YHA is 88 years old today!

Formed on this day in 1930 to encourage young people to get out of the cities and into the country side to exercise, socialise, increase their knowledge and broaden their horizons, YHA still exists today and is still encouraging all, and especially young people of limited means to do this and more.

YHA has survived down turns caused by war and recession, remained during crisis caused by the foot and mouth epidemic and evolved to compete in the current market and meeting the needs of modern day travellers.

To top this off, YHA is not for profit and invests all its money back into its network, people and charitable Breaks programme.

With a network of over 140 diverse locations with friendly and knowledgeable staff at reasonable pricing, it has been a pleasure to stay with YHA and would encourage anyone else to consider hosteling when travelling.

Keep up the good work YHA!

Three children and myself have just had our first taste of youth hostelling and wow I wished I had discovered it sooner. Our first trip was a one night stay at yha Borth. We had a wonderful friendly welcome at reception , the room was everything we needed with the most amazing views over the sea. As it was our first time we went for the easy option of in house breakfast. Not only was it delicious it was served by the cheeriest chef I have ever met. Our hosts really worked hard to create a pleasant ambience which they achieved with ease.

My 9 yr old's comment as the door closed when we departed..."can we go back there soon mum?" That says it all. And we will be back soon. Thanks

Thank you to Chloe and Mark for an amazing stay at Black Sail Hut this weekend. The location was always going to be amazing but you guys made it with your friendly welcome and yummy food!

User

Just booked a night for £9 in a great Hostel love YHA book with them direct for the best deals.

User

I’ve stayed in a few YHA hostels and I love them! They are clean comfortable and friendly, and you get to meet people that you probably wouldn’t meet if you stayed anywhere else.

User

I was in london for few days and i stayed in this hostel.I am very satisfied about everything and i will suggest to book for this company whoever wan to visit london.

User

I have recently stayed at York, Scarborough, Whitby and Helmsley hostels and I found the accommodation to be what I expected in all venues and to a comparable standard at each. The staff are very helpful, especially at Scarborough YHA who helped me try and fix my unrepairable bike and even tool me to Halfords on a Sunday morning in an effort to assist. I am now a member and will be using YHA again and again in the near future.

Great venues. Great value and great staff.

User

I have now stayed in 4 different hostels and each stay has been spot on, and brilliant value!

User

I am a lifelong hosteller. From walking holidays in my teens with groups of friends, to thirteen consecutive years in a family room at YHA Derwentwater (sadly no longer a YHA hostel :-( ) and now a regular user for everything from coast path walking to overnights in cities for work, YHA had never let me down. Comfortable, welcoming and safe.

Brilliant stay with my kids at YH Stratford-upon-Avon. So excited to use your properties in future!

We've stayed at Treyarnon Bay, Penzance, Cheddar, Eden Project, Arnside, Streatley-on-Thames and Conwy in the last 3 years, and are just about to book our now annual pre-Christmas YHA chill-out break.

We've loved all our stays (although Eden was a little bit airless in the pod), and the variety of building types. atmospheres and people that we've met doing the same thing. With a nut-anaphylactic child, the self-catering is exactly what we need, and gives us the flexibility we'd get from camping, but at times of year when we might not do that with young children!

So why not four stars? - well, on the self-catering note, it is quite clear that in most hostels they'd rather you ate in the restaurant - some of the kitchens really need a deep clean (Streatley!) and/or refit, and can be miles away from the other public spaces (Penzance). And recently we've seen prices go up in some hostels - not even creeping, but shooting up and making us wince - why not spread the costs a bit more, rather than having super-cheap rooms in one hostel and super-expensive for the same number of beds in another (we are a family of 4) ??

On the whole we are now avid-YHA fans, but would like to see prices stay reasonable, and more equally distributed - sometimes it would be tempting to stay in an AirBnb for less money - but the reason we like YHA is so that we meet people in the lounge/kitchen and get chatting, which you don't get with self-catered cottages etc.

User

I'm a long standing but now disillusioned member. I wanted to book a family room during a school hols only to find the price QUADRUPLES. Disgusting uplift in price. Also sad all the local beers and foods have disappeared and replaced with bland and boring brews and city grub. YHA will find the customer base shrinks as families with those future customers cant afford to stay. Lost your way YHA

User

Whatever you do do not be fooled by the promotional offers. I visited the YHA website and was offered a 25% off promo code. I made a booking using it but then needed to change may plans. What wasn't made clear when i used the code was that it completely changed the standard T&Cs and that I couldn't get a refund (which is standard when making a booking without a promo code). I contacted customer services but they refused to give me any of my money back even though I cancelled within 24hrs and a month before the arrival date. Shocking misselling and not what you expect from a charity.

User

This was booked for me as a birthday surprise and I was looking forward to it the whole 6 hour drive

On arrival I had to use the toilet and on the way out fell down a step outside onto a barrier blocking a drop that was not secured and landed quite badly injuring my foot and knee

I couldn't get anyone's attention as I was screened from view I had to drag myself into reception to ask for first aid where I was met by a receptionist who then proceeded to tell me he had studied forensics and I should go and manipulate my foot the opposite way I fell on it, I again asked for a first aider to assist me and was brought a dirty tea towel from the bar filled with ice

When I asked for an accident form they didn't have any and despite writing down my info and an account of my accident being recorded with a request for a callback from management I still haven't heard anything

We then realised that with only one foot in use I couldn't make it across the rough stone car park to my pod and there was no offer of help from staff

Once some kind visitors who Saw my plight virtually carried me to my pod I opened the door to be greeted by an extremely dirty pod with sweets on floor

What with this and me having no access to drinking water unless I crawled across the car park and back in the dark I left to seek medical attention and a clean hotel

The YHA have not contacted me and I was unable to continue my holiday returning home the next morning holiday ruined

User

Reading these reviews, its even more galling that the YHA have just cancelled our leader accommodation for a D of E expedition our young people have planned for October! Apparently it's in their terms and conditions that they can do this: they got a better offer. Always read the small print!

I’d booked to stay in Coniston the first weekend in March when the first of the bad snow came.

Coming from Sheffield the only routes there are woodhead pass, snake pass or the m62, all of which were shut. Even with the 4x4 I was driving there in, I had no possible way of getting there.

After emailing multiple times it became very clear I wasn’t getting anything back. I never once asked for a full refund but they wouldn’t let me change the dates/give partial refund/credit/discount on future stays.

The AA/met office/emergency services were all warning not to travel unless absolutely necessary, so short of getting there on my magic carpet I’m not sure how I was expected to get there.

Told twice to claim through my travel insurance, because everyone takes out travel insurance for two days in a place three hours drive away from home.

I do understand it’s not yha’s fault but there was absolutely no regard for customer satisfaction or for the circumstances, this type of weather is not a usual occurrence. After taking £180 off me for a weekend away that I didn’t have, it wouldn’t have hurt to give a 10/20% discount on a future visit, but no, nothing. For a charity, I find this a rather uncharitable move, to take money from the people who are staying in these hostels to support said charity.

I’ve stayed in enough of these hostels to know the staff working in them are fantastic, but the customer care service if something goes wrong is terrible. Very much doubt I’ll stay in one again and my membership certainly won’t be renewed.

User

I booked for seven people to stay this Saturday, at the Edale Peak District Hostel.

Due to the weather conditions the first aid course that we were doing, has been cancelled, we are part of a Search and Rescue team based in Birmingham.

I have spoken to the Youth Hostel and the main customer service dept, that where not willing to swap our dates or refund us, because we booked when there was special offer on.

I think this is terrible, and would think twice about any further bookings, all we wanted was a different date.

Disgusted

User

Disappointed that a transfer couldn’t be given with adverse weather conditions and when email the center you get a automatic response. Will not be using again

User

Booked a stay at a youth hostel in the Peak District and had a confirmation, then several weeks later received an email saying they were cancelling one night of my stay, without any explanation. The manager offered to find me an alternative, but as my daughters were looking forward to their holiday, I thought it easier to book something else myself. I was then told it might take 28 days to refund my money. Contacted the customer service centre who basically said that they have an obligation to make their hostels as profitable as possible and individual bookings weren't always profitable. I thought they might also have an obligation to their paying guests.
