About Ancient Mariner Inn

When it comes to good pub food and real ales, there’s plenty to choose from at The Mariner.

Ancient Mariner Inn Description

Traditional Inn on the North Norfolk Coast
Picture yourself in a village pub with one of the most spectacular views of the sea and beach in Norfolk, looking out across the Wash. Whether it’s a cool drink watching a summer sunset or enjoying a hearty meal for winter warmth, you will find it here at the Mariner.

The pub is located in Old Hunstanton which is the only village on the east coast to face west. Its buildings date back to the 1600s. They were originally the barns and stable block for the adjacent house - now a delightful four star hotel. There are low beams, snug seating and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. Atmospheric, the pub has a fine collection of local nautical prints and regalia. You’ll also find a warm Norfolk welcome, excellent food and drink.

Outside there is a well designed terrace and decking with lawns that lead down to sand dunes and the sea beyond. Sit out on a fine summer’s evening and watch the sun go down over the Wash - it's an idyllic setting for a drink and a meal.

Went for lunch today with my husband Mel. Sister in law Linda. We all had roast beef. The food was lovely. All the staff very friendly. It was lovely sitting out in the sunshine; and views of the sea. We will be back.

Welcoming high quality food/ingredients and staff only too happy to find out some Information for me (on low residue due to crohns disease so they checked their burgers for me) I have never rated pub food above a 3 until now!

Do check out the Ancient Mariner you won't be disappointed at all. I'm.also putting a review on a critique internet site where I have 8,000 followers

Visited here today on recommendation from a friend, the pub is dog friendly always a massive plus for us. The pub was busy but we managed to find a table outside, we ordered our drinks and food at the bar, both bar staff were friendly and polite. We both ordered the fish n chips which arrived within 10-15mins of ordering (fantastic), portion size was good and value for money. We shall be returning for a repeat visit later this summer.

Tip for parking, even though the pub has its own car park (for patrons only) there is a small car park next to it for beach parking which is cheaper than the council car parks & closer to the RLNI centre.

Took Mum yesterday, she has limited mobility but it all went so well. We enjoyed crab salad, nicely buttered potatoes and house salad. Followed by banana splits, she loved it and so did my hubby and I. Food was excellent, service was quick and they were so attentive. Thank you The Ancient Mariner. We will return because it was so easy to bring Mum, a lovely place to be with such gorgeous views and yummy food xx

Just had the best evening at The Ancient Mariner with a party of 20 to celebrate my son’s 20th birthday . Food was superb , fantastic friendly service who could not have done anymore to accommodate our group of disabled young people. Peter, Benny and all the staff thank you so much

User

Great staff and great food, this is my local pub and its nice to have somewhere where you just have to walk in the door and the bar staff are already pulling your pint for you!

User

Excellent service and our dogs were welcome, we will certainly visit again.

User

Blimey.. has this place changed. Nice to be back though.

We've been here on numerous occasions and it's always been okay. It's a treat meal that my husband's grandmother pays for when we come to visit. Tonight I found the staff really quite rude. My husband's grandmother ordered the belly pork, which had no crispness to it all and was basically just a lump of fat that wasn't really edible (a bit like having fat around the edge of a steak). We told the waitress who told us no one else had complained. I don't see why that matters?! When we mentioned it again at the desk when we went to pay, two members of staff looked at us gone out as though they didn't even know it was on the menu. We did get an apology in the end but no one seemed bothered. Luckily we had a voucher, but if we'd been expected to pay full price we would have wanted some kind of discount as half the meal couldn't be eaten. We didn't mention at the time but the venison burgers were dry and overcooked as well. For the full price, the meals aren't worth the money and the staff don't seem to give a crap about customer service either.

The one male member of staff at the till was very helpful and attentive, the other one was tooo busy talking to his mates at the table near the till. Food was lovely and hot. Found the female member not very helpful at all, when I tried to order pudding, she just ignored me. Will go back but just for interest sake! The pudding was supposed to be Eaton Mess but was a cheese cake, so disappointing!

User

Good Food,Service a little slow but great Sunsets from Dining Room & even better with a 50% voucher off food will be back.

User

Always love this pub greats views over the sea, lovely grassed area for the kids to play.

Mixed food review, 4 of us ate, lamb shank and pork chops were great, big thumbs up.

But 2 of us had roast beef, one mingy thin slice of beef, tepid roast potatos (certainly not crispy or fluffy) , boiled parsnips ( is this a Norfolk thing? We like ours roasted) no cauliflower cheese...shock horror....To be fair the other veg were ok broccoli and carrots. But a small pot of gravy £3,00 what the heck!!!

Next time I’ll have the lamb shank : )

User

Very disappointed Have been there several times and it has been great Went for a meal on the last night of our holiday last week I only had a tuna mayonnaise sandwich that was OK My partner had chicken with croutons and crispy bacon ,new potatoes and salad What salad !!!! A very large portion of iceberg lettuce and no other salad item at all A few pieces of cold sliced chicken breast three or four croutons and a drizzling of caesar dressing and a very small amount of crispy bacon It is a beautiful building with a gorgeous view but was very disappointed with the food this time My partner complained but was not offered a refund or even a free drink Need to get there act together It has gone downhill

User

It was going well, nice pub, pleasant staff, good beer, until the pub was summarily closed ahead of closing time without last orders being called and without the only paying customer remaining (me) being told it was closing or asked if he'd like another drink before it did. Not the best way to run a business.

User

Have visited this place on numerous occasions. On one visit they had ran out of food and other occasions dirty toilets.. Never eaten here but had drinks and they were ok.

User

Terrible customer service at the Mariners tonight, apparently having two identically named dishes on the menu but on different pages, one vegetarian, one not, is perfectly OK and when they bring you a non veggie one it is our fault for not specifically requesting the veggie option - I'm vegetarian, I don't read the meat section to check for identically named dishes because I'm vegetarian. Ended up having a heated discussion which the staff who still could not see why this was an issue and argued the the toss at length before we were grudgingly refunded the money for the food we couldn't eat. Mistakes happen but the attitude and customer service shown were terrible. We have had great meals in the past but tonight has spoilt it. Completely ruined our anniversary - we will not be back.

User

Has a lovely long bar, with seats at it, however you have to join a queue to get a drink? Has anyone ever heard of anything so ridiculous?

User

Food is extremely overpriced for what you get, over £12 for scampi and chips and even more for a steak pie, and it all was out of a bag/box. never again

User

Disappointing, basic pub food at best. When we arrived all the staff were all sat at the bar eating (which isn't an issue but doesn't look very professional) and the member of staff who served us, proceeded to do so with a mouthful! Wouldn't return or recommend.
