telly, reading a book?
